Volt light stays on- no charge
« on: September 30 2026, 02:14:55 PM »
So after waiting 7 weeks for an actuator bracket to be welded up for my new turbo with S cover from Precision (thats another story)  I warmed up the car all good shut it off & few mins later start it & the Red Volt light stays on? Battery slowly losing charge so I'm charging it now. I unplugged the Brown wire to Alt & the light goes out but still no charge? I think I have a Dash Bulb plug or even maybe a long shot Caspers Field Fix Plug but I'd like to know the real issue so do I pop the Dash Cover first? The bulb stays lit so it works Thanks

Use a old  ice-pick style  test light. Start the car, clip the alligator clip to pos + battery and punch/prick the test light into the brown wire at the alt plug.  That will bypass all the wiring going to the dashboard. If it don't charge then alt may be bad and if charges check the wires going to dash. Also make sure the red hot terminal has voltage the goes to the starter. It's been awhile but I think there's a fusible link near the starter.

Ed thanks fpr the info. I have the dash 90% out & will get it done tomorrow. Ordered a Caspers Field Fix for now but want to look at the board. I'll try your ideas & there are 3 fusible links that I replaced 20+ years ago. lets see how it goes?

So I bypassed the wires with direct POS to Brown Plug & no change. Shit!
Hard to believe the Alt just died? I rebuilt it 50k miles back..
Just thinking?? but maybe buy a rebuild kit if I can find one at reasonable price.
Fusible links are a PITA to trace Don't remember where they go? Maybe on Steve's site.
Lets see how the afternoon goes. Cheers!

I assume you used your test light to go from the POS battery to the alt brown wire?  You need the bulb to light in the test light to take the place of the dash board  charging light. Take the alt off and have it tested at one of your large auto store like big moose auto center :D

Big Moose! lol Yes I have 2 hot boxes from trunk mount on welders cable! The light lit up so if it died that will sure be a surprise. It was just at idle for 2 mins maybe 10x over the few weeks then poof! cars been down since July 1st but got lots of work done to it. The dash is out but the instructions leave out some pretty important tips to know. Alt only been back on the car for a month! back out it comes & I'll let you know. Thanks Ed
