Dieing In High Gear-Opinions Wanted
« on: July 15 2016, 11:09:43 PM »
My car ran great tonite...excep t in high gear. It's acting like the engine is cutting out. Pulls like a freight train in 1st and 2nd...but falls on its face in high gear. SM numbers are normal...and the PL file looks fine. Fuel pressure is rising with boost...very slight KR...less than 1 count in high gear...prolly from sputtering. Partial throttle in high gear is fine...but falls on its face at WOT...in high gear. I'm thinking the ignition is breaking down under full load in high gear. I have a couple spare coil packs and ignition modules. Once again...open to suggestions.

Larry...good question. Laptop is in the car. I'll post it in the morning. I remember the SM at idle was in the 13's. I think it's normally 15.2 at WOT with the Caspers volt booster...but let me check in the morning.

as it's the easiest thing I can think of, swap the module/coil :)

If that is a no go...then measure the crank thrust

Steve...off the top of your head...do you know the ohm value for the coils. I'll check the ones on the car...and the spares I have.

Bear with me guys...cuz I can barely put batteries in a flashlite. I put the ohm meter on 20K...and this is what I got from the coil pack from last nite that's on the car.

11.58
11.53
11.61

I have 2 spare coil packs.

1st

12.53
12.58
12.58

2nd

11.53
11.52
11.53

I have 2 spare ignition modules...one with a part number...and one without. I'll post pics...maybe you guys can figure out what brand they are...and if they'll work with an external tach.

coils look okay.  Does not say anything about the modules.

Tach should work fine with the modules...but they may, or may not, be anygood

I swapped in one of the extra modules I have. We'll try it again on the 29th.

pretty sure that delco one is for a regular 3.8-not a turbo

Steve...the one I removed from the car looks like a Delco unit...and we have a different part number...so you're likely right.

24503624

The million dollar question. What's the difference...a nd will the one I installed work with our engines? If not...then I'll swap in the other spare I have.

The car fired right up with the one I installed.
