Motor question

Okay probably sound stupid but here it is. I have had a lifter tick in my car forever and my OCD cant leave it alone. My question is this. I have it narrowed down to the pass side. if I remove the valve cover and roll motor until intake is wide open, and feel if there is any play in pushrods, then do same until exhaust is wide open and check push rods again, will I be able to notice a difference in pushrod movement, if any, to figure out which one it is?

Not at wide open. Probably not when closed, but maybe

I ran a set of CC lifters in my last engine. Sounded like a dozen hammers under the hood. Didn't set the knock sensor off...and the engine ran nails...so I paid no attention to it.

Mine makes more noise than I like but that's the way it's been for years. In the old days when I would do a Chev OH, I would spin the pushrod while I was adjusting, not just work the rocker. Maybe your doing that already, just a thought.

problem is there is no adjusting. I was thinking if I found the culprit I would get a pushrod made that would be a bit longer, eliminating the noise

hydraulic lifters or not very sensitive to push rod length so I doubt that will help in this case. You could try taking the lifter apart and cleaning it out...or you could buy one quality lifter, install it, along with an oil change to some Joe Gibbs break in oil and rebreak the cam in and see if the noise goes away.
Which valve is it?
