The Suspension Mega-Thread!
« on: September 04 2006, 08:51:16 PM »
Being inspired the time I out-apexed Racer X's BMW in Vegas (hush Greg, lemme enjoy that moment :smt071 ), I've been looking at replacing all my coils and shocks with something more suited for turning at obscene rates of speed.

Now, my idea is 600# front springs, 250# rears, stock front sway bar and a 1 inch rear bar.

Here: http://jeffd.50megs.com/Moog_Spring_Page.htm I found the Moog 5658 which I like, the S-10 spring. 579# spring rate. Where can I find 250# rear springs?

I also remember talking about panhard bars and such too, so let's bring that up. Would it help? And what about tubular rear arms and the braces for them? Do the lowers flex more than the uppers or are they just total sh!t regardless when turning? And are the braces really worth it?

I also want to do my whole front end too, as my bushings are disinegrating. So I was looking at this kit: http://www.p-s-t.com/gm/gmfekpgs.html

I'll eventually get to the brakes, which will be an LS1 brake swap and maybe even a 3:08 rear gear. Who knows?

Anyway, lemme get opinions on all this nonsense. I intend on doing this a piece at a time.

If you have an OEM p/n on the S-10 springs, I may have a very low milage
set for you.

I know that this is not the set-up for everybody, but it works for me so far:
Kirban's front & rear stock height springs.
Kirban's factory rubber 6 pc body bushing kit, lowers:#'s 3, 4, & upper: GNX
Kirban's rear seat braces & kirban's lower frame brace to tie the frame rails together, the angular one's too, but I doubt that they really help handling as much as they do squeaks & rattles.
Bilsteins on all 4 corners
Rear: upper: BMR tubular control arms, spherical bearings at the frame side & factory rubber rubber bushings at the back side. Not exactly free though
Rear: lower: Global West tubular control arms, spherical bearings at the frame side & Del-A-Lum bushings at the rear.
FTS&S 1 3/8" rear sway bar
Front sway bar: factory as that it is 1 1/4", I believe, and at least half or all of the companies selling aftermarket front sway bars won't advertise the size as most are smaller in dia than the factory one is. Global west is 1 1/8" front. I had to send mine back. I only assumed that it would be bigger.
Front upper control arms: Fully adjustable SC&C (Savitske) pro-lites & the tall balljoints, This is the Stage II set-up, next modification going on my suspension.
16" rims & tires. If you want to go high dollar, if you go 17" rims & tires, you can go the SC&C killer AFX set-up, with the ATS spindles with the corvette C5 hubs & Baer/wildwood/brakes of your choice. I just bought some very nice 16X8 GTA rims & Michelin Sport pilot rims & tires, so i have to pass on the AFX set-up. No 17" rims that I like, & no money even if I did.
I am sure that Doc 1 of 7 will chastise me for not going on coliovers, but I am too damn broke now, and I have yet begun on this thing. If somebody made some 17" GNX replica rims, I would be in deep financial straits.
