General Buick Tech / Re: Boost drop
« on: May 27 2011, 10:15:16 AM »
Thanks Steve,

I'll back off the fuel and try it, when it was at the baseline setting  of 128 I was getting a bit of knock so jumped it up to 140 and got no knock but was at 830 so I dropped it to 135 and still no knock and lowered to 800, played it safe and thought that was a good place to be?? Scared of the knock :confused;

On the shifts I was looking at the stock tack ( I know, not the best gauge :redfaced; ) I'll make a run watching the SM and see exactly where it shifts now that I know 5200 is my mark.

Was out goofing around yesterday and have a question. Car is running good but with a WOT run from a light it produces 16lbs. of boost through 1st and second but drops to 13-14ish in 3rd?? NO knock and 800 is my lowest reading at 75mph. If I increase boost I start to get a little knock in 1st. Have my TT chip set at 135 for WOT fuel in all gears, timing is base chip setting.

Also it shifts at about 5500, is that a bit to high? If so is there any way to correct it without a trip to the tranny shop. Its a new rebuild on the tranny maybe 2500 miles ago. Other than the question about the shift point it works fine.

Thanks guys!!

General Buick Tech / Re: Steering wheel

Thanks guys, I looked into all options, the "e-bay" lady seems to be the only chance of getting the wheel modified to a larger grip. She needed to discuss with her husband as at this point I am the first to request it so it will be a new thing for them. I thought maybe others would be interested in it on the forums??? If they are willing and it works out I'll post pic's and feedback.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys!!!

My wheel is pretty rough, I did do a repair I found where you can fix it then paint it but it dosent hold up. I also dont like the "skinny" wheel. Is there anyplace that a guy can get the wheel recovered, with some added thickness, that will still look factory. I dont want just a grey leather wheel cover, it came with one of those hiding the issues but I dont like the look of a cover.

Thanks for any direction

General Buick Tech / first trip out this year....wanders
« on: May 04 2011, 10:19:48 AM »
Finally got it out this morning. Last year I put wider tires on and it seems to wander all over the uneven pavement. With the stock tires it wasnt to bad, the wider one's really amplified the problem. Is it very costly to tighten up the front end? What would be involved? The car only has 55000 miles on it but maybe tie-rod ends are worn?? Or maybe its something else? I dont know much about this??

Thanks alot!

Okay, now I will show my ignorance. Is hydroboost changing it to a system like out of an S-10?? I thought I read about that before. I'll have to start doing some searching on the issue and get educated. I take my wife and son alot in this car and I dont need any braking drama.

Thanks guys!!

I know alot switch to conventional brakes. I still have the original equipment but reading about failures makes me nervous. Getting car ready for another summer and the powermaster seems to make more noise than it did last year, probably just me but should this thing be making noise at all?? When you step on the pedal it makes noise for a couple seconds.

Thanks for any feedback

you guys have me all fired up to get this installed!

Stupid question time, seeing that I'm not made of money, I know the flowmaster exhaust is less than desirable for these cars. I got the car with a brand new exhaust installed right before I got it. I was going to switch out to the Pypes system but if I'm spending 500-600 on an alchy system, will the difference in exhaust be that much. The exhaust would be my next thing after the alchy but I've read so much bad stuff about the flowmaster that I'm askin, wait till I can do both? or alky, then get the pypes?

Here in Wisconsin you can usually only get 91 octane and it almost always has 10% ethenol it it. Is that a factor, the ethenol blend I mean??

I was having some boost control issues before ( corrected now) and when it would get above 20LB it would knock BADLY. 18 is max for me now.

I am pretty sure I will be getting the alchy this summer.

Thanks. I dont really have a boost number I'm shooting for, I would just like a bit more pull and not worry about getting knock. I'm pretty sure the knock I get now is false from the shift.

Only ran the track once last summer, very hot and humid and I have low profile street tires so I cant leave very well. That being said the best I could run on 92 octane was 14.5.....I was really dissapointed.

This spring I'm removing the Flowmaster exhaust and getting a Pypes cat back system. Should be an improvement. I've read Steve Woods site a million times and with a good tune, even with my "bad" street tires I should be able to get into the low 13's without alchy!

I run about 18lbs now, if I get above that I get knock, especially at the shifts. Just looking to get a bit more punch without the knock issues
