Info I'd been seeking for a while
« on: August 16 2013, 11:13:31 AM »
Post 33 answered every question that I have/had.  Thanks Steve.  Majority of folks are running progressive kits, and that's cool, but my $$$$/wife tells me other wise, and seeing that I already have this kit, this post helped me out a lot.  Im only posting here so I have somewhere I an immediately turn to as I don't visit that board that often. Hopefully this can help other bums/cheapos like my self. :)

I only thought I was old then...I could crawl out from under the dash in less than two minutes even if the seat was in the car

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

Dude, you got a reputation of being THE MAN for as long as I been living. Only wish to meet you at least once!! :D  Im still trying to learn about the "3bar map" sensors and "prog" controllers alone.  Could you add them to an existing kit? etc etc..you were young then, and you're younger now(just more wiser)!! That's the way that I look at it, and always have!!!

Phil...as I recall, GM used the three bar map sensor on the '89 TTA.  They are available for purchase if you do some shopping.

On our cars, all the map sensor did was drive the led boost gauge in the dash.

Some alky kits use an internal map sensor inside the controller.  Others use a factory style 3 bar map sensor to supply the boost level to the controller.

The SMC controllers were not built to handle a very high current draw and reputedly will fail with a powerful pump.

There are some aftermarket controllers available for those that did not want to buy the entire kit.  I believe Devil's Own and Coolingmist sell controllers as well as other alky components.  Those are made for big pumps

Most like the alky control kits because they were developed specifically for our cars and all you have to do is get a night job, steal from your wife's purse to pay for it and follow the instructions to install and set it up to go have some fun.

Lol. Sounds like a plan!!! I already have an SMC kit, with instructions and all that I bought years ago.  When removed by the owner, they where running some really high numbers(25lbs of boost and 24* of timing with a TE-44).  I haven't convinced myself that my car can do the same thing, but it shows that the kit will suffice with my needs right now.  I was just wondering what steps I had to take to make it progressive IF i wanted to.  Thats all!!! :atbeer:

might just use a new controller...t hose old kits had really weak pumps and it may not work today....the smc progressive kit (I am still running two of them) has a weaker flo jet pump and they tend to stop working after a few days of sitting but I keep beating on the valve assembly until it decides to spray....

With some effort, you could get an external pump and a controller and replumb it, I guess.
