Title: 2-3 shift knock
Post by: Shimy87 on July 17 2022, 07:20:51 PM
Messing with kids car again. Seems like at the 2-3 shift the car is sensing knock. 1-2 & 3-4 are smooth but 2-3 is harsh. I dropped tranny pan to confirm tv cable is adjusted correctly. Any ideas what else this might be??

Is the converter locked in 2nd gear before the shift?

Nope

Could it be the rear end. If I remove the driveshaft how much "play" should be there? Like if it is engaging the gear at a marked 12 o'clock forward, how far backwards should I turn it before it engages backwards...if that makes sence

Don't have a logger for this car

If the 2-3 shift is hard, I am guessing that the ecm is pulling timing because it heard that thump, or maybe felt that thump is a better term.  Other than being sure the engine mounts and tranny mounts are in good condition followed by making sure the idler pulley is not hitting the AC clutch and the exhaust is not hitting somewhere along the line from the upper A arm back thru the rest of the run, I guess live with it.  If it's not slipping, I don't think I would spend any money on the the transmission at this time.

You could be on the raged edge of lean and the load from going into 3rd gear is too much.

Mark put new motor and trans mounts in car but they are cheap so replacing them. We just put a Pypes dual exhaust on the cars and no clearence or hitting issues there.

Video the scanmaster as it shifts into third.  If it shows timing retard and then immediately goes away, it is most likely just hearing/feeling the shift.  If it hangs on and diminishes more slowly, it might be lean on the shift.

Watch the timing retard and O2s on the video.

PL is cheaper than changing headgaskets. Guessing is never a good idea.

The video is a great idea

I know a PL would be good but I like to live dangerously :icon_lol:

Assuming you are running your usual near stock boost levels, this should work fine.  You might say "Now" when it shifts so you can go back and better pinpoint the shift point as it will be about one frame before you hear "now" (or maybe  less since you are younger and don't have thought to mouth lag like me.

Is this WOT knock or part throttle cruise knock?

Buick owners will go out and spend a gazzillion bucks on cool guy parts...but won't spend a couple of bucks on Powerlogger.

Not being a cool guy, not looking to get this car over stock boost ( its for my kid) and not throwing any cool parts at it, I did too much of that on mine  just trying to sort out some issues. I fought for a few weeks trying to get a scanmaster G and a powerlogger that came with the car to work last summer. The scanmaster works great, powerlogger is older and Eric said it wont ....and computer stuff is my nemisis :013:.

I tried Steves idea of videoing the scanmaster, its a scanmaster G and it must have a LED display so when you video it the display flashes in the video and you cant really read it which is a bummer

Currently no knock at like partial throttle 8 lbs of boost thru shifts, from what I can see at 12 lbs of boost thru shifts the worst I see is .8 retard at 45-50 MPH and I run it up to 80 ish mph.

I think its hearing something at the shift as if its real detonation it should continue to climb or even stay at .8 and recall that number at a higher MPH, its not so that leads me back to it hearing something at the shift.

Steve mentioned getting lean at the shift, watching the scanmaster O2's at the shift theyare in the 770 range so again I dont think thats to lean?

That is fine.  It's feeling the shift thump.  Seems like we have already discussed fuel pressure when you first got the car.

You are nowhere near hg problem territory!

Update on this...... sort of. Determined car has a Transgo shift kit in it and after many calls looks like the shop that did the work set it up very aggressively. Transgo said if i go back to the stock servo it should make it much better. Lucky for me, the local trans shop has the correct used stock part. They can do the work in a few weeks so fingers crossed this does the trick. I have the same Transgo kit in my car and its been great, turns out that the shop in my town actually worked with Transgo developing these.....luck y again!
