General Auto Tech / Job security
« on: November 20 2012, 06:53:13 PM »
Just think, this is routine maintenance, complete with mouse housing. The customer originally asked if she could wait while I put plugs in her car. I'd much rather work on my Buick.

Bitch/Whine/Moan / So anyway...I NFL failed
« on: October 05 2012, 06:32:32 PM »
And I'm checking my e-mail stuff before I get to mowing the acre of goat feed at the shop. My Park Ave Ultra is ready for replacement at 193K. I've been searching for a 96-99 Rivvy. A local pseudo dealer I've been in touch with just left with a black reconstructed title 99. I asked him on the phone if the paint was as good as displayed on the ads and he said yes. He gets here and it's door dingy marked on the right side. What the shit. That would be WTS, not WTF. So I asked him if he would be interested in trading the Ultra and a Mitsu. Mirage (My tow-behind ride). His answer: I gotta ask my wife. Now that's a WTF. Wait a minute, I'll ask my wife if I can BUY your fucking car. Just sayin.
So anyway, after being off for 2 months 1st job needing done: pull the GN tranny Sat. Done. Next PITA job Mon.: replace Cobra tranny clutch assly. and tranny. Done, on the road.
So back to the Rivvy. Gotta say, did a Google search and a Rivvy came up in Oklahoma. Who do I think of first Steve??? William Avila. I let him a message on Facebook and he calls me within a 1/2 hour, not knowing I'm from the Buick community. We talk for awhile til I realize he doesn't know who I am (not that I am anybody) He is super helpful and gets me fixed up with an acquaintance of his, Chris, who goes over and checks out the car and test drives it!!!!! Chris e-mails me next day and gives me his opinion. Bottom line, may be going to OK if I can't find something local. 96-99 Rivvy, gotta love it.

Sorry bout the small pictures. Still haven't figured out another way. Wanted to show the Willy's 800hp 9 second plan. I'm tortured enough to figure how I can get neg 1.5 degree per side to "0". GTO, safety inspection.

General Buick Tech / Let the 2012 racing season begin
« on: April 27 2012, 07:41:28 PM »
Tomorrow we T & T at Maple Grove, the weather looks iffy.  Thanks to Steve and Eric, I think the car is ready. Which means finally Thomas is behind the wheel and that we have a better chance of going rounds. Just like the Jr. Dragster, the early passes are nerve racking. So, wish us luck and hope it's a great season. On Maple Grove's website, points days are Money Trail. We're doing the fireworks display for the Lucas event on memorial day and the Big Anniversary show.

Had to reduce this pic, sorry Mark and Steve, you should get the idea though. Got this job from another shop, 06 F150 5.4. All but 2 plugs seized. Thank God for special tools. What was Henry thinking?

General Buick Tech / Thanks Mark and Dave
« on: January 11 2012, 05:56:16 PM »
I got a call at the shop Monday from a new customer. Just out of the Air Force, just bought an 87 GN. He was hunting for someone to work on the car and he wanted a GN guy, Dave and Mark sent him my way. He came in to talk about what had happened within an hour of the initial call. On the way home from the car dealer, the radiator blew and until he got a place to pull over, it started missing like a bitch. He towed it home, put a rad, water pump, NGK plugs, and a coil pack. Still missed. He took compression test, 5 & 6 dead. Joined up with a bunch of the websites and got my name from one of them, thanks to Mark and Dave. I figured I would post if anybody was interested how it's going.
Unfortunetly, he bought the car "as is". He towed it in, we started on it Tues. I first double checked compression w/the same result as him. Pulled the valve covers, first noticing dislodged exhaust pushrods 5/6, pulled em and they were bent. Looked closer and saw the valve springs were still compressed too. Pulled the heads, took em to the machine shop Wed. AM first thing. My machine shop tech, (Chad) and I looked them over and decided when the rad went, it got hot enough for the valves to stick and the rest is history. As always, money is an issue, and he hasn't even driven the thing yet. We're gonna do our best for him to get it driveable in the long term for a base to work from. Than, any mods, he can do from there. It's a nice, repainted, reupholstered, nice DD. Chad will redo both heads, expecting minimum all new exhaust guides plus the normal stuff. I'm replacing the 2 lifters and pushrods of the affected cyls. I was concerned when taking it apart of the coolant laying in the OEM air filter housing. I flushed the IC as a precaution. Also, the valves did hit the pistons. It nicked em and I seriously considered pulling the block. They weren't deep gouges but did have enough to give a small amount slag that would stick up. I studied it for the longest time. Given the finances of the situation, I decided to bring each piston up, carefully Dreml the slag and ponder again. One of those decisions you hate to make, but I think it will be fine. He isn't planning on racing it so we're gonna move on.

IHADAV8 Playground / This week's a wash
« on: September 08 2011, 11:26:07 PM »
Had to evacuate the shop Wed. at 1:00 pm. We had the fiercest rain I've ever seen. There is a retention basin beside my shop, by 4 it was overfilled. Maneuvered the GN onto the lift, filled the alignment rack w/stuff, filled the trailer, took what I could to my upper shop, put as much stuff as I could on work benches....All in about 4 hours.

General Buick Tech / Yellow Bullet @ Cecil
« on: August 31 2011, 06:32:57 PM »
My car is still in pieces. Yellow Bullet Nationals is at Cecil Co. this weekend. We are so busy at the shop I don't have enough time to work on the car. Thursday I'm gonna say to the boys: run the shop I have a car to put back together. Heads gotta go back on and I'm doing the vacuum brake conversion. If I wouldn't have had to wait so long for my parts, it would be a piece of cake, the car would've been together 2 weekends ago. Any helpful tips right now would be greatly appreciated. I'm using RJC's steel shim gaskets, ARP bolts and TA performance headers. The PN conversion seems to have the potential for problems. I'm using Casper's vacuum block. New NAPA master cylinder and rebuilt NAPA booster. Mark, I'll put pics up when it's up and running.
