Jumped on the pre-list.
Figure as more of the "facts"come out I can decide. Android based so should end up hackable soon enough...
-
What version Android OS do they have?
-
Looks like it's running 2.3. Made in the same factory as the Playbook.
-
They've started shipping FWIW
-
I was in on the 1st shipment & got it Oct. 20th The lighted case I ordered should be shipping soon. I haven't used it but Wendy uses it everyday. First charge of battery & it's at 30% usage as of yesterday. Not bad since the charge was done on Oct 28. Even tho we don't run wireless in the house, after I set up the account with info & credit card, she purchased a book sitting in the LR & it loaded in a few mins. The thing is pretty cool to me being that I'm so far behind in what's out there these days. IMO it's well worth the $100 shipped.

I don't think you are talking about the "Fire"?

If the BOM cost is ~$143, incluing the overheads, the manufacturing cost of this product could be any where between $160 to $180.
Looks like Amazon is selling it at a very low profit margin, betting on the volume?
I don't think Amazon's play here has anything to do with making money on the Kindle Fire tablet. It appears that the company has set things up so that it will break even on the sales, maybe make a couple of bucks. But the real motivation here is that Amazon saw what was happening with Apple and feared that as more people got their hands on iPads they would buy more books, music, apps, etc. from Apple. Amazon needed to get into customers' and potential customers' hands a device that would increase the chances that they would buy media directly from Amazon. You can say what you want about the design--I'm sure it's not as elegant as the iPad--but it's a brilliant move because the cost--less than half of an entry level iPad--will entice many a buyer and Amazon will at the very least put a speed bump in iPad's momentum.

It's the cheapest of the bunch at $90 on Amazon.
-
The Kindle Fire is the $199 Colour (color-usa) WIFI only unit.
-
I would wait until the dust settles this Black Friday/Christmas Season.
RIM is pushing their shitty Playbooks out, and Lenovo has a really good full featured 10/1" tablet for $299.00

McCourt said he was lowering his estimate for iPad sales after seeing data from Amazon which suggested it could have sold between 4m and 5m of its Kindle Fire tablet, "which probably means maybe 1-2m cannibalised iPad sales at most".

the fire is not as full featured as the pad, but, it probably meets the needs of most buyers that would not really use the pad features...I still am very happy with my touchpad...gre at for reading comic books on and looking up info on the net to help me in skyrim....lol
My son loaded android on his...I don't know how far they have gone in tuning it up with android, tho=he partioned it so he still has webos which I really like

Bro-in-law indirectly work for R*m, so he acquired Playb**ks for the students in the family.
Nicely integrates w berryphones, both are rather similar in the end.
My fingers are too big for any of these touch keyboards, but I do like the fire. Wish it did the whispernet3G.

I broke down and sub'd to Amazon Prime. Too often often I need to get fast shipping on
last minute items so i can maximize border trips.
The Kindle lending library is a really nice perk of Prime. Older, less popular stuff but still rather nice.
