Gas tank hard to fill at the pump
« on: May 20 2015, 11:54:08 PM »
Hey guys

I've been having an issue with my car when trying to fill the fuel tank at the gas station.   My car has an aftermarket tank that I got right after I bought the car, and honestly have no idea what brand it is.
I find that unless I hold the trigger really slow it is always burping back gas at me.  Fuel level doing this doesn't seem to matter.   Would this be a gas tank venting issue? or just modern gas pumps just flow fuel much faster now and the tank can't handle that much fuel going down the neck.

Mine is like that too. I just thought it was the new vapor recovery kind of pumps/nozzles.

Mine has done that since the day I bought it.  Best solution I have found is to try to left up on the pump handle  so that the flow coming out of the nozzle has a straighter line into the actual tank instead of being aimed at the top side of the filler tube.  That will handle the wide open flow out of a lot of pumps but every once in awhile, I find a pump that simple overwhelms the filler tube and I have to reduce the flow.

That only happens to me when it's at the Full Tank level & it will spit some gas back but otherwise it's good. I know that what Steve mentioned about the angle seems to allow faster flow.
I did know a few years back of an older Honda or something like that which I Assume had the vent tube plugged because gas had to go in so slowly that it took easily 5+ mins to put $25 in the tank. That was Crazy Slow & finally he just gave it away since a new tank was probably worth more than the car!

I'll try that next time I fill up the tank.  Thanks Steve.
Might be a bit though, the stupid brake light switch broke. I guess nothing last forever.

When filling mine, I found this works the best for me. I don't insert the pump nozzle all the way in and I point the nozzle to the right and up.  So the handle is to the left and almost rests on the bumper. I can get about half a tank in that way before she pukes.  Then I have to milk the rest.  Good luck!

^Yep.

I've also noticed better results if I let the license plate lid push up on the pump handle sometimes.

It's the bend in the filler neck.  If I hold it straight up like Earl says it works good.
