General Buick Tech / alright I'm baffled.......« on: May 09 2012, 02:01:41 AM »
Freshened up the bottom end new roller cam and springs this winter, all was good I did have what I thought was not enough preload on one lifter. Was out on the weekend cruising on the highway and it started to back fire through the intake and load and it would do it.
Pulled the valve cover to make sure it wasn't a stuck valve, rolled it over all the valves where moving, pulled the plugs and rockers rolled it over no noise, removed the push rods one at a time and narrowed it down to number 6 intake even with the plug out it sounded like it was coming up the intake. Pulled the intake and head tonight and I can't see anything obvious, no marks on the piston thought the chain might have jumped its brand new double roller, lifter appears fine link is intact pin for roller is fine. Pulled the valve there is some carbon on the back side of the intake valve not much and the seat looks ok. Layed a straight edge on all the valves they seem to be the same height any clues? 94
General Buick Tech / pushrod length« on: May 05 2012, 07:37:11 PM »
I installed a roller cam this winter with Morel lifters, sounds like I don't have enough preload on one.
Stethoscope tells me its number 6.......... of course couldn't be 1 or 2. I tried to measure it with an adjustable no luck. The pushrods are 8.050 long and don't appear to be bent I'm assuming its the install height on the valve. Guess I''l pick up a 8.075 and see if that quietens things see what happens when you fix all your exhaust leaks! I did find one at a buddys that is out of a ford that's 8.090 should I try it or will that create other problems? Everything else is a couple days away I live in the sticks 95
General Buick Tech / Pig rich« on: April 24 2012, 01:07:02 PM »
So I was repairing some exhust leaks PS header was leaking at heads had blown out a gasket, turbo to down pipe connection was leaking. I installed studs in the exhuast housing replaced the gasket at the header.
I was suffering from a high blm condition and a lean stubble at tip in, WOT it pulled great before the repairs. Finished it late last night reset the ECM fired it up and it warmed up a little rich but that is not unusual, took it for a road test and started to ease into it got about half throttle WB drops to 10.0 it sputters and stops accelerating let off and wb gets back to 14-15 drives fine hit the throttle again same thing. Pull it into the shop block learn is 115 and its idling pig rich. SES lights up 02 sensor rich, so I'll check the 02 sensor it is brand new, see if I bumped the TPS and check all my hose conections any thing else I should look for tomorrow night? 96

General Auto Tech / oil pressure« on: April 18 2012, 03:19:43 PM »
I was pulling my hair out with a low oil pressure issue when heat soaked......
Bought a TA shim kit pulled my pump apart and tightened the clearance .002 well it changed a bit still not happy since it has a freshly polished crank and new bearing. Then the little light and I mean little.... goes off, when I was putting it back together I used thread sealer on the distribution block and the sending unit for my gauge (no leaks). Pick up a mechanical gauge 60 PSI cruising at 2000rpm and no less than 30 hot idle. I run Schaeffers Micron Moly 20-50 should I worry these pressures are to high and try a lighter weight oil ? 98

Car Stereo and Electronics / Tach issue« on: February 18 2012, 12:14:50 AM »
Alright before I rip it out and take it back I purchased a Proform tach for the Buick, hooked it up and it does work sort of.......... as long as the revs are above 1400rpm it works fine below that it jumps to about 5000 rpm then to 0 until the rpm is over 1400 again, if I hit the memory button it climbs to 11000rpm. I know its a POS but I liked to look it matched the other gauges I have got any ideas before I replace it?

General Buick Tech / front end« on: December 31 2010, 07:23:46 PM »
So I decided 1 of my many winter projects was going to be a major overhaul of the front end. Good idea as i have discovered a few conditions that needed to be addressed. Upper PS control arm bushing where beyond done. PS spring broken (6 inches off the bottom coil of the spring). Ball joints where questionable.
I have the new ball joints and bushings installed, a set of QA1 adjustables shocks for the front are on the way. Here are some pic's of the carnage, should i just cut the good spring to match? http://photoshare.shaw.ca/messages/viewthumb/11999180617-1293841154-35431/parm/page/1/15/ The good one has a bit of a bow to it when stood up? Think that bushing was toast? 103

A guy in California hears from his girl friend that she is taking a new job in Hawaii.
Despondent he takes a walk on the beach and uncovers a Jeanie bottle. He decides to clean it up and releases the Jeanie the Jeanie grants 1 wish. " I want a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive to see my girl friend I hate flying" The Jeanie replies "are you out of your mind I can't do that it is impossible the ocean is too deep the currents the weather it just won't work pick something else" " OK than I want to understand women" The Jeanie replies " a 4 lane or 2 lane bridge?" |
