IHADAV8 Playground / Buick vs Ford 2017
« on: November 01 2017, 09:41:12 AM »
Swapped out the street shoes for the racing shoes. Taking the car up to work with me today and took Saturday off for the event. Working days this hitch, so I hope to head over to Noble Friday evening.  Weather forecast is looking favorable. Lows in the 50's with highs in the 70's.

IHADAV8 Playground / Front spoiler

Picked up this aftermarket front spoiler at BG. It's about an inch wider than the stock piece.  I have been looking for an original for some time and settled on this. Trying to decide if I'm going to trim the width....

Thought I'd start a thread for posting up pics and anything else.  Been watching the weather pretty close and decided to make a run for it.  I've been planning this trip for 6 months, at least that's what the wife told me, so I'm gonna cannonball that way after work this evening. For sure going to get rained on the drive over.

General Buick Tech / Steel vs aluminum drums
« on: August 20 2017, 09:10:15 PM »
Had a fella tell me I shouldn't be holding too much boost on the foot brake with aluminum drums. Said they will crack and come apart on me.

I realize boost is relative depending on lots of other variables. Is there a torque number out there to be leary of or is this dude smoking crack?

As I see it, I save 5 lbs a side with the aluminum drums.

IHADAV8 Playground / Car hauler
« on: August 10 2017, 01:24:51 PM »
Been wanting an aluminum car hauler for some time now as I've had my steel trailer for over 20 years. It's still a damn good trailer and I'll be keeping it. Just wanted something a little lighter and had a rock guard to pull behind the Wagoneer. Did some shopping these past few weeks and ran across this one year old Sundowner. 19' with a rock guard. Didn't have time to shake down the Wagoneer for this years summer last blast up in Vernon, so the Cummins had duty.

IHADAV8 Playground / Anybody ever purchase from these guys?
« on: July 04 2017, 03:27:00 PM »
Been looking at recovering the Limited's seats. Gbody lists the covers as does highway stars but neither come close on the price of these guys.

Wonder if both Gbody and stars order from here and then add in a little mark up

IHADAV8 Playground / Friends new to him turbo Buick
« on: January 21 2017, 11:21:49 PM »
So a friend of mine's little brother bought himself an 86 T type. He's a younger fella, just starting a family and all. He's been trying to get this thing going and has called a few times with some basic questions. I defer to Steve's site in the hope that he reads. Anyways, he says he wants me to look at the car so I agree for him to bring it over this morning....  Man was I in for a surprise. I'll just let the pics do the talking

General Buick Tech / Whatta ya know...
« on: December 04 2016, 01:56:01 PM »
Decided to disconnect the analog tach and boost guage on the factory dash. At idle, it displayed 3k on the tach and at 3lbs of boost. Kind of annoying. Got it all apart, fished for the connector, disconnected and then back together.  Turn the key and the alky pump is spraying.... Turn the key off. Turn the key on again and the alky pump is spraying...  Disassembled again, fished the connector out and reconnected the factory tach and boost guage. Reassembled, turn the key and the pump is off like it's supposed to be.  I guess I'll have to live with it till I figure out what's going on with the circuit.

General Buick Tech / Plugs or governor?
« on: November 23 2016, 09:00:55 PM »
i was thinking today about the mod I did on my governor to raise the shift point and then I got to thinking maybe I have too hot of a plug.

I guess what I'm asking here is what would be the symptoms of a plug that's too hot? Detonation via KR on the log?  Are there other signs? How would you read the plug to tell if it's too hot? What would be a tell tell sign of blowing out the spark vs the plug being too hot? No detonation if its blowing out the spark?

IHADAV8 Playground / Boost control theory
« on: October 29 2016, 11:12:24 PM »
i have some ideas about the exhaust gas drive pressure through the waste gate hole on the turbine side and wanted to bounce them off you smart guys.

When the compression is increased in the cylinder does this correlate to higher exhaust pressure/volume?

If so, would the waste gate hole size on the turbine housing need to be enlarged for the higher pressure/volume of air moving thru the turbine housing to be able to control the boost?

The reason I am posing these questions is that I have not been able to get the boost on my car below 20 psi with this 6262 and precision .63 housing.  The waste gate hole has not been opened up. I put a stock actuator on it this evening and was still unable to get below 20 psi boost.

IHADAV8 Playground / The new daily driver
« on: October 28 2016, 11:12:40 PM »
As most folks know, my daughter had a a little fender bender a few weeks back that led to some car swapping around the house. I had my eye on this little gem that a friend had picked up and the timing worked out in my favor. 1993 Camaro Z28.

It ran rough and was spewing oil from the pressure transducer just above the oil filter.  After a little haggling, we agreed on a price and I took it home. $30  and 30 minutes later there was no more oil leak.  Also found two plug wires not even connected to the plugs. Running smoother now but still not there yet.  Took some time at work to research the old opti spark and found a great vendor for third and fourth gen camaro/firebirds. Ordered up an MSD opti spark and wires.  Got some plugs locally. Watched some YouTube vids and then called Rich and Brad to get some pointers. In 93 the opti spark was not vented but the new MSD set up came with the vented cover as well as vacuum lines and check valves to make it work.

Got started on it today and it wasn't that bad except for the corroded terminals on what I believe is the original cap and rotor. Of course there were other things that popped up but I had the front tore down anyway so new seals for the crank and opti spark drive as well as a new water pump.  The old pump had signs of leakage out of the weep hole and appeared to be missing the drive bearing cover. It also didn't sound so good when turning the pump. New belt tensioner bearing and a new belt. Not real sold on the reverse flow cooling system. It's a pain to bleed.  Two new cooling fan motors were in the trunk so on they went as well. Fired it up and really running smooth. Ran out of time and had to clean up to make it to Friday night lights to watch the kids march in the band. Brakes and tranny filter are on the list for tomorrow.  May get to may not... We'll see

IHADAV8 Playground / A little fender bender
« on: October 13 2016, 08:11:09 PM »
Had a reminder today about my priorities.

Here am getting ready to go drag some ford ass this weekend and as I am getting out of my truck after positioning it to load my car, I see my daughter coming down the road. She was headed home with her brother after school as usual. I shut the door on my truck and hear the sound of two cars rubbing metal together. Look up and see my daughters car vear off into the neighbors yard. I start running down the road and see my daughter and son getting out of the car. Neighbor was backing out of his driveway while texting. My daughter sees me and yells to me that they were ok. I slow to a jog and as I get there I see that she is crying.  Tells me she's so glad that her brother wasn't hurt because he was in the passenger seat.

Funny thing is that they had just passed a police car up the road a bit and that policeman pulls up almost immediately. Gets out of the car and asks if this is my daughter. I say yes. He says, "Well, I know she wasn't speeding and I know they both were wearing their seat belts."  Then he asks if everyone is ok. We exchange insurance info and I drive the car back to the house on a flat front tire. Only about 100 yards to the house. Can't roll up the passenger window, so under the carport it goes.

She had to be at work at HEB at 430 so I give her the keys to the Wagoneer and she heads off. I'm both surprised and proud of her. First for being concerned about her brother and second for getting back behind the wheel.

Always exciting 'round here

IHADAV8 Playground / 2016 Ford vs Buick
« on: October 12 2016, 10:56:54 AM »
Luckily I'm off hitch this week of the event. Driving up to Noble on Friday morning. Event starts that evening and again on Saturday. Hope the weather holds. I'll throw up pics when I can. It will be a big test of unknowns for me.  SD2, radial slicks, exhaust, 6262, and suspension setup. Tuning will be my biggest hurdle. I hope to get some test passes Friday evening and a few more in the qualifying on Saturday before the elimination rounds.
