burning oil

Well out of the blue ( no pun intended) it started smoking this weekend? My question is can I run it by-passing the turbo, so I can determine if its the turbo pushing oil in or a worse problem? I was just going to plumb it from the MAF to the intake, stay out of boost obviously, and see if the smoking stops. Also was going to put a white rag over the output of the intercooler and see if it gets oily?
 
Any suggestions?

Why not look at the inside of the pipe going to the throttle body and see if is oily? Also remove the maf pipe from the turbo, grab the nut that secures the compressor wheel and check the out and in movement on the shaft.  Should be imperceptible or almost imperceptible. Then check lateral movement. Wheel should not touch the housing.

Oil in pipe and can move impeller shaft in and out 1/8 inch  So looks like I need a turbo, with my current equipment what would you recommend? Also where to purchase? Assuming they cant be rebuilt?

It's dead. 44 and 49's have been replaced with a new, similar model... See full throttle speed.  Or,  yes, they can be rebuilt

Contact Bison on the other board. He'll tailor make you one...and he won't push the BB version down your throat.
