accumulator ball or pm?
« on: July 03 2009, 08:42:03 PM »
first off.. i dont want to do a vac brake conversion. when i hit the brake the brake light goes on and i have a hard pedal  little to no brakes then once the light goes out it'll fall and have brakes fine. to my understanding this is the accumulator ball. so.. do i just swap the ball or the whole pm?

Sounds like the ball to me, I just bit the bullet and went to vacuum. Couldn't find an accumulator for less than $250, and if you do find one, Lord knows how old the damn thing is.

What problems???  I never had an issue with vac brakes ...now PM brakes ..good god!!! I could write a novel on the problems I have had with that system.

Both systems have there ups and downs. If all you need is a ball then just do that. If your PM is still original, its a good chance the motor and pressure switch can be going out too.  To replace the complete PM or VB conversion the correct way can be close in $$$ spent. Either will work fine when done.

I got mine from Red Regal T o TBS for about 200 bones. I still have one of the last PM's made, as I had the entire system replaced a few years back. If my buddy doesn't want it, it's yours. The ball is blown to shit, but it has the right switch and a the entire master is new. Let me ask him.

You can buy any junk G-body and get the entire  "conversion kit"
really cheap. I kept the entire setup from my '86 Grand Prix just in case.
Remember that you also need the pedal assembly too.
However, I'd try fixing the powermonster first ...

Avoid vacuum at all costs, despite what the chum-smugglers above said. Unless you never want build boost on the line again...

Was there ever any news about a new aftermarket company making PMs again? I thought I'd heard whisperings. Up until a few years ago you could get an entire new PM from AutoZone with a lifetime warranty for around $350...I wish that deal would come back- as soon as it does I'm putting a .270 round through the vac setup before I switch back.
