Title: Pushed back my first plane last night
Post by: Ttype83 on February 05 2007, 12:03:59 PM
Last night I had one of my planes delayed going out, the ground handlers had to leave to go to another plane. They told me to call when we were ready to go, I called about 15 minutes before to give them time to get back....20 minutes and they still haven't shown up, I'm with-in minutes of losing the crew due to their duty day (FAA restricts total time from wake up to landing) So I jump in the tug and grab a Mechanic(all the others run and hide), I've watched and helped for over 20 years so how hard can it be....
Plane is 174 feet wingtip to wingtip and weights about 450,000lbs  :bigeyes;
I was going so slow the Capt. called asking if there was a problem, just told him the Tug was having problems (when it was the driver scared shitless)  :rofl; If any of you have watch the tugs push planes around at the airport, this is what I did...only on a very large plane.

Sweet man!  I have wanted to do that for a while now.  I did get to marshall a few out, but pushing one back is way cooler.  Nice man.

I marshall all the time, I can park spin a plane were others can't. But pushing it is a big diff...

I would've been scared shitless too. How many millions
of dollars do you think were at stake ? Although, I've
always wanted to try steering the back of a tiller style fire truck.
It'd be bitchin' to go down the highway hangin' out across 3 lanes !  :supz:

LoL, RR, your funny.

And Jim, your crazy! But I commend your bravery by grabbing the bull by the horns.

I can imagine how you were acting when you did it and after. Are 'ya still gigglin'? lol

Hey sucker.....
I used to push back 747's and L1011's and MD80's,  almost daily,  yes its scary,  yes its unnerving.    but never with passengers, always in and out of the hangers,
or to fuel  depot, used to have so much time in and on a Hough 500  that  had to look when I got in my own truck,LOL
fun huh?  tow bar  always go  the other way!

Where do you work? I work for FedEx at the airport and push back the airplanes everyday, definetly a fun experience.

I work for World Airways, mostly in ATL right beside FedEx.
Do you use the newer SuperTugs? I used the old tug and towbar...crap does it look bigger sitting in the tug.
