Getting ready to leave in the morning. I plan to be on the road by 4 am, arriving in Ely 14 hours later.....a little 'last hurrah' before I live in Salt Lake for 2 1/2 weeks starting Monday. Holga's loaded up....I'm hoping to get a picture of that billboard I saw on 666 a couple of months ago advertising the 'KFC on 666'.
-
Good luck to you, congrats...... :atbeer:
-
...and so it begins....
-
Woot! Take along a spare roll or two man, I'm sure you'll burn through them. I'll suggest Kodak 400NC.
Anyway, good luck on your truckers tan.
-
:atbeer: Good luck, and remember that a "No Lizzards" sticker on the truck means
the exact opposite ! ...Oh yeah, always be polite to D.O.T. no matter how much they may piss you off. They could really make your life hell. :supz:
-
Have a beer or 2 for us!!!!
-
Damn, I made you buy a Holga. Now you need a Mamiya Universal with a Pola back. I MIGHT have to send you mine...

A long, beautiful drive is that between my house and here at my favorite cheapy motel on Aultman street in Ely. I believe I made it here in about 13 hours flat. As soon as dark fell, I took a quick drive around town (which doesn't take long in Ely)...past old houses that I lived in when I was 17, the brothels (the front doors wide open, whores in full view...talk about window shopping!), past Champs bar where there that Shoshone picked a fight with me but we were too drunk to fight so I just went home with those two chicks who were realistically both a 6 out of 10 but looked like 8s 'cause I was drunk and they were both in the mood, the cemetery where I sat at night and pondered life perhaps too deeply, etc., etc. I could drive around here all night remembering old times, but instead stopped at the gas station, picked up some barley pop and came back to the room where -at my accelerated age- basic cable is the most exciting thing that will be going down. Tomorrow morning I'll catch breakfast at the Silver State restaurant (eat your heart out, Greg) and head into Salt Lake. Thanks for bein' pals and keepin' me company guys, it means alot.

Fuckin' awesome! What's sad is that most will never get to know the feeling you have right now about anything in their meaningless lives.

Kick some ass at England.
I signed up with JB Hunt back in '94 and used them to get my CDL and training. They sent me to a school in Philadelphia for a month and learning to drive tractor/trailer in downtown Philly is something I'll never forget.
You will need lots of Anti-perspirant.
-
Nice story Sylvan. I uploaded a Deadbolt song in the jukebox in the General section, I think you'll like it. It's called 'Truck Drivin Son of a Bitch.'

Oh, and get some kind of flip flop shoes for the truck stop showers, trust me!
I used to take showers like a fuckin' ballerina up on my toes.

It sucks gettin' athlete's foot.
You'd probably be lucky if that's all you get.
I use to plan my trips around the Flying J stops they are owned by the mormons and are the cleanest places around.

OH MAN! That is the best place for breakfast. I love eating there, the food, the vibe, the decor, etc....
I am picturing the entire town as you wrote it. Making me 'homesick' now! :D :supz:

Good luck on your journeys!!

8:07 PM- Monticello, Utah
England is a no-go. I left Ely this morning at around 8 (with an aching head....hangov er story in a moment). I got to England headquarters around 1 or so; there's llike a million trucking HQs in the same few blocks and it's pretty hectic. I walked into this enormous building and it looked like a damn Greyhound station. By that I mean to say that although it was clean and new it was packed with all kindsa shady folks walkin' around, hanging around, etc. I got my room key and went upstairs to check out my 'dorm room'. On the trek up there I was getting a major 'something here is vibing wird' feeling and just did not like the place. Then, I opened the 'dorm room' door.....the room was identical to a prison cell. Not at all groovy. Tiny metal bunk beds in a 10x10 room....and all the bottom bunks are spoken for. No one was in the room, so nobody saw the "Aw HELLS no!" look I must've been wearing. Now, I'm not a superstitious person, but when my gut tells me something I usually go with it.....and my gut said to get the F out of there. I can't really explain it, but that place did not agree with me. I went back out to the car and called the wife. With an almost cracking voice I told her, 'Toots, I don't think this place is gonna work out'. I fully expected a response along the lines of, 'Oh, so this has just been a vacation/rod trip for you, asshole?' but the best thing about the missus is she's way rad when I need her support so she just said, 'Then come on home'. I turned my key back in and jumped on I-15 south. So, I've been headed back toward home all afternoon and am stopping here for the night.....beca use I've got the leftovers of a nasty hangover. Reason being- last night I got about 10 Coors Lights into me and allowed the nostalgia to run wild. Naturally, it wasn't long before (around 1 am) I decided 'fuck this, I'm in Ely and I'm at least gonna go out for a beer at the Hotel Nevada'. So I strolled the few blocks, enjoying the Ely night air like I never left. I entered the Hotel and went over to the bar (24 hours). I used to know a real punk named Troy who I almost strangled once for thinking he was sneaky and trying shit with my then girlfriend way back in the day. Last I heard (about 3 years ago) he had been working at the Hotel. So, I ask my bartender if he still worked there.....Mr. Barkeep got a real sour look on his face...come to find out that Mr. Bartender would LOVE to kick Troy repeatedly in the fudge pucker. Long story short, he proceeded to give me free Jager shot after free Jager shot in return for dirt on Troy and his family.....and his family is: Mom- small town bar slut, Dad- MIA, Sister- small town bar slut part 2 and Brother- toothless retard. Me and my bartender had a lot of laughs, but I had to cut myself off before I fell off the barstool. So, I stumbled back to the motel and all-in-all I think that little walk and a few drinks at the Hotel equal a very fulfilling trip even if not for the reason I took it.

Heres a little story for you...
A Nevada State Trooper pulled a car over on I-15.
When the Trooper asked the driver why he was speeding, the driver said he
was a magician and juggler and was on his way to Albaquerque to do a show at
the Circus, and he didn't want to be late. The Trooper told the driver
he was fascinated by juggling and asked if the driver would do a little
juggling for him then he wouldn't give him a ticket.
He told the Trooper he had sent his equipment ahead and didn't have
anything to juggle.
The Trooper said he had some flares in the trunk and asked if he could
juggle them. The juggler said he could, so the Trooper got 3 flares, lit
them and handed them to him.
While the man was juggling, a car pulled in behind the patrol car, a
drunken good old boy from New Mexico got out, watched the performance, then
went over to the patrol car, opened the rear door and got in.
The Trooper observed him and went over to the patrol car, opened the door
and was almost knocked over by the smell of Jager. He then asked the drunk what he thought he was doing.
The drunk replied, "You might as well take my ass to jail, cause there's
no way in hell I can pass that test motherfucker."

LMFAO! Nice!
Good story Sylvan, whenever you miss out on the bottom bunk it's usually somewhere you don't wanna be. Like jail, top bunks suck.

My brother and I had bunk beds when we were kids. I had the top bunk.
He used to stick his feet up against the bottom of my bed, and kick it up in the air
nearly knocking me outta bed. Then he'd laugh his ass off. One night
he did it and the bed collapsed on top of him dumping me on the floor. I'm
still laughing my ass off. :rofl;
-
Okay, quaint little story Sylvan, I need to know how the breakfast at the Silverstate Restaurant was? You know, the important stuff!!!
Hotel Nevada. Cool place that has a walk of fame in the front of it. You go inside and you just have to stay a while.
The Jailhouse is one of my favorite steak houses to eat in.
Listen boys, we need to have a roady up there. We should do it on a Silverstate Race weekend just so we have something to look at. Who's in?
-
I am, I told Sylvan this already. I'm trying to get a friend to film it. I think I'd have a fucking field day there with all my cameras. Do they have those hotels with the tacky wallpaper peeling?

Brian, they have WHOREHOUSES with the wallpaper peeling...
-
Yes they do! ACK!
-
I just did a hipthrust of satisfaction!
-
Yes they do! ACK!
Well, Greg and I are *told*...
-
P.S. Greg just reminded me of the psycho cop in Stephen King's book 'Desperation' that kept yelling "Tak!"....the book was inspired by how creepy Ruth Nevada is. I'm pissed that he found out about my town.
-
Blah blah blah...
Tell me about the breakfast! How dare YOU dangle THAT out there and not tell ME how it was!!!
-

Greg, I skipped it. The chicken fried steak and eggs at the Hotel Nevada is the greatest breakfast anyone has ever experienced, so I opted for that. Years ago, they must've had a new cook 'cause it was under cooked and I love it so much that I ate it anyway.....and got food poisoning which resulted in me shitting my guts out for about 12 hours in an office trailer in the oilfield in Railroad valley.....and it's good enough to go back for still. On the up-side, I *did* drive by "Chocolate Cake Mountain". lol
But the Silver State *does* have better Elk kill Polaroids tacked to the wall by the register. Ely....they're all about drinkin' and killin'....I think Brian will get protein stains in his Underoos if he goes with us in May.
-
I ate dinner at the Hotel Nevada once and have stayed with the Jailhouse for dinner and SSR for breakfast.
I, of course, do ALL my drinking at the Stardust Ranch. I will HAVE to dig up my Ely pics and post 'em here to generate some interest.

I didn't know that was John Schneider driving the General Lee either. I wonder if thats the same car he just sold at Barrett/Jackson ?

Yeah, I knew he owned one of them and was still driving it at one time. I remember he did sell one of them at Barrett/Jackson, like last year also. How many are there out there that are org?????
I was in amazement last night because they had Tony Stewart sold his Nascar for $300k! Plus threw in his Nascar Ring and his helmet etc. The money went for Charity. Even Jackson himself was bidding on it. It was amazing. Just amazing to see. The Batmobile went for $185,000.
-
From what I've heard, that Batmobile was a replica. I think the real one
would've gone for over a million.

You are correct sir!!

Yes, he was/is still driving one the 309 General Lee's that were used on the show. It is believed that 23 still exist today according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Lee_(car)
I have seen the General Lee several times at the Silverstate and I know John Schneider reasonably well. He is funny and very nice about autographs and all the attention he gets.
-
Thats cool. I've heard equally good regarding Paul Newman. I've yet to meet him
though. Probably this year at the nationals. Providing that the SCCA doesn't drop GT3.

Here is a shot of John Schneider and my corvette...

Donna, STFU. I'm serious.
Can somebody please tell me what the hell thread we're looking at on t6p? I have a better chance of getting into the MLB Hall Of Fame than I do of viewing that thread....and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Mind you that mine's not a wife-beater (life-partner-beater) and I've got a mustard stain (as opposed to his mayo stain)...which makes it masculine, right?

No, the mustard stain only means that you're a slob.

I'm glad you cleared that up, Rob.

It's better than the life of a Dino and a Grifter. It can't be easy conning people when you are an 8 ton pea-brained reptilian behemoth.
