Hey rockers.
I need a SMALL practice amp (remember, I live (and want to stay) in an apartment), I am thinking Sam Ash, there's a location very close to me.

Also - I assume I also need the following:
Tuner
Strap
Picks
What else?
WTH is Sylvan?

You know what? What kind of sound are you going for and how much do you want to spend? I'm a big fan of Fender amps, but if you want distortion you'll hate me. Figure out who you want to sound like and we can go from there.
-
Thanks for the link Phil - but it doesn't come up for some reaso.
Natty - I'm looking for distortion, and generally a hard rock sound.
Someone receommended this on another forum:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_roland_cube_15_1x8_15w_guitar_combo_amp?full_sku=480022
Roland Cube 8" 15W..
Insights?
Oh - and I don't want to spend much at all - I'm not even sure I will persure it too long. Don't want to spend $xxx on an amp I will just have to sell later.

Give us some examples on what you mean by a hard rock sound.
Name some bands/guitarists that have the sound you're looking for.
Include some song titles...

Wow.. That's tough.
VH, AC/DC, 80's hair bands, some Queensryche (not acoustic)

You cock rocker! Shit, I'd say get a Marshall, but that Roland looks damn good. I'd say try them both out.
-
Dude, you said:
1. Small
2. Practice
3. Cheap
With that criteria all amps start to sound pretty much the same. Once you upgrade to a combo/club amp, then you'll need to worry about what kind.

I'd recommend going a little larger than a practice amp.
I'd say something in the 30 to 100 watt range. Hear me out.
Find something that sounds clean, and then get a lower end
effects processor to go with it. That'll produce 99% of the sounds
you're looking for. An amp in that range will likely have a single 12"
speaker, and will be capable of some low end as well as crunch.
It'll produce a warm sound when playing clean as well. You won't
have to crank it to get the right sound, and should you become
proficient enough, it'll work for jamming in a garage or basement.
-
Rob makes a good point. I think we need a better idea of A: your price range and B: exactly what sound you're looking for. With that, I think we can give you better conflicting advice. :D
-
I'll throw this out...
Get a very cheap Fender and be done with it... Chances are in about a year you wont touch the guitar again...
-
Yeah man, Phil made since for once. Buy a cheapy, if you want to go deeper, do it when you feel like you'll dedicate more time to it. You said it yourself "I'm not even sure I will persure it too long"
-
If it sounds right, you'll be more likely to pursue it.
-
he doesnt even know what sounds right...
Remember when you first started playing... nothign sounded right even with the right equipment... it sounded good but never an exact match....
Supersix get a cheap amp
a cheap fender under 200
-
I have to disagree with you there. As far as sounding right, you
can tell right away, not to the ability of a seasoned player
but you can tell. I say that because, he could be playing something correct, but because of a cheap setup, it'll sound wrong causing him to become discouraged.
I believe that he could find a good sounding amp for under $200 though.
-
I'll disagree with you on that.
He doesn't have the ear to even know what sounds right yet... Listening to music and playing it sounds two different ways...
stay under cheap fender... not the piggy back ones but a small 8 inch speaker fender amp will be fine with the fender sqiar
-
S6, don't let these bozos bully you into a Fender....any amp that is cheap is going to sound decent at best. And Fenders are only sometimes that big of a deal, anyways. Amp sound relies more on the speakers than the make. ANYTHING with a set of 12" Celestion G12T-100's will tear shit UP.....whether it's a Randall RG200G2 or a Marshall VS80. But that's bigger than you're looking for right now. I've had countless friends who got excited about guitar and bought up a bunch of stuff initially..... but statistically speaking, your stuff with be on ebay soon.
-
Even something as simple as a Peavy Bandit 65. I've had one for years and it still works fine.
-
Probably still overkill. After all, if a kid who just got his learner's permit asked you, "Which should I get, a GN or a T?"....you'd tell him to worry about getting good at driving first, right?

I blew up my first "practice amp because I had to crank it to get good sound from it.
After that I got a Kustom 60 watt head that was covered in blue metal flake
foam padding. That thing cranked ! When that blew because of a speaker shorting out, I bought the Peavy.
-
Actually, my first amp was a little Gorilla and I was never able to blow that thing.

Ah ha ha ha ! You tried to blow a Gorilla ! :rofl;
-
LoL....RR
-

I'd rather blow a Gorilla than play a Peavey.
EDIT: I just noticed something- the Gorilla bears the GN coloring!

Your GN was destiny
Actually, and I'm not bullshitting here, in the soapbox derby when I was a little kid the car I made was black with a red and a yellow stripe. I was meant for these cars.....just not the shitheap I currently own.
-
...Fenders are only sometimes that big of a deal, anyways...
Eat my tone bitch!
Anyways, whatever you get, get an amp with a headphone output jack, so you can rock out in your undies at 2am. I will say whatever amp you buy, make sure it's not a Crate. And as much as I hate to say this, an amp with built in effects will come in handy. When you start becoming a tone junky, then you can build your army of stomp boxes and/or processors ( :jerkit; )
But Sylvan made a good point, it's like booze. You get what you pay for. And when you just start drinking, it all tastes like shit anyways. :atbeer:
-
I've owned some kick ass Crates in my day that had DSPs that would give the darkest corners of Roger Waters' mind the shivers.
-
Your GN was destiny
He blew that too ! :rofl;
