Maybe 'cause most of the ricers couldn't handle V8 power.

I think I may be responsible for starting the whole ricer thing. I had
an '82 Chevy Celebrity years ago, that I put a wing (camaro), low profile tires,
Chain steering wheel, and a bug catcher from a Dyers 6:71 blower.
I had the butterflies hooked up to the throttle body with a bicycle
cable so that they'd open when I revved the engine (2.5 liter 4 cyl)
It was blue with 2 gold racing stripes on it, and it also had a pounding stereo system.
I used to get pulled over for loud stereo all the time. I'd usually
be cranking something like Accept - Balls to the Wall
It used to be my Mom's car, and I did the whole thing as a spoof, but
unfortunately it caught on...
