Title: Hellcat Shopping
Post by: motorhead on June 06 2017, 09:25:13 AM
Anyone else get permission from their spouse to do this? We figure the bottom is going to fall out of the market with the Demon coming and now may very well be the time to act in order to get one in decent condition.

Hopefully we can get rid of the TBSS and move into a manual trans, low option, Challenger.  As both of the girls are now in forward facing car seats this opens a world of opportunity for vehicle selection.

I kind of want a white one.

I think they are cool, but id rather have a Camaro. Z/28 or zl1 and you couldn't get me to have a manual in my personal vehicle. Hellcat is cool though. They move and sound real good .

Not sure you are going to have much option with regard to options.

They are really nice cars, tho.  And compared to the competitors, they are really comfortable to go down the road in.  The manual is not so quick, but is probably more fun on an open patch of asphalt.

Not following the logic - after the bottom drop out the price goes down? why buy before?

Pretty sure the Demon is such low level production that it will have any effect on Hellcat pricing.  the Hellcat is much better for everyday driving

I literally got the "feel free to start looking" speech on the way in to work this morning. I doubt it will happen this summer as we are still recovering from the wagon build (talk about project cost over runs) - so we have some time to see what is going to happen with the market.

The idea here is to get a nice GT car for long road trips (not involving us picking up furniture from the in-laws like this past weekend), so maximum performance/track readiness is not a requirement.  I do really like the idea of a 1LE Camaro as well (would make for a better auto-x car).

I am pretty convinced that the Hellcat market is due to burst, and not just because of the Demon, because both the US and Canadian markets are saturated with the things.  And at 49K-65K each that is a lot of overhead siting on the lots; there are numerous unsold 2016s waiting (we are 3/4 the way through the 2017 MY too).

Vanishing Point dreams - I have them.

Cool car - I just don't like to have that much capital tied into something with 4 wheels. If I did - ecobeast raptor all the way!

Our friend, William Avila, works for a Ford dealer.  He sold several raptors this past month.  You can spend a 100k for one of those damn things

My final toy is gonna be a Z06. Bullet proof engine and silly gas mileage with the 6 speed. Got 40 G's to blow on one. Not sure what year that will get me. Keeping the GN to race.

For that king of scratch, I'd buy a real car.

One that does everything better.

What car is that?

I know that a Hellcat isn't the best all around car, but it does have the most appeal to me.  I really like the looks of the Challenger, it has all of the right pieces in place (power, brakes, handling, etc) has good aftermarket support, it is built in my hometown (completely surprised I never worked in the plant),  and I get employee pricing on parts through a buddy (so servicing it might suck less in the long run).

Like I always tell people, get what you want!  I posted a while back seeing them advertised here for $79K, so I'm sure you can do better than that.  Let us know how you make out!

Just got a call back from our insurance broker: $870-879/yr depending if it is a 2015 or 2016/17 MY. Canadian dollars.

Good Luck shopping Mike. I grew up on Mopars so the older ones bring back a lot of memories.

Couldnt you pick up a 13 or 14 low mile challanger and add a procharger and other  improvements and end up with a faster/better car for quite a bit less $$$     plus the fun of doing it  :D

Still not a Hellcat.

I have other cars that I can fart around with.  I want something that drives perfectly stock and stomps on everything around it.  The TBSS is that vehicle now, but is getting long in the tooth.

There is a couple of guys in town with twin turbo SRT 7.2 liters.  One guy dynoed 1325hp at the rear wheel.

Yeah, a guy at Joes track at Napierville showed up with one with a ton of mods. Ran a 13.x. Hellokittys are the laughing stock in these parts.

two of my  friends have them, one white, one gray.
they love em!  but at 4200+ lbs, it NEEDS that much  HP to be fast,

they both said  not  a poor mans toy, as tags (in Kalif) and ins  are ballistic!

( owners are Neil Stewart, and Lou Czarnota) ( yes, THAT Lou!)

I could change that impression pretty easily.

No matter what car & power it makes if the driver has little to no experience it usually runs slow, but the same car with a Good driver can be putting other guys on the trailer. Just because they have the $$ to spend on 600+ HP cars I would bet most have little to no track days. Give Mike a half dozen weekends to sort out the car & you might have a new found respect for them. ;)

Don't get me wrong I Love my car & have had so many great weekends at the track but I would also enjoy a few track days with some of these newer high HP cars. The Tech & the Ride must be complete night & day from an 87.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

FWIW, when we took the unproven TBSS on Drag Week last year there was a lot of shit talking that happened about its performance out of the box (mid-13s, slower 60' short times), over the course of 9 passes (nine passes) I tuned and drove the truck into the 11s and pulled 1.6 60's.  There was no redaction of earlier comments - but, the naysayers were silenced (I think it is still the 7th quickest/fast SBE AWD full weight truck in North America?).  Natasha's (effectively) stock LS1 Camaro smashed the confidence of many heads, cam, intake cars (and supercharged cars) with just a tune, exhaust, and gears.

The driver/owner is the difference.

So if you are telling me that I can slide into a 10 second car that has all the amenities that a modern car should have, a warranty, is safer, and just looks wicked - what would keep me from pursuing one?  The stigma of "buying" it? 99% if that is envy.
