Title: Restoration
Post by: RightyTighty on May 31 2017, 07:50:22 PM
So I guess I'm just doing a frame up restoration minus messing with my dash because it's perfect and I'm just not going there.

Where is Gary Wells and his opinions when I need him?

I want to roll my fenders but I'm worried. No mods have been done to the body other than the rear seat braces. I don't know if I should do it or not.

Opinions?

Why?

Post by: good2win22 on May 31 2017, 09:21:22 PM
Do you like the look of a wide tire? If so roll the fender. Heck, notch the frame. No wait, tub that bitch.

Personally I think there is no need for a tire wide enough that requires the fender to be rolled. I just don't like the looks unless it's on a wagon

How much tire you planning on trying to stuff in there? I've run a my 28x9 slick without mods. How much more "traction" will you be needing?

The title is restoration, that car came from the factory with a 215/65-15 Goodyear on it

Post by: RightyTighty on May 31 2017, 10:32:11 PM
Why what steve? Seeking Garys opinion? He's anal when it comes to stuff like rolling fenders. Why am I restoring the top half. Because I want to surprise nosey people. Why do I want want to roll my fenders. Because I like running 275's.

I planning on going back to Cooper Cobra rwl. 225 in front 275 in back. Tub....hell naw  I'd cry. I'm having a hard enough time trying to pull the trigger on rolling the fenders. Frame notch may maybe maybe in maybe in the future, imho, it makes the car better if done properly.

Was referring to fender rolling. Should not be needed unless you run wheels with the wrong offset
Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: TexasT on May 31 2017, 10:37:07 PM
Put on a 255/60-15. They fit well and don't need the fenders rolled.
Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: RightyTighty on June 01 2017, 03:27:18 AM
I have ten inch wide stock style rims on the back. Can't remember the offset.. 275/50r15 MT drag radials are cut up and fender trim is is a little distorted where you'd roll the fender. I really think the trim is too wide because it does stick out an eighth inch (or so) past the fender lip.

I've never had 275/60 Coopers back there. 255s are an idea I didn't know they made that size. I'm thinking the 275/60 coopers would be a tighter fit needing to roll.

Post by: TexasT on June 01 2017, 07:26:50 AM
I ran em in the stock 7"wheels. Not sure with a 10" wheel. That trim might need a "haircut".

LOL - so the 345s work for you, eh?  I cannot wait to put 390s on the back of the Monte. ;)

Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: Steve Wood on June 01 2017, 11:25:23 AM
I doubt it matters much on car value, but, like Jason, I prefer non rolled.

From a traction standpoint going down the strip, the length of the tire foot print is more significant than the width of the footprint at the same sidewall height when comparing adjacent tire sizes in many cases.  That's the reason we see a lot of guys with 255 drag radials pulling such good short times.  They also mph better.

I think most of us go for 275s for looks because we think they make the car look badazz.  Okay, to a certain degree, they do!  LOL

If I were to do it today, I would go for 255's, I think.

In your case, with 10" wheels, you probably need to go 275's to get the tire to fit to the wheel width.  10" wheels may be a bit over the tire specs but Cooper does not seem to offer much guidance.  Nitto shows 9.5" max for their drag radials.  That means rolling the lips.

Otherwise, you need 8" wheels and your choice of 275's or 255's.

You"re kinda in no man's land.  typical hot rodding.

Steve, if we wanted cars for their mechanical (just enough) perfection we'd all be rocking Miatas. ;)

Muscle cars are about needless excess and drastic over-compensation. :D

Title: Re: Restoration

Yes, always roll them or cut them out and weld in a 1/8" rod along the seams.

Pardon the pre-Summer tangent.

Great info guys thank you. I'm still unsure what I'm going to do now since new ideas came about. I'm leaning to the side that it will be ok to roll the fenders (gulp). I like 'em fat back there. I'm not going to do much drag racing so I'm thinking a wider footprint is fine. Ahh, can't wait to go back to rwl coopers.

Keep opinions comming.....

Everything you ever wanted to know about tires/rims for our cars...and you don't need to roll the fender lips. Any further questions, ask. I've run everything.

I run 295 Cobras with non rolled lips.   They do kiss the outside tread area when doing my Dukes of Hazzard impression.
Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: RightyTighty on June 02 2017, 10:24:59 AM
Thank you scoobum. I think I'm settling on buying some 8 inch rims with four inch back spacing. I can't remember so I don't want to say but I believe the backspacing on the 10 inch rims was 4.5.

Looks like cooper has expanded their cobra tire line. I swear they only sold 225 and 245 back in the day. Earl says 295? Damn son!

If i trim Trim the trim it looks like I won't have a problem with 275 coopers on an 8" rim. Soon I'll be measuring the BS on my current rims. Like I said, I think it's 4.5, that could be my whole problem.
Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: Steve Wood on June 02 2017, 10:50:10 AM
it's some what dependent upon the particular tire (all brands do not have the same dimensions for the same tires), but I have generally been able to run 275's on 8" 4" b.s. wheels without any rolling/triming
Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: RightyTighty on June 02 2017, 11:07:10 AM
Thanks Steve for making me feel even better about my direction.

275/60r15 on 8" rims with 4" backspacing for the rear.

I should be golden.

Title: Re: Restoration
Post by: Steve Wood on June 03 2017, 10:17:07 AM
I have two types of Centerlines on my cars.  the first pair I bought were Autodrag IIIs that i put on the back of my GN.  The second were a mag style (think they were from the Centerline Legend series) that I put four on my son's T.  I put 7's on the front and 8's on the rear.

Centerline catalog seems to be down online at the moment.  Here's a link to Summit of the aluminum wheels they have that fit the criteria.  They list only one type of centerline but Centerline has more.      https://www.summitracing.com/oh/search/part-type/wheels/wheel-material/aluminum?N=4294920795%2B4294920825%2B4294920837%2B4294947557%2B4294920860%2B4294920367&SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending&retaillocation=oh (https://www.summitracing.com/oh/search/part-type/wheels/wheel-material/aluminum?N=4294920795%2B4294920825%2B4294920837%2B4294947557%2B4294920860%2B4294920367&SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending&retaillocation=oh)

Brad, Judging by the part number shown (CCIGBPGNAL158), I'd say yes they are the exact same wheel that gbody parts is offering.
I would guess that the GBP in the above part number would probably stand for GBodyParts. If you go to Brian's website he gives a little info on these wheels and the fact that they are made by CCI (which coincidentally these letters are also contained in the part number on Highway Stars website).  So who knows if Brian is supplying these directly to Highway Stars & other vendors or if others vendors are buying directly from CCI (the wheel mfg).

My 295 Cobras are damn near the exact width as my old 275 radial T/A's.  The tread itself is a lot wider but the actual tire width is the same.  I'm running factory wheels that were widened and given an extra 1/4BS over stock with alum drums.  I've never verified the BS but if Jim did what I asked for the centerline of my rim should have moved outward 1/4" plus the extra 1/8" for the drums totaling 3/8" to the outside.

...just a hair under 2.5 beer can's per tire.(https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10450628_10203696484474645_3911699734562803378_n.jpg?oh=5a4b04e437d35c149837b7d986510475&oe=59E977FE)

I just think the reverse mount deep dish turbine wheels look great.  After all, there is still a chance that the Monte could have a turbo V6 in it (an LFX).  But, yes a black Monte Carlo with GN wheels just adds to the confusion.
