The Friday before I left to go to Cruising the Coast I took the car for a ride, everything seemed good until I nailed it after turning a curve and the car backfired, I got out of it and headed home, started checking the scan master and seen the Voltage was under 12v. so I was figuring that was the problem, started testing battery and ALT. . the Alt would drop voltage after running awhile. cold starts it was at 14+,
I tried to get a replacement from Oreilly but it didnt arive in time so I took my chances and headed to CTC. Everything worked great on the way there. The next day just cruising around the Volts started dropping. One of my friends from MISS. had a ALT. he could not use with his setup, so he sold it to me, later that night we changed it out, steady 13.9-14 volts. so we are good. This past Saturday night I leave a car show ( Got a peoples choice award  ) , I got into the gas and the sum bitch backfires on me again, volts were 13.9 , so maybe I have some other problem. I havent had time to check over anything yet. Just posting for any ideas for when I do have time to check. Thanks.

How old is your coil pack? I just went through the exact issue you have a few weeks back and I ohm'd the coil pack. Readings were way high. Replaced it and with a set of NGK's and it pulls like a freight train.
-
X2...that's the first thing I would check
-
Its prob 5-6 years old, I have spare here that I will try , thanks

I might have to go to Baton Rouge next week, I have a http://www.casperselectronics.com/store2/product_info.php?products_id=607 (http://www.casperselectronics.com/store2/product_info.php?products_id=607) I can bring with me if you want to try it out.

just ohm across the coil packs and see if the resistance is 11-13k on each one

Gordy
I would not want you to go thru the trouble. I will OHM this one , and like i said I do have a spare. Thanks anyway.

finally got a chance to do some work on the car, first thing I changed was the coil pack, started the car after and all seemed well there was no more lights blinking and fuel pressure gauge flickering. so I am assuming the other pack was bad even with it OHMing out at 11k.
Question - the car had back fired three times and I am just wondering what kinda damage it could had caused, It seems like I have a ticking noise on the passenger side and cannot tell if its an exhaust leak or lifter/rocker noise. also seem like I would be having crank case pressure because I have more oil coming from valve cover breathers and even some coming out of the valve cover bolts. car is not smoking, just bleeding oil more.

I have 3 good used coil packs...and I never ohm'd them. How do I know their good? Cuz I took 'em down the track...and the car pulled like a freight train. Same goes for the 3 spare ignition modules I have. :) If they survive in high gear under load at WOT through the traps...then they get a passing grade from me. :)
Keith...how long has the crankcase been pressurizing?

about 100 miles ago, after 2nd backfire i quess

I reread your post. You say you have MORE oil coming out the breathers. Have you always had SOME seepage from the breathers? I'd do a compression or leak down test. Any idea what the piston to wall clearance and rings gaps were set too?
-
leak down would be my suggestion as well. broken ring?
-
yes there has always been some oil coming from the breathers, I guess I could call Weber to find out the clearances. I put in my request for a leak down tester for X-mas.
-
Keith, I have a leak down tester you can borrow.
I'll meet you in baton rouge if you want to use it

Keith, I've never had a drop of oil come out the breathers in the two engines Joe has built for me. I'll hit Joe up for what brand he uses for rings and the ring gaps he uses.

well I didn't check the engine yet, but I did take it to the track for the last day of TNT of the year. I had to see how the new rear would do.
:( Three passes and spun on all , 1.87 60ft 11.67 @ 119 was the best. I was not expecting to get 10s, but I was hoping to at least still be able to cut some 1.5 60s. time for slicks.

Looks like she made up for spinning the tires at the big end! You get a hold of the tire spinning and you got 10's all day!

I like the MPH. :)
