Title: front brakes
Post by: Shimy87 on July 07 2015, 04:55:17 PM
I'm considering doing the front brake swap with the Blazer/S-10 switch. My brakes are kinda spongey now even though I have bled them a couple times and the pads/rotors only have about 10,000 miles on them. I have also converted them to vacuum with new booster. My question is, is it worth the effort? I don't want to go to the expense and effort to have the same soft pedal feeling. I don't get good brakes until I have used about half the pedal travel.

Brake pedal should be firm...not spongey. I'd say you still have air in the lines.

x2 if they are spongy, you either have air in the lines or some old hoses that need replaced that are expanding when you push the pedal.

My hydroboost conversion is easily the best mod I ever did to my car. When I push the pedal, we have stop, like right now. Im running stock rotors/calipers. It is night and day from the powermaster.

Try changing the hoses first.

I've done the s10 swap and then some with b body stuff with Charlie. Vacuum and s10 swap was the best combo for me.  Haven't done the hydro boost swap as I'm happy with what I got.  It's all up to your preference.

Swap to the 3 SS Russell brake lines and watch how firm the pedal gets. :)

I believe I got mine from Summit. These are for a 1987 Monte SS...should be the same as ours.

The one on the rear is a pain in the ass. You'll need a crows foot to remove/replace it.

Russell part number 692100 and I got them off amazon on sale. The look just like the factory lines but are made out of stainless wrapped teflon hose. Very nice product that will help the braking.

Bleed the brakes thoroughly. I do the RR, LR, RF and LF...in that order.

Use a crows foot line wrench otherwise you'll probably strip it

Well got the new lines in and bled brakes. All is well, firm pedal, but I hate the inch and a half of pedal travel before the brakes hit. Is there a way to get rid of that? Was thinking of making a stop that would hit the pedal arm just above where the brakes apply and then adjust the brake light switch?

Any suggestions?

There's another switch that uses the brake pedal and it tells the computer that's it ok to lock and then unlock the torque converter when the brake pedal is depressed.

its not the same switch as the brake light? I don't remember a second switch from when I did the vacuum conversion?

I'm pretty sure there are two switches

I'm not 100, 100, 100% sure but I'm almost positive that brake and TCC are the same switch and cruise control is  separate switch.

I bought a new brake light switch for my car recently and the cruise and light switch was the same piece.
If you check out rock-autos website you can look at the different switches.

But then they have a switch that says brake light switch and TCC without cruise, so

Did you end up reusing the old pedal or switching to a vacuum pedal when you did the swap?
last are rear shoes and drums adjusted up nice?

Used vacuum pedal when switched, I adjusted the rear shoes up and that helped ALOT, took a lot of the free play out of pedal travel.......I can live with it as is now

Thanks a lot guys!
