Title: Help with New Stock Turbo Replacement
Post by: jptv6 on April 16 2015, 09:27:05 AM
Hi Everyone new to this site , looking for some advice on a stock turbo replacement . have a stock gn with 60 lb injectors and turbotweak, stock downpipe, stock converter and hooker exhaust. No plans to change the stock setup but would like more hp and flow but then need to deal with slow spool up etc with stock converter , I know I can rebuild it but would prefer a complete new unit , although don't mind the stock exhaust elbow,  Advice greatly appreciated , Thank You

Ta49. Great with the rest of your stock stuff and 60# injectors. Just need the tt chip updates for the turbo.

Agree with Rich.  TA49.  Nothing wrong with the stock elbow.  Port the wastegate hole, get an RJC boost controller, adjustable HD wastegate actuator and you'll be tearing up the streets

Don't expect a noticiable improvement in performance unless you increase the boost beyond 17-18 psi

I had no idea a stock converter caused slow spool up with a stock (ish) turbo.

Thank You for your input on going with the te44 for a ideal stock turbo replacement.

I wonder now if I should be looking at the bigger picture and moving it up a notch or 2  up the performance
curve,  therefore next best option for better than stock turbo  even if it means a upgrading  converter ,,, open to your opinions please , Thank You Again

a 44 or 49 in combination with the right parts such as alky injection, primarily, is capable of running into the elevens in the 1/4 mile.

Instead of us guessing, why don't you tell us what you want for performance?  :)

The 44, 49 or the 5857 will get the job done. Unless you're willing to put the boost to it...as Steve says...you won't see much gain. Crank it up to 25-26 with alky or race gas...port the elbow...and things will start happening.

Speed comes at a cost. Hit that HP level at 25-26 PSI...and the transmission will start slipping. You'll need a fuel system that's up to snuff. There's no free lunch with these cars.

Nothing wrong with a 49/44 with a stock converter, as long as it the correct D5 converter. Just be sure to use the .63 Garrett housing for the quickest spool.

With an unopen motor and TE-44, stock intercooler and stock converter I ran a best of 1.61 60ft.
