This cam has about 5000 miles on it, there appears to be a pit in the metal a couple thou deep. it looks like it skipped over something there are breaks in the wear pattern.
The roller on the lifter looks goods.

I dropped it at the Machinist he was of the opinion run it, he is going to check it for straightness and polish all the journals and lobes.
-
It looks like one of Comp's low quality cores... and if so it isn't surprising that this damaged occured as the case-hardening doesn't go too deep on those.
-
who else makes an off the shelf roller cam for our cars?
-
Not sure. I do know that I would go to Cam Motion for any roller cam these days, although a Buick V6 grind would be custom from them. Shelf grinds are very dangerous for the reason shown above.
-
that's what I figured...
-
Not sure who makes them but fullthrottle sells roller cams. The one that has peaked my interest is the 210/215
-
I agree with the machinist

This should help explain the differences in quality available in aftermarket roller cams: http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1759417-new-cam-core-comp.html (http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1759417-new-cam-core-comp.html)

Polish it and call it a day.
-
I agree with everybody else, but, what oil and filter are you using?
-
Wix filter and GTX with a bottle of Lucas.
-
20 bucks and it looks brand new!
-
Larry...let me know what lifters you go with...and how you like them. I have all the parts together to build my 'retirement' engine...but I'm on the fence with which brand of lifter to go with.

These are morels I purchased cam lifters pushrods chain and springs from Webber a couple years ago and installed it in the motor I had in the car. Great guys to deal with IMO.
I have seen some of the issues guys have had with these lifters and the roller shaft. Mine still appear tight and from what I have read the new ones have a snap ring to ensure the shaft stays in place. They not loud but you can hear them mostly inside the car when rolling to a stop.
Bottom line if I did it again I would use the Morels and probably Webber again.
