Title: Parts shopping
Post by: Recklessrob on March 21 2006, 12:51:25 PM
I've been shopping around for my engine build up.
The list includes:
Forged std stroke crank.
Forged connecting rods
SFI flexplate
SFI harmonic Balance

Has anyone priced any of this stuff ? Where did you find the best prices ?

Hmm... do a search on the CAT cranks at TBs. I want to say they're about $300. Rods, I'd say shot peen and polish the stock ones, ARP bolts. Flexplate and balancer, I don't know.
Title: Re: Parts shopping
Post by: Recklessrob on March 22 2006, 12:47:16 AM
I found A crank and rods at fullthrottle. Crank
was $379 Rods were $439 The crank requires
Internal balancing, so you need a special harmonic
balance and flexplate, or modify the stock ones.
I found external flexplates at TA Perf for $206,
but their harmonic balancers were like $470 ! :bigeyes;
I think Postons sell harmonic balancers for $350 ish,
but I can't find my catalog right now.
I'm also lookin' for a good deal on 65# or larger high imp.
injectors. I'll look into the CAT crank though. Thanks.

That worked. I found the CAT crank on eBay for $299+$39 for shipping.
The same seller also sells rods, so I asked if he sells Buick rods too.

Definatly upgrade the rods. I saw pics of what stock rods can do to the block if they break. Dont forget to call Nick for prices as an option.

I found that. I also checked with the guy on eBay who sells the cranks, and
he's supposed to have the rods in June. He currently sells the Ford and Chevy
rods for $265 a set shipped ! My boss is looking into becoming a distributor
for them. So, I'll see what happens there. I like dealing with Mike L, so
I'll most likely buy the rods from him in order to have my engine in this Spring
rather than waiting.

I got them from fullthrottle. Very nice people
to deal with. Mike did well on pricing.
He matched the eBay crank price and shipping.
I paid the listed $439 for the rods, and he
did the 115% deal on the flow matched injectors
with Racetronix's price.

Now I just have to wait for stuff to show up !
I got part of my Kirban order today. I'm still
waiting on the brace and fuel pressure regulator.

I ordered some more parts today.
Braided oil cooler lines
braided turbo feed line and
braided drain pipe. I got everything
from John's Performance. So far, I'm
very impressed with the service. I placed
the order last night. John sent me an
e-mail informing me that he was out of stock on the
steel feed line, and gave me the option to delete it
from the order or upgrade to the braided hose.
I sent him a reply at lunch time, and received
a tracking number when I checked my e-mail tonight.

did you clearance the shaft pedistals yet? I wish someone told me to do this while I had the heads off. I am nervous about chips in my new engine. oh well, where are you at on your build? shortblock together yet?

Maybe Nick should learn to respond to emails. There's too many other vendors that can give great service and know how to communicate.

I've never had a problem communicating with Nick. Maybe he responded and RRs email dumped it to the junk folder? Maybe it was overlooked? Maybe Nick dosnt want to bother with selling parts? Who knows?

I wouldnt just pass it off because you know how communicating through emails can be.

Maybe spending $20 more to buy from a vendor who has excellent communicating skills is worth it. But if you arnt going to need tech after the sale, is the $20 worth worrying about communication?

Post by: Recklessrob on February 27 2007, 08:24:01 PM
I put the crank in last week, but thats as far as I got.
As for rockers, I'm looking at 1.6 ratio.
I bought a few more things from Jack Cotton this past weekend.
RJC deep oil pan
Cometic head gaskets
HR Parts motor mounts
and an aluminum MAF pipe
As for clearancing the pedestals, I think that only applies
to certain manufacturers and designs.
I haven't called anyone on the rockers yet.

Depending on which valve springs are used,
sometimes the underside of the rocker itself has to be clearanced to clear the spring retainer. You shouldn't have a problem with that. I don't want to go to 1.65 ratio
because sometimes those create another clearance issue with the pushrods and the head. I could open that area up more, but I'd rather not.

They come with a little sticker you put on them, kinda like a foil official sticker. But they dont put them on the flexplate cuz they fall off so there on a piece of paper that you show the tech people. But since there different than stockers than they could tell.

I got a precision plenum and accufab 70mm TB last week.
I did a little work on the plenum. I still have to transfer the pics

Title: Re: Parts shopping
Post by: Recklessrob on February 06 2008, 12:42:50 PM
I was originally going to get a 3.5", but the ones they have are aluminized steel.
Aluminized parts don't last very long here in New England due to all the salt.
I don't typically drive my cah in the Winter, but I want it to last too. I was also
concerned that a 3.5" may have clearance issues since I'm running HR puff'n'stuff
mounts with 20 year old body bushings. Also most say there isn't any benefit
from a 3.5" until you're running a 70+ turbo.

I was at Cotton's when that whole idea was proposed. I signed up while I was there.
I'm still planning on having the engine in this Spring, but don't know excatly when. There is alot of stuff going on here right now that has to be dealt with first.

Plus I still don't have a throttle lever, return springs etc... for the new TB.

Rob,

What size turbo have you decided (or not decided) on? What is you goal for ET? My turbo and TC are still in the box. Some of the new BB sruff looks pretty good and you won't need to go crazy on the stall.

Try the Goodyear Drag Radials. I would also suggest Bogart Wheels.

I have MTs and love them, but I got them before I went to work for Goodyear.I am not even sure if Goodyear had released their Drag Radial at that time. My next set will be the Goodyear Eagle S/S.

The new engine is in the cah. Now I'm working on making all those bolt on parts actually fit. (Ie: movig fuel return and vapor lines that the down pipe touches, cutting the pass side inner fender to get it away from the down pipe, modifying the pinchweld between the floor pan and the firewall to make room for the down pipe, waiting for header wrap for the down pipe, Adapting a '95 S-10 A/C compressor,
realizing that I had gotten the wrong reciever dryer for the A/C, Waiting for
pullies, waiting for turbo filter system, shortening bolts that come with RJC valve cover spacers, making special stud bolts for use with valve cover spacers, insulating
starter wiring so it doesn't burn on TA crossover pipe, etc...)
Title: Re: Parts shopping

Well all the parts that I ordered all showed up at once - today.

RJC sent me plain aluminum pullies instead of the black ones that I requested.
Just left Jason a voice mail. Now I have to wait for him to call back.

Update:
Got it running Wed night.
Retorqued the head gaskets Thursday night (None of the studs lost any torque
so that ended up being an unnecessary pain in the ass) Drove it around for
the first time with the new engine.
Friday, I drove it to work and aorund at lunchtime. Friday night I got the A/C
working for the first time since I've owned it.
Saturday I raced it.

It was a slow day at work yesterday, so I went home and got the GN.
I went back to work and installed an HR rear transmission mount. I
also fixed the deteriorated rubber exhaust hanger while I was there.
This weekend I had to modify the right front frame brace to clear the
intercooler. Brought it home to paint it, and put it back on yesterday
as well. Then I got ambitious and installed some of the missing body
bushings along with new bolts.
