Title: My new 1986 GN T-Top build up.
Post by: TURBOPOWERED68 on March 17 2013, 09:25:11 PM
Figured id start a new thread just about the car.
1986 GN T-Top
The car is complete and it runs.
It has a few mods.
This is the previous owners list
Quote
TE-44, K&N cold air kit, 3"THDP w/dump, Alky kit(alkycontrol), TT Alky chip, 42lb injectors, ATR Double Pumper w/ hotwire kit, Accufab adjustable fuel pressure regulator, Powerlogger, and Scanmaster. .

I plan on verifying the condition or everything and then getting started on the serious stuff.

the serious stuff
T-Top car So yes the T-Tops leak.
For those who don't know the water travels inside the A-pillars and onto the floor boards.
So the scope of work is the replace the front section of the T roof look into the A-pillars on how bad they are and replace thinned out floor pans.
the drivers door is also shot.

The good news is that looks like the only mayor things that the car has.

the interior is over all pretty good.
the driver seat needs to be recovered with new lower padding.

the other stuff that the car needs is regular wear items. The suspension is shot. the brakes feel pretty damn good.
Engine and trans felt good

please bear with me on this thing as i will jump around on "things to do list"
easy, hard, $$$$ and help will dictate the pace.

The parts fishing was already started and in between that i will do some of the easy stuff to keep things moving.
the gauges in the radio slot are at the top of the list. i NEED a radio in a car.

May as well run a compression check on it...and see if the cylinders are even.

Thats all going to get done.
But If the engine and trans are numbers matching they will get pulled and stored. As i don't want my dumbness and rookieness  :icon_confused: to blow it up.

Always good to have a spare engine (or four) with these cars.  An understanding wife is also a good thing.   :)

quick touch on the wife topic.
Mines changes my tires at the track.
We have been talking about cars this whole week
Any ways i tell her that, I was thinking about keeping both cars V6 powered.
Her response was Will your car be faster than XYZ's car?  i said noway.
She then replies -- NO, You have to build the Turbo LS for your car and worst case scenario me and you can bracket race each other.

I thought that it was going to be easy to get going on this car since i had one before and a full transplant on my Monte, but today i opened the hood and i was like "duhhhh"
Anyway
First things first
That big relay on the right side (driver side) gets pulled and dumped with NO other action right?
thats the one that turns on the engine cooling fan and kills the battery wile the car is off.

Also the turbo has a precision exhaust housing, If i remember correctly an OE garret housing would help in the spool-up department.

good question, i am going to put plates on this thing this week and test it out a zero psi to see how it does, i know its not an accurate test but it should be ballparkish.

trying to decide on which gauge holder to use

Evils 4 gauge holder across the top of the radio
or
GNS 3 gauge holder that sits above the radio but goes up and down next to the cluster pad

I tossed the radio in favour of the 3 gauge plate from TR Custom Auto Parts and the 2 gauge holder that sits in the console.

I like my tunes, so I would go with the second one because it doesn't block the vents.

I tossed the radio in favour of the 3 gauge plate from TR Custom Auto Parts and the 2 gauge holder that sits in the console.

The car came with a home made 3 gauge holder in the radio's spot.
But i NEED a radio.
I have been leaning towards the 2nd one because it will put the boost gauge higher into the line of sight.

BUT

I also like the first one since all i want is 4 gauges.
Title: Re: My new 1986 GN T-Top build up.
Post by: TURBOPOWERED68 on March 01 2014, 10:42:21 AM
Also the 4 gauge holder covers the bottom of the AC vent but i think (first mistake) that you could still get some air from the top half.
With the 3 gauge holder even if you turn the AC vent towards you it will block all of the air coming off of that first vent. I think

The 4 gauge pod is angled lower at the back…….Although the 1st picture (showing 4 gauge pod on radio surround) doesn't show it from the front angle the shot was taken.  It only blocks off the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the vent at best.  Still allows for a decent amount of air / ventilation to be able to move thru the vents.

Hey Dave,

I've got one installed in my car but don't know the dimension. My car is still in storage 45minutes away or I'd run out & measure it for you.
Can you eyeball it up using the attached picture. Appears to be pretty much the full depth of the radio surround.

Bill (More_Boost) on the turbobuicks board (or BadAssGN) on the other board has one that I don't think he has installed yet.
Maybe contact him to see if he can measure it up for you?

Or, you can contact EVIL on the other board who is the guy making the 4 gauge pod units.

Froze my butt off today but got somethings done.
I drilled and tapped the holes for the F-body brackets on one spindle.
I managed to cut the friction section on one rotor and got about half way on the other one before my ONE day old $14.00 angle grinder took a shit, Drove to Harbor Junk and got a replacement.
the discs aren't as bad as i thought they would be only used one disc

And yes first i started drilling it but then i smartened up a little bit.lol

I am going to stop my cheapness and pay the machine shop to finish them off. Hopefully it will be a lot cheaper than the $50.00 Each that they asked for to do the complete job.
The other one is done.
And both spindles are done.
Just need brake hose to go from G-Body to 02 F-Body

If anyone has info on which hoses to use PLEASE post it up.
Thanks

We used the brake lathe at work to turn the hub down to the final OD when were building up my setup.  Another option if the machine shop asks for too much money.

with the exception of the 2 gauge pod that goes in the console, I've just never seen any other gauge holder I've liked for a street car that looks decent in the buick interior.  dash and pillar pods just don't fit, imo.
best way to go I think is the gnx style dash cluster.
just my 2cent

Not long, all i have done is let run until the fan cycles once a month every month for the last few years.

I have seriously lost interest in cars since the day i got my 2 wheeled bitch, and now that the 2 wheeled bitch is running great -- What car??????

the one thing i can't seem to stop doing is buying parts for the cars, yes the brown truck is still delivering parts to my house for cars that i haven't touched in months. what the fuck is wrong with me?????

My current main issue is the exhaust, I have a SS -3 in DP and my local shop doesn't weld in SS. So I have to line up the DP to the rest of the exhaust mark it then remove it and have the V- band clamp welded to the DP , and the other part of the v- band to the intermediate pipe.

I also have to install new motor mounts and trying to decide between OE replacements and HRs   the main reason for the motor mounts Is that I think that the engine is sitting too low and thats why the OE intercooler is sitting on the sway bar.
