Title: Talked to Ed
Post by: Steve Wood on October 31 2012, 10:13:34 PM
He got out relatively okay...

he lives about 200 ft from the beach in Long Island in an old house built like a fort in the early 1900's.

He took a bunch of 2x6's and built ramps in his garage and got his cars up off the ground.  Said the water came to within a 1/2" of the bottom of the doors but did not get into the inside so he came out well there.  He had picked most stuff up so he did not have too much damage there.

In the house, he had moved most stuff of value up out of the basement except for some furniture.  He turned off power, gas, etc.  The flood pressure overcame the sewerage system and the water came up out of the toilet.  He rigged a pump but eventually it could not keep up and water was about 30" deep in the basement so the hot water heater, furniture, sheetrock, etc.  are toast but the house was dry above this.

he said he say several cars floating past the house and most of the power transmission poles are broken off on the main lines so it will be quite some time before power is restored on the island.

He got off the Island today and is temporarily at his ex's place.  Phone service is very spotty at the moment.  He said Sprint lost 18 towers in NYC and is basically out of service.

Winds were up to 107 mph in spots and there are a lot of structures there that were completely flattened so the property damage is massive.  Some of his friends lost houses, business, cars, and everything else that could be damaged.

I'm sitting in my car stealing someones internet.  Long Beach looks like a war zone with National guard driving around in half-tracks. I'm staying in Brooklyn until it gets back to normal. It looks like it will take months but the suits say weeks. Biggest problem now is no gasoline. I can't finish pumping out the basement until I get gas for my generator.  Signal is fading and I will post some pics when I get better service.

Hope you did not lose too much either.  That was a nasty storm and it is hard to protect yourself from something like that.

I did much better than most in the area.  I'm on a higher point on the barrier island and I still got about 2 1/2 ft of water in the basement. I lost the boiler, hot water heater, gas and electric. Power and gas came back on last week so I came back to the house from staying in Brooklyn.  I hope this week I can get the contractor to gut and restore the basement.  The rest of the house was fine.  Dave thanks for the offer. I drove by your house a few days ago but you were out.

I still have no internet service or phone. I bought one of those cellular usb doggles for my laptop. It's slow and prepaid card go's fast. So my time on the PC is limited until I get real service back.

At home
my Basement 2 water heaters and two boilers and everything in the basement
30 inches of water on top of that in my first floor and lost everything in the apartment.

Lost my family DD 01 GTP (I loved that car). My Father In-law lost his 08 Exploder.

I saved my two work trucks and happy as heck that i did.

Thanks Dave. I have a contractor friend who ordered the hot water heater and boiler. Should be installed one day next week.  They should start ripping out the walls and floor Tues.  I went to Laundry Palace yesterday to do some laundry. This was my first time in 40 years I had to wash clothes with a money machine.  Many first timers there also.

Thanks for the offer.
The house is gutted and my brother is doing the mold remediation as he was working on his certification before this happened.
