Where can I find one of these?
-
is that the one that goes to the tranny mount?
-
Yes.
-
M233roller has refurbed ones for sale occasionally. If I wanted one, I would get one of his..
-
check Rock Auto and see if that is the one they are showing under exhaust bracket
-
Otherwise just cut it out of an old tire... the same way GM did it.

This too. That's what m233roller does, I think. uses SS bolts to attach to refurbished brackets.
-
Is that it on Rock Auto? Price is right
-
I don't think these are available anywhere - at least not Rock Auto. I checked, but I may be wrong.
Not even NOS4GN does.
-
the one on rock looked like the cat hanger to me...had ten in stock
I no longer remember what any of the others hangers on the stock system looked like, tho
Picture was way small for my old eye

I don't have one, I took the pic from TB.kom. m233roller is the one that sells them on there - I don't know if he still has any...
-
I dont use mine anymore but may have a NOS unit hanging in the shop & I'll make someone a deal if it's still there?
Reason I don't use mine is the Exhaust shop welded a bracket & rubber mount that goes to one bolt & I never installed the original again.
-
Even David's original would be a fine part, I'm running his orig Y pipe- its like mint.
-
I had the same problem of being ripped from aged, the replacement cost around $10.00 from AutoZone, couple of bolts and double nuts per bolts to secure. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/3A-Racing-Hang-it-all-tail-pipe-hanger-system/_/N-25vy?itemIdentifier=401067&_requestid=1367872 (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/3A-Racing-Hang-it-all-tail-pipe-hanger-system/_/N-25vy?itemIdentifier=401067&_requestid=1367872)

That looks just like the one that I just had...it was less than 6 months old. I'm trying to find one of the stock or close to stock, but I'll run by AZ and pick one of those up tomorrow in the interim just so I can get some logging done to see if that's what was causing my knock. Thanks for the link, it says there is one available for me locally so I'll see when I get there...lol.
-
If you want a really well made / high quality reproduction, then I'd suggest going with one of the stainless steel units.
I got mine from Brian @ GBody Parts when I first got the car. Trust me......it will be the last one you ever buy!
Have had it installed for over 5 yrs and no issues. It's fabricated out of stainless steel & is built like Fort Knox.
You will be happy with this one!
-
At one point Brian sold "stock appearing" rubber strap for about $15 with stainless hardware & I may also have that unit if I didn't sell it? I guess he uses those on the Stainless units?
-
Alright, probably a dumb question...
But I don't have a cat, my bracket is welded to my ATR exhaust. That's not going to be an issue if I buy someone's stock part, or buy one of those pieces from gbodyparts or m33roller (he is out of them by the way so it's a moot point).
I am kinda interested in getting that piece from gbodyparts minus the catylitic converter piece since it's already got a SS transmission mount with an HR parts poly tran mount. How big of a PITA is that piece to change out, because I know nothing is every easy on these damn cars...

Really, I think that's all need...plus the hardware.
-
Looks like all you need is a chunk of tire.

Yeah, I'd like one like I had originally...I bought one from Autozone to use in the interim but it's not has wide or thick as the original.
-
Hard to fathom how that piece only lasted 6 months considering we get 20yrs on the
original?
-
Once you change to a larger downpipe/aftermarket exhaust, I figure a couple of years can be pretty good
-
Now that you supply some pictures, I can see what you have, suggestion. :chin:
Is it possible to drill another hole next to the existing one; the bracket is mounted on the tranny, and then use double the AutoZone straps?
AutoZone has two type of straps, one of them is thin, but the other as I mention before is thicker and I did compare it to the original strap and it is a little thicker.
If you double strap and make sure when you bolt them to equal length it should be as good as original; but then again thats my opinion.
-
With the setup pictured - you could probably use a few large exhaust oring/hanger thingies too.
Maybe the failed one wasn't bolted tight enough? Looks like all the load and stress was on the top of the bolt.
Another Autozone unit with larger, thicker washers, tightened more may last a lot longer.
Just a random though...
-
use the thicker strip or two strips....some times when we change things up, we have to improvise to get what we want/need
-
I would also recommend larger, thicker washers. The will distribute the load much better, especially if tightened well and correctly.
-
I'd use a length of chain and some rubber washers (cut from old tires) as isolators at the brackets.
-
Well...I went to 3 or 4 "custom exhaust" places today to see if they had a piece like that or could fabricate one, no. Of course not, they order everything specific to each vehicle and when I asked what was "custom" about their exhausts they just looked at me like I was from outer space.
Gbody sold me just the strap and SS hardware for $28...and it's like the original, hopefully as thick or thicker; we'll see. Prefer one solid piece over multiple pieces and it lasted for 8 years (the original piece not the POS thinner one).
-
Well I got home and the strap from gbody is here...
It's nothing like the original (from the 1st post of this thread)...it's thinner, and you can literally pull on it and stretch it without too much effort. The hardware it came with is laughable, I'll go get some better stuff and try it for now.
-
Probably was the thin Autozone strap originally

The Autozone strap makes this thing look bad...
It does not take any effort at all to stretch out the gbody piece, it's crap...
-
Pretty sure no one is totally surprised....I suspect you can make a much better one...I would use Mark's suggestion and use larger washers to distribute the load/wear

Just for your info, I didn't used trick camera shots when I shown you the AZ strap in my previous thread, but the GDbody strap looks a little malnutrition compare to AZ strap: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/3A-Racing-Hang-it-all-tail-pipe-hanger-system/_/N-25vy?itemIdentifier=401067&_requestid=1367872 (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/3A-Racing-Hang-it-all-tail-pipe-hanger-system/_/N-25vy?itemIdentifier=401067&_requestid=1367872) :chin:

For $5 each at Autozone you can afford to change it every year. Probably cheaper if you by them by the dozen! :)
-
Another quality product by GBodyParts.com! :rolleyes;

Gordy - the blown out one looks almost melted..
Just a thought, but wouldn't a very rich condition cause the cat to get really hot?
-
The heat does seem weird since i've had a few 3" downpipes with dumps & Cats & mine lasted much longer than a season? They never melted but mine is a cruiser with some track days so maybe lots of driving in summer traffic might be a factor?

Well, remember...the re are two blown out ones.
The first one that went out was the double holed strap, the second one was the single (just like the one in this pic below). I don't have a cat, but I do believe you're right about the heat. I smelled what I thought was burning electrical wires moments before my KR sensor started blaring away whenever I gave it some gas over 45 or 50 MPH.

I bought one and put it on, they're only $2.99 here. I was really expecting the gbodyparts one to be made out of the same material or similar, I'm trying to think of something to compare it to...I'll have one of my kids take a pic of me stretching it out. It's like it's made of silly putty...I can't believe this is what they use on that really expensive hangar kit they sell.
-
I have a suggestion, according to your photo the tranny bracket that has the one bolt facing upward may be too close to the exhaust pipe. You might want to re-drill a new hole enough to use the last supported hole on the flat bar welded to the muffler. You can try to double up on the strap since you have enough space to mount them.
-
Gordy - he's got another one for sale - just posted.
