Title: Is the air box gasket still available?
Post by: tb3 on January 05 2012, 08:30:13 AM
Needing the big foamy type gasket that goes inbetween the fire wall and the air box.
anybody have a part #?
Is this still available?

also, is it just regular urethane sealer used for the top cover to bottom cover?
what did the factory use?
part number?

You are talking about the factory air box, right?

I doubt they are still available - the "foamy" one might be able to be replace with some hand cut closed cell foam.

I think the seal between the upper and lower is just a thick foam gasket.

the original seal between the top and the lower box was some kind of weatherstrippi ng.  I have always used a black silicone or a tube caulk.

I always let it sit for a bit until it is skinning over..say 20-30 minutes before screwing the top half on because silicone is an excellent glue and is no fun to try to separate later.

I've looked at gbody parts and nos4gn, no luck.
my gasket is still in pretty nice shape, no tears. I just figured go new if still available.

I'm going through my new used airbox right now to make sure everythings tip top.
the factory used some sort of urethane weather stripping.
I have no problem using black silicone for the halves, but I'd prefer to use some weather stripping with the firewall gasket.
I was told silicone draws moisture. course I don't guess that matters if the metal is painted well.
I  had some very minor surface corrosion along the top of the air box surface.
I've removed it and have the firewall in primer right now.  I plan on painting it when I get home tonight

3m probably makes it.  I'll check their site

See if you can find some elaphant (sp) shit. That's the nick name for it in the industry. It's an insulator used in A/C work and it's not very expensive.

If you want foamy with adhesive, truck cap tape works well. Trim to fit.
