A lot of photographers won't tell you their secrets, I think it's really because they're assholes. The camera is here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=369376&is=REG&addedTroughTyp e=search
sun dog, buy your wife one, she will love you forever. Buy 2, you guys can have fun together with shitty cameras.
The camera needs to be modified before you use it! They are plastic boxes of shit before you tweak them, but afterwards, they're lovely. I'll post up the directions to modify them later. If you buy them, buy film too. I use Ilford HP5, Kodak T-Max 400 is good. Any 400 speed, 120 size film is good really. But only in the daylight.
If you guys really want to know the tricks to it, I'll tell you. So simple it hurts.
-
$23.69 after shipping and mine is on it's way....I'll get at you about film and whatnot when it's in my hot little hands.

Thanks man great idea I have a b-day to buy for in Feb. I feel the same way on the trade secrets; I've found most people who know very little don't like to give up any info.
-
OK, now you guys have to find a place near you that develops 120 or as others call it, medium format film. I don't know of any one hour places that do it, usually I go to a favorite photo store (a cute girl works there, and I've only seen her there once. I will persevere!) and they ship it out and I get the film back a few days later.
I'll compile a list of films and situations to use them in.
-
I once had one of those "go in just to see her" type chicks at a pet store next door to me in Rockland, ME. One day a realized that I had like 20 Bettas and I should quit going there.
There are a lot of art fags in Santa Fe, plenty of specialty photo stuff.
-
You get it yet?
-
whats so special about it now??
-
Eat a bowl of chodes. It takes HUGE pictures, 4 times the size of a 35mm camera, costs $20 and everything looks old school. The color photos are just as wicked. It worthless as a real camera, but art photos are ridiculous, as it has features a $1,000 Hasselblad doesn't.
-
Well, I've been scopin' out things I'll shoot with it when it shows up. There's an awesome twisted Cottonwood up the road that's gonna look bad ass on my website.
-
I dont think anything can beat that shot you had of your car behind the tall grass, I love that picture its been my background for months now.

My yard kinda lends itself to cool pics....especi ally around dusk-ish.
-
I just got an email notifying me that the camera just shipped.

Ha ! Now you're "developing" a funny accent ! :rofl;

Do you think that something like this would be cool ?

I'm ordering one this week. Any add-ons (Filters, film, ect...) you recommend on the site. Your tweaking tricks would be much coveted.

Definitely! Look through the viewfinder, everything is backwards! It's a trip. It's supposed to take 620, which is no longer available. Go to a photo store and get a roll of 120 film and see if it fits, some do, some don't. You can re-spool the film, but it's a little work. If the 120 fits, or you don't mind re-spooling, it's a hell of a camera. Take it to a repair place for a CLA (clean, lube and adjust). If it's too much hassle for you, I'll be happy to take it off your hands.
-
Check!
-
I think I have another one kicking around here somewhere. I'll
post a pic if I find it. I also have either a Vivitar or a Kodak "disc" camera
somewhere.
-
God you guys are camera nerds, I took Photography 4 out of 4 years in high school and my teacher was really hot you guys would of really enjoyed that class :supz:

Any pics of your teacher ?
:pics: (nude ?) :rofl;
I may even have some pics that I took with a "pin hole" camera
made from a Quaker oat meal container back in Jr. High.
I also have a Ricoh 35mm SLR thats still my favorite. Every
now and then I look for different lenses for it. I've always wanted
a fisheye lense and a zoom substantially larger than 210mm.
But that stuff usually doesn't turn up inexpensive. Not to mention
almost non-existant for a Ricoh. If I had a Canon or a Nikon, they're everywhere.
-
You can score adapters! I want a medium format SLR, but they're pricey. Looks like I'll go Soviet, with a Kiev 60 or 88. I've always wanted to make a pinhole cam myself. One day I will. I'll keep an eye out for lenses. What model Ricoh? You might interchange with Pentax lenses...
-
Rob, as long as "wicked" is at the end of the sentence, it's not considered New Englandah. Natty can't crossover to that, it would be a wicked shame.

It's part of my retro-speak campaign in which I relive my wasted youth through talking like I did as a kid. Fuckin' harcore.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have most of those lenses. I'm looking for
the "weird stuff" !

Okay Brian- the camera showed up today....I see where you noted what kind of film I should get, but what do I have to do to "tweak" it so that I can get pics just like the ones you took in Vegas?
-
Aw shit, now I have to put effort into something. I'll get back to you all on this.
-
Natty, don't make me put on my whining hat.
-
Oh yeah... I'll have a definitive guide or two up tonight. I promise bitches.
-
So last night I end up getting spun and now I'm awake at 5am, a little buzzed still and needing to piss like a race horse. I have school in a couple hours, so I might as well stay awake. Anyway, here are some good links. Most are for the Holga 120S, you guys have the 120N, which is the same, but you have the bulb switch, and tripod socket and 60x60 gate from the factory.
Very good aperture mod:
http://www.geocities.com/markhahn2000/holga_mods.html
A better aperture mod and the close up focus mod. Also shows how you can get more film area out of your frames. I suggest cutting the 45x60 one, in case you fuck up:
http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/projects/holga/holgamod.html
Quick note: I popped off the small circle and superglued it to the back of the swing arm, and then sanded it down with an emory board. Same result, but a hell of a lot easier.
How to load 35mil film into a Holga. Don't buy anything from the site, by the way. Total ripoff:
http://shop.lomography.com/holga-backup/35.html
Check this site out a bit, it has good tips on many light leaks:
http://www.holgamods.com/leak/leak.html
This place is good. Click on Mods and Links. I HIGHLY suggest the velcro:
http://www.theverb.com/holga/mainfr.htm
This place is good for inspiration:
http://www.digitalsucks.com/
This guy is good too:
http://www.davidniles.com/holga/index.html
Happy Holga-ing. :atbeer:

One more thing, Ilford HP5 in the shit! Kodak T-Max 400 and Kodak Tri-X 400 are a little less forgiving. Those are good daylight films. If you're going to be indoors, try an 800 or even a 3200 speed film. If it's bright as shit outside, maybe use a 100 speed. And throw away your lens cap, trust me.
One more thing, on the back you'll see the red square, I cut a hole out of a piece of velcro and covered the hole so light doesn't leak through it. The velcro let's you peep the shot number while winding.
I'll let you in on some more tricks as you progress along...
-
Saturday morning I went to Kurt's Kamera Korral in Albuquerque and they had the B&W Kodak TX400. Spooling that crap into the camera was a PITA, but I got her loaded up, put some electrical tape over the little red window and went and killed the roll around Santa Fe County. If they're open late enough this evening I'm gonna drop off the film. After I see how these pics came out, I'll have a better idea of what to do with the rest of the film I bought. I'm pretty stoked to see them.
-
Sweet! Did you get 35mil or 120 film?
-
Sweet! Did you get 35mil or 120 film?
120.....I thought that was the good stuff? I saw the modding that you can do to run 35m in it, but I thought that the only real benefit to that would be having the image all the way to the edge of the frame....which is cool and I will end up trying it, but I'm really just attempting to get some pics that look similar to what you took in Vegas.
-
So... how did you know what frame you were on? Did you peel the tape?
-
So... how did you know what frame you were on? Did you peel the tape?
Yeah, I'd just peel it back slightly while winding to the next frame. It's cool to be taking pics like this for the type of project that I am because even if a pic turns out shitty, it's a "happy little art-accident", y'know? I even deliberately double exposed a coupla frames, taking a second identical pic after having moved the camera a hair's breadth. They say the developing turnaround on this film is 2 days....I can't wait. I've got three more rolls that I wanna burn through, but I've gotta wait and see how the first roll came out.
-
Yeah! That's how you do it!
-
Y'know, I've never been a big photographer-type guy, but on the rare occasion that I'm taking pics I really do have a lot of fun with it.
-
It's a toy camera! I love it! How could you not have fun? You had the camera set on N right? If it was on B your shit will be blurry.
-

"N or B"? I don't remember seeing that.....? It was set to the mountain icon 'cause I was taking somewhat distant photos and it was sunny out, so it was set to the sun icon....where the hell is N or B?
-
BTW, I'm taking all these pics because this will be the motif for the CD I'm having made. It's gonna look *SO* cool. I foresee a Mr. Brian Lynch noted in the "thank yous" for this shit. lol
-
Brian, wanted to let you know I got the Holga HO120CFN, color filters and holder, and 2 rolls of Ilford HP5. I left it unopened in the box for the wifes b-day on 2/4.
Can't wait to see what she says.
It's a great gift cuz I can use it whenever.
Thanks, you rule! :prayer:
-
No prob peeps! Sylvan, look on the bottom of the camera, near the tripod mount, you'll see another switch, marked N or B. N is normal shutter operation, 1/100 of a second. B is bulb mode, which leaves the shutter open as long as you hold the button down. The downside is unless you're on a tripod, it'll be blurry as all hell. But maybe it'll turn out good, you never know.
Sun Dog, get some rolls of this film for your wife while you can:

I took a look after I got home last night and found the N/B switch. Fortunately, it was on N the whole time.

Yes...very fortunate!
We want pics dammit!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you ask for prints or negatives?

Did you ask for prints or negatives?
Prints. And it was noted to "return regardless". I wouldn't know the first thing about what to do with negatives.
-
Good. You need a negative scanner to pull not getting prints. I finally sucked it up and scored one, WAY too much, but it's a hell of an investment, for what I'm doing at least.

I'm not sure if its MSpaint or one of the other programs I'm using,
but one of them has a negative option.
