Title: Block cooling holes
Post by: SuperSix on August 08 2011, 09:30:15 PM
I noticed these holes were almost 100% blocked by the head gasket - aren't these coolant passages?

I had already poked out the top two when I took this pic.

I always thought they were were coolant-steam holes? I made sure on my RJC gaskets not to fill them full of the roll on goop.

On my GM gaskets they are only 1/4". I think the main coolant in/out is at the end of the heads. I'd show the pics of mine torn apart but still haven't figured that out. How do you change the file size???

You can resize pics by percentage or pixel size in MS Paint. Are you running WIndows 7?

No, Vista

Not sure if that version of MSPaint will resize the pics - you can try.

Been trying to send pics. I'll keep working on it til I figure it out. If you Facebook, I put a gasket pic to start an album. Search Gary Schatz

Being so small makes me think they are steam holes. The end ones are the main water flow & these would be mostly for steam I think?

Partially right David. It has to have a way to get air out of the engine in areas higher than the rear cooling passages. That's why the holes are so small. No major flow in that area but it has to purge air out some where.

Yours kinda looks like mine. Little holes from the factory that went 117k.

Well, that's a well-blown gasket. :D
