Historically, has there

The basic stock location units from Known vendors like Cottons, PTE and few new guys out there will get you into the high 9's. Front mount's will take deeper. Usually a miss match combo of speed parts hold you back and not the intercooler

I would bet you on the gains left on the table.
The laws of thermodynamics state that gains grow increasingly smaller as the charge temp draws closer to ambient temp.

Yup, missed that.
Not slamming existing vendors or proven combos, just think the airflow can still be optimized further. Probably not a strictly bolt-on exercise, tho.

I suspect, realistically, realistically suspect?? oh, well, most of the design goes into stuffing the largest unit into the available space. I think people have figured out that low pressure drop is the most important facet.
In theory a slic should catch a lot less flow than a front mount...yet they perform virtually the same until one hits 700+ hp from what I see....the challenge would be to design smaller, not larger...but, when you spray alcohol, you take a lot of magic out of an intercooler anyway
we get caught up with bigger is better whether it is intercoolers, ics, downpipes, or turbos and ignore evidence to the contrary. Market hype is more prevalent that actual data.

Steve...to your knowledge...ha s there ever been a test done to compare the air charge tempersture between a FM and a stretched SLIC both spraying alky on the same car at the same boost level?
-
no....
