Title: Purple Martins
Post by: Steve Wood on March 01 2011, 03:16:34 PM
Took down the house and cleaned out the sparrow nests a week after the scouts arrrived.   Nothing like procrastinatio n.  I hope I did not piss them off as I really enjoy the four months of happy chatter they bring along with them.

Hope the rest show up soon before the sparrows start imposing squatter rights again.  Maybe I should inform the sparrows as to the availability of the Wisconsin capitol building?

The only birds I have around here on a regular basis is Muscovy ducks. I don't care for them at all. One has a huge nest with 13 eggs in it right outside my office window.

Nasty buggers

I must admit my ignorance as far as the names of birds go. But, those barnswallows (?) that make nests out of mud and spit and shit all over the porch are not my friends.

martins are a type of swallow.  One year, I spent sometime trying to convince those mud nest building swallows to not do it under my porch or in my shop...damn determined creatures.

Not much of a mosquito problem here with several Martin houses in the neighborhood but if there was a problem I'd put up one or two of these

I need to get that done too. It would be a good project for the future step-son and I.

Last coupla years we've been invaded by stink bugs. It's amazing the places they flatten themnselves into and don't squish. It's nothing to change a cabin air filter and have 2-3 in the pleats. Damn things.

Yep crazy weather. Snow just melted a few days ago and ant hills are popping up between the cracked cement. I blame Al Gore

I have issues with wasps. They love the eaves of my house, and my TR.

Bastards.

Little bastards cost me a couple of hundered dollars when I had to call a repairman because I couldn't get the furnace to light due to a nest in the chimney. Actually, *I* cost me by not thinking of that.

leave here. Too many "gourmet meals" on the roads, to leave.
LOTS of deer, possums, skunks, armadillos.... All gave it all to keep the scavengers alive! :D

dad likes purple martins.   he mounted a tall house for them in his back yard.
there was a good size hawk that would swoop in right over the top of the trees at super fast speed and grab one of them up right off the top of that bird house to devour, every couple days.
dad decided to sit on the back porch with the shot gun and wait.

hawk: 0
