Wrecked em is having "issues" with my GN. We are trying to figure out why it is not running right. When driving it sounds like the car wants to "Backfire" but does not backfire it stumbles and misses when under a load. Any info would be great! Thanks guys.

I am pretty sure that' normal. that's a mastic Motorola put in there to keep the wires from vibrating loose, moving etc.

Actually it WAS ok until I opened it up and one of the tabs on the coil broke off from the wire connected to it being stuck in the goo.
As a point of reference, the other unit I have is not melted. Maybe different materials since they are different colors.

I've cracked open a few and some had it, some didn't. As suggested in another thread - check all of your grounds too

Had the same problem with the GN years ago...scratchi ng my head for weeks until a friend recommended that I try the ignition module. I now keep two ign. mods and two coilpacks on hand at all times. I believe a new ign mod is about $89 at Autozone...? No wait, more like $129 I think...
-
I have a module but I will need a coil pack to go back on the 85. I borrowed the coil and module from it for now.

The $89 I think is for the coil pack...that was a few years ago, though.

Coil packs are 49 at autozone

Is that for a re-man? I swear I paid more than that.

Not sure how one would reman a coil pack.

i would not trust an autoparts store ignition module. i went through 5 or 6 of them and finaly ordered on strait from GM and finaly got my car running right. it had a similar problem cept when car was hot it would cut off and not start for 20 to 30 mins and repeat process every 3 or 4 miles.

Looks like they're carrying power bastards again...

I would stick with the AC Delco brand for ignition modules and coil packs. Those aftermarket ones do weird shit to a car. Somehow an off brand ignition module found it's way onto my car when it was in someone's "shop" and it caused havoc with my tachometer zeroing out at about 2K RPM.

You can always swap over to a type 2 coil/module setup from fwd 3800 vehicle.
-
given the high rate of bad perfroming type II's I would stay away from them. They only have one power feed rather than two which sometimes causes them to break up.
I would use a GM module, but, coils don't seem to be as particular.
If you ohm the old coil, it may be bad, but that module did not look too good to me....may have been the picture

The early ones 87-93 work great. Later units had troubles. I'm talking about the module not coils.
If one is installed with the proper plate and grounded, failures seem to vanish.
-
I think I will stick to the sure thing

How does one identify the vintage?
-
I think if it becomes an issue, i will just convert to a coil on plug system.
-
Put 25 miles on the car today. It has been way too long.

Order module delco 1946A or gm pn# 10456478
plate gm pn#10456478
coils are the same up to 2005 (I think) gm pn#10472401

Steve's site will tell you how to ohm them out. I have a coil pack/module tester and it's a handy dandy tool. It even helped diagnose and get a turbo-t back on the road on powertour this year. It was a good thing I had brought a spate ignition module with me because even the NAPA crew that follows the tour couldn't locate any nearby for the guy.
