Any suggestions on the first steps in making a GN into a road racer?
-
Yes, but only one: talk to Greg.
-
I don't wanna be lazy or one of those typical bulletin board snobs that say look in the older posts... BUT do a search under my user name at TBS.com and you should find quite a bit that I have written over the years over there.
If you have more specific questions I would be more than happy to answer. :cool;
I would start by upgrading the braking system. I don't know what improvements have been made in this area for the GN (I suspect not much) but at least get bigger rotors and then start picking off stuff as you go.
:cool;

oh no....... :yernuts: :club: :club: :club: :club:

That should be good enough for braking. Keeping in mind that you are not trying run in the Speed World Challenge Series but doing this for fun and because you some money you dont really need.
The power steering pump will need to be upgraded for sure. I burned up a couple of those.

Yes, that would help a bunch.

CRAP! There is one major thing I forgot to tell about setting up a GN to actually turn.
Find a friend who lives close by and remember cash is king. You don't want the Mrs. finding out about all the new parts you are getting. So send everything to your friends house and then work on the car over there. Tell Donna you are going over there to help him work on his car. His wofe wont care that you are working on your car over there just so long as her hubbys car is not the one getting the new goodies.
This is a win/win for all involved.

Having Greg back on this board is like a breath of spring air. Or a fire on christmas eve. Or maybe just breaking down and giving your herpes a good scratching.

CRAP!

The 87 will get the treatment, front frame rails are cleaned and half painted. It is coming together slowly. The 85 can be a driver, it has half the miles anyway. :yawinkle:
One more question, what turbo to use. I have a TA49 and a TA54. I am guessing the smaller turbo may work better as it will have less lag. Any ideas.
-
I had to look at the date and make sure this wasn't an old post from when Racer X used to post here.
Welcome back, you Mopar-lovin' bastard.

Oh, uh-huh, you think so?
-
If this post doesn't include you making him a sammich - I am disappoint.
-
The smaller faster spooling turbo is the way to go. You are faster on a road course when you can maintain momentum.
Donna, sell the GN and set yourself free!

I have been trying to tell him to sell it (mine). It is not like we do not have any GN's. I like my GN, but there is more to life and much other things I would like to do.
-
Yes there is more to life, like actually driving a carinstead of having a constantly broken one in the stable!
Sincerely,
Racer (now free to drive) X

I have read about a few brake upgrades that can be done inexpensively.
One is to use the steering knuckles and brake rotors from a Chevy Caprice. Using the knuckles is key because they improve the suspension geometry and also allow
you to use the larger Caprice rotors. The other is to get calipers for a Chevy S-10 (SS or X-treme) with the ZQ8 suspension package. They supposedly used a dual piston caliper. You may have to use the s-10 hoses as well. Aftermarket braided stainless are best. Use D.O.T. 4 brake fluid on the brake side of the master only, if using a powermaster. Do not use D.O.T. 5 under any circumstance as it will aerate in the event you are able to get it hot enough to boil.

After some research, I think I am going to go the LS1 F-body route. With the help of two brackets, which I can fab myself, it is all bolt on front and rear.

Oh yeah, and it all fits in the 16" GTA wheels. No need for the expense to go to 17" or 18" wheels.
I also found tires....

How is this project coming along?

Motorhead's tactful slant on the brake thing

You rang?!

How is this project coming along?
Real slow. I am hoping to have the car on the road this spring. The brakes are on hold for now. Maybe a summer project?
-
:rofl; Oh how I missed Motorhead Mike's vibrant discussions!
It takes a lot of patience and unfortunately money to do this correctly... Good luck Bryan! :cool;

Well, sold my Ranger yesterday, going to use this GN as a DD for a while.
-
I wish you the best of luck in that endeavor.
-
It will be nice to see my GN on the road again, especially with my new turbo in it. We may have to switch DD's a few times. :yawinkle:

Okay, he got your crate running, time to get that road racer going now. :supz:
