Just curious if anyone here is into it ?
-
No, but I know someone who is.
-
I listen in with my multi-ban scanner sometimes.
-
I would still like to know why they get special license plates...?!

The same way you got your vanity plate "ASSBNDT", they suck cock for it.
Zing!

My dad has an expert license. He has been into it since before I was around. I studied for the novice exam when I was a kid but never got around to taking the test.

They've changed many of the rules, including the dropping of the morse code requirement. There are currently 3 classes of licences. (Technician, General, and Extra) I have a friend here that had expressed an interest in getting his license so
I went out and bought a new radio. (Icom ID-880H 2m and 70cm dual band) It
also has a new feature called D-star that allows you to connect through a series of internet and 10ghz linked digital repeaters allowing nearly global access any time
of the day. If anyone here was licensed, I figured it would be cool to talk on the radio.

I won't tell you guys what Mark has to do to get web hosting for this board, but
you should be showing your gratitude by buying him strong drinks to kill the taste
in his mouth....

Brad Conely on the BPG website is a big HAM radio operator....yo u or I could ask him if you want...

WHY THE FUCK DO THEY GET SPECIAL LICENSE PLATES?!

Becuse they can.
You pay extra for them just like you would with any vanity plate. I don't
place my callsign on my vehicle in case I accidentally piss someone off
on the road. Because all they have to do is look your call up in a book or online to get your address. And that only leads to the practice of my other hobbies...

I understand military plates, antique vehicle plates, state government plates....but radio people? Hell, you'd think a killer skier would get special plates before radio lowlives. I'm writing my representative s and urging them to make "Not A Shoplifter" plates.
I've spent no small amout of time listening to the CB at truck stops and it seems to me that the only function of said devices is to try to hook up ass or tell "ni**er jokes" all annonymous-like.

Just 11 meter SSB. I'm not going to start out on VHF when I've QSL'ed with Austrailia, The Falkland Islands etc on HF. All with a 3 element yagi vertically polarized with a D104 and 40 watts.
Btw. I'm new to the board. But I recognize a few of yous guys. :)

I just sat in with my father on a contest - talked to a guy in Guam, and one in Hawaii, more across the US. Good stuff.

Another reason why there are Amateur Radio license plates is that during times of emergency ham radio operators volunteer to help local, state and federal authorities.
I've personally done this as well. During some severe weather I had to set up a road block where there were downed live electrical wires to prevent people from driving through. Sometimes there aren't enough Police and Firemen to cover. I would think that having amateur radio plates would signify ones staus as an emergency volunteer.
richie6, I had started off with 11 meters before I got licensed. There is nothing wrong with that and don't let the "holoier than thou" types try and degrade you for doing so. BTW, welcome to the board.
SuperSix, was that part of "Field Day" ?

Yes, it was. And my stepfather is training to help in case of emergency.
