Ok, question for you guys... My daughter who is 7 is very interested in guitar. She has been interested in it since 5. She wants an electric guitar for Christmas. :supz: She has no clue on how to play it, but next year she will be offered music lessons at school. My question is, should I just get a "basic" string guitar at Wally world or what??? I am not sure on what to get for her just to practice on until next year.
-
If you check some bigger music stores and online sites like sweetwater and musicians friend, you should be able to find a nice guitar thats scaled down for children or those with small hands.(IE: Fender telecaster j/k) I don't recommend
going too cheap otherwise the guitar you get may have to high of an action making it nearly unplayable for a beginner.
-
Yup, find a kid sized guitar. If you get an electric, get a really light gauge of strings on it. If you get an acoustic, get a nylon string Spanish style, WAY more forgiving than a steel string dreadnought.

I detest that. :mad;
-
Where we live, anything I get her will have to be online, the nearest place to go I think is near Memphis. Thanks for the input. :atbeer:
-
There's a Squire (Cheapy made by Fender) mini Strat available through musiciansfrien d.com that's pretty cheap. Search through their beginners packages and you'll no doubt find a guitar/small amp/gig bag dealy for about $150-ish.
-
Sounds good, thanks to all. Let me see what I can find her.
-
Is this what you guys are talking about????

lol, I asked her, but she said "No". I was surprised. But, that is fine with me.
-
The hello kitty guitar is a standard size neck.

Which means???????

I think standard is a fine way to start, but that's up to you.
Donna, MAKE SURE not to buy anything with a polychromatic arpeggiator a phrygian inversion device!

She's just starting out, so I don't think that'll be a problem. Also stay away from Lydian Tuno-matic bridges. A standard bridge will work just fine.

Rob, I worry that her daughter will develop a carpal-tunnel like microcardial synapse infarction.
-
Oh god, I am going to need a Cigarette..... .and I dont even smoke!!!!!! lol

Rob, I worry that her daughter will develop a carpal-tunnel like microcardial synapse infarction.
Not at 5 years old she won't. That takes years to develop.

You're dead wrong, Rob. It's caused by synaptic nerve issues that arise from accelerated motion of the fourth phalange of each finger. Hah!

Wait until she gets into heavy metal and starts ditching school and acting erratically. Or am I the only one who's life fell apart after guitar playing? LOL

Nope, I was also, except minus the guitar playing....but, ditching, hell, I was a MASTER at it... :supz:
oh yeah, my daughter likes lots of music, thanks to Bryan and I. So she has a great and DIFFERENT Variety in her life....lol

You've got no idea how many jobs I up and quit on the spot as a teenager because I had a riff idea and couldn't trust that I'd remember it until after work.
-
Ok, on a serious note, Let's try this again.......Do I need to order a amp with this? I have found one for her (my daughter) but it does not come with an amp. Should it?
-
Depends on what you got her. Some guitars come with amps and a case and cord, etc as a pack. Most don't. Find an amp no louder than 15 watts (you'll thank us later) and get one with a headphone jack, so she can practice in quiet.
-
Prob going to get her this one for her Birthday. She likes it because it comes in black and not pink. The thing I am confused about is that it does not show any amp-or anything just the guitar. It does not say where or what else to get for it.

Yeah, you'll need an amp.
This one is plenty good:

Thanks Brian. That is what I was looking for. :atbeer:

I think she will be fine, It's my youngest that scares me, because she is like me in lots of ways...I am told. :bigeyes;
My youngest scares me the most too(11yrs), she is divest like me, has her Moms tempter and smart. She went with me and Earl (yes Earl Brown) to Reynolds and held her own with him and the DSR crew.
She also wants to learn to play, I think I dig out one of my guitars and give it a shot.
-
I guess we are going to get her this for her Birthday...

Did anyone else note that that cat's harmonics were pretty much flawless?
-
Our daughter has already stated that she wants the black one. She does not like the pink guitar.

And then she wants it shipped out to Uncle Sylvan so that he can adjust the neck, slap on some 11's and drop that bitch two steps. She'll be wielding the bolt of Zeus in no time.

Sounds like a plan..

11's two steps down... How about 12's at concert pitch? Where's the SRV in you man?

Yeah, that was impressive. The solo was a little off, but good overall. I'd still give it a thumbs up !
Best to learn at concert pitch. 99% of all the music books are that way.
Thats what I like about the 7 string. I still have the low B for a touch of death !
...and the rest remains unchanged.
-
Ok, I have no clue on what in the hell you guys are talking about with strings. :smt017
-

They come in different sizes. Usually measured by the high E string.
Thin strings are 0.008" whereas thicker ones are 0.012"
Thinner strings are easier to play but don't yield much tone.
On detuned guitars like Sylvans, thicker strings are a must to avoid
fret buzz and such.
However Earl Brown and I prefer G strings...

I use boomers .12 I think.. more of a blues sound.
-
Cheers! Ernie Ball Not-Even-Slinkys!
.012-.056 Although lately I've been using Power slinky's .011-.048 but I put a bass string .055 on the low side.
My Strats sound like pianos with fresh strings through tube amps.

11 to 52 or go home, motherfuckers!
...I *think* the strings on the 7 are 11 to 58...? They're Slinkys, BTW, which I don't care for but I've yet to look around to see if I can get the Blue Steels in a set of 7.

D'Addarios on my 7 ....and everything else but my acoustic and basses.

Well you all made me dig both of them out last night. Gave one to the youngest and showed her some finger exercises to work on for now. Guess I'll have to look up some online stuff for her too.
-
0.008"s are extra lights. In Sylvan's words, "You're one step away from being totally limp wristed".
Amen to that.
The primary reason I went to 11's (but there were a lot of reasons) was due to how weak and twangy they sound in a clean setting.
-
I have nothing add to the comments before me.
-
^ Where's the Kramer at man? Let's get a shot of that.
-
I will try to post a pic.
-
The little Racer X that could....awwww .
Post it, fucker.
-
I need to find my camera, fucker.
-
Received the 15 watt Crate amp today. :supz: I am going to order the guitar on Monday.
-
We ordered it, it should be here anyday!
-
Hello Kitty has arrived! :supz: We are going to open it tonight after she goes to sleep, then put it in a bigger box so when her birthday comes she will not guess what it is. (she is at that stage in life that she has to be like her father and guess what is it.)

Oh no, Zap strikes again, he has gotten into Chris's brain! Oh no, I am going to be the only and last "normal" one on this board!
Someone is "Normal" here :rofl;

For one to assume normalacy here, just shows that individual to be one of the most
truely disturbed... :prayer:
-
Well, we gave her "Hello Kitty" guitar to her this weekend for her birthday and she loves it and screamed! She is very happy. I am not sure about the dog, he runs everytime she starts picking it up. Now I have to wait for Bryan to get back from NY to try and "tune" it. It needs a good tuning. We have one happy kid here. :D
-
Nice!
Kind of crude, but do-able: http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/tuning/how-to-tune/
Even has the thing to match pitch with at the top.
-
Thanks! I just read all of this and now am sitting here with the guitar and it is even more "foreign". EEEK! I will have to do this after the kids are in bed tonight, I can't concentrate doing this too many kids running around (have neighbors kids here.) Thank you again. :atbeer:
-
I give up! lol
