Title: Guitar
Post by: TSM Girl on October 30 2007, 10:54:04 PM
Ok, question for you guys...  My daughter who is 7 is very interested in guitar. She has been interested in it since 5.  She wants an electric guitar for Christmas.  :supz: She has no clue on how to play it, but next year she will be offered music lessons at school.  My question is, should I just get a "basic" string guitar at Wally world or what??? I am not sure on what to get for her just to practice on until next year.

If you check some bigger music stores and online sites like sweetwater and musicians friend, you should be able to find a nice guitar thats scaled down for children or those with small hands.(IE: Fender telecaster j/k) I don't recommend
going too cheap otherwise the guitar you get may have to high of an action making it nearly unplayable for a beginner.

Yup, find a kid sized guitar. If you get an electric, get a really light gauge of strings on it. If you get an acoustic, get a nylon string Spanish style, WAY more forgiving than a steel string dreadnought.

Where we live, anything I get her will have to be online, the nearest place to go I think is near Memphis.   Thanks for the input.   :atbeer:

There's a Squire (Cheapy made by Fender) mini Strat available through musiciansfrien d.com that's pretty cheap. Search through their beginners packages and you'll no doubt find a guitar/small amp/gig bag dealy for about $150-ish.

She's just starting out, so I don't think that'll be a problem. Also stay away from Lydian Tuno-matic bridges. A standard bridge will work just fine.

Ok, on a serious note, Let's try this again.......Do I need to order a amp with this? I have found one for her (my daughter) but it does not come with an amp. Should it?
Title: Guitar
Post by: 87natty on February 28 2008, 05:01:29 PM
Depends on what you got her. Some guitars come with amps and a case and cord, etc as a pack. Most don't. Find an amp no louder than 15 watts (you'll thank us later) and get one with a headphone jack, so she can practice in quiet.

Prob going to get her this one for her Birthday.  She likes it because it comes in black and not pink. The thing I am confused about is that it does not show any amp-or anything just the guitar. It does not say where or what else to get for it.

My youngest scares me the most too(11yrs), she is divest like me, has her Moms tempter and smart. She went with me and Earl (yes Earl Brown) to Reynolds and held her own with him and the DSR crew.
She also wants to learn to play, I think I dig out one of my guitars and give it a shot.

Yeah, that was impressive. The solo was a little off, but good overall. I'd still give it a thumbs up !

Best to learn at concert pitch. 99% of all the music books are that way.

Thats what I like about the 7 string. I still have the low B for a touch of death !
...and the rest remains unchanged.

They come in different sizes. Usually measured by the high E string.
Thin strings are 0.008" whereas thicker ones are 0.012"
Thinner strings are easier to play but don't yield much tone.
On detuned guitars like Sylvans, thicker strings are a must to avoid
fret buzz and such.

However Earl Brown and I prefer G strings...

.012-.056 Although lately I've been using Power slinky's .011-.048 but I put a bass string .055 on the low side.

My Strats sound like pianos with fresh strings through tube amps.

0.008"s are extra lights. In Sylvan's words, "You're one step away from being totally limp wristed".
Amen to that.

The primary reason I went to 11's (but there were a lot of reasons) was due to how weak and twangy they sound in a clean setting.
