I know these are v8 guys but they seem to have such a small group their board has become fundage challenged. Didn't know if we might help em out with a section or if that is just not something that could or would be done.

Just a thought for some Buick brethren.

General Buick Tech / Lifters
« on: June 07 2022, 04:29:01 PM »
It appears as the Elgin l1969s lifters I had planned on are made in Mexico now and I don't see any old stock of the made in USA ones.
Any thoughts on the made in Mexico units or a better lifter to chose for this build.
Also came across this but it clearly states not for the turbo so I don't know what to make of that. Any Thoughts on that?

General Buick Tech / Fuel Line
« on: November 24 2021, 05:38:32 PM »
So, I'm putting together a little Limited and the frame is pretty much bare. The need for fuel and brake lines comes to the front. I'm looking at some e85 and see guys do a -8 line which from my rudimentary study is 1/2". I don't really want to do a braided PTFE line and came on this 1/2" Nicole/copper stuff. It calls itself fuel line and trans cooler line.
https://www.amazon.com/Copper-Nickel-Fuel-Transmission-Coil/dp/B01FOKISGI/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?crid=2444Q25EF0NVY&keywords=Copper%2FNickel+Alloy+Tubing+1%2F2%22&qid=1637698570&sprefix=copper%2Fnickel+alloy+tubing+1%2F2+%2Caps%2C181&sr=8-8

Any one see any reason I can't put some of this in where the stick line ran?

Next becomes a filter. I guess preferably one that fits where the sock unit was on the frame. Any suggestions there. I am thinking a swim through the motion race works site and getting a flex fuel sensor for the return line so I can do that kind of programming too.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Oh and the dw400 pump or do I need something larger. Just a street car. Maybe some 10s or high five in the eighth. Not sure, no cage for sure.

IHADAV8 Playground / Trying to order a new truck
« on: May 11 2021, 04:26:10 PM »
https://www.ramtrucks.com/bmo.ram_3500.2021.html#/build/powertrain/75270/CUT202115D23L91A/2TA/APA,PUW,X9,ESB,DFX,DME,Z3S,TCN,WBH,V9,A6B,AMP,ANT,JKV,BAJ,XAA,XHC,LPL,MR5,CLF,GFA,XMF,UAM,2GA

Wife talked me into just ordering a new truck. Son in law sell ram so we went and looked. He didn't have any 2500 or 3500 on the lot and it appears other dealers don't want to trade so we looked at used . With the state of the used market and how many miles they seem to have, the used idea as I've been doing for the last twenty yrs didn't make mathematic sense. So a new one was decided.

Went through their website and looked at what was offered. Seems the 2500 now comes equipped with "multi link" rear suspension. What is this you might ask? So did I. This means it is coil springs on the back and front . I don't know about you, but I feel a truck needs rear leafs for longevity and tough ness. I'm not buying a car. This lead me to the single wheel 3500. This unit has the rear leaves, and also comes with towing mirrors, and tow hooks where these things are options on the 2500.
Then comes the short bed angle. Used to think I needed a long bed but have been doing with a short bed for ten yrs and wife wants to drive it so short bed it is for her parking ease. Though about 4x4 but I have two and can't remember the last time I used it much less needed it so for $3k less it becomes a 2wd.

So we give the dealer a check and tell them submit the order. I get a call last night from the salesman and he tells me they have ceased taking orders for the 2021 model year. Well that isn't his fault so I guess we wait to see what happens with the pricing for the 2022 models and I guess order one of those. This gives me a little more time to make sure this is what Is best.

Any thoughts on the Ram? I've never had a dodge or Chrysler product so this will be a new experience. I looked it the Ford and both gm brands and the Chevy looks like ass to me. Ford and GMC was more expensive for what appeared to be a similarly equipped truck. So here we are I guess.

I've read over the Charlief1 poor man's suspension thread more times than I'd care to admit. I want to do some of the mods as we are swapping frames on the ogT so I thought we might as well upgrade if we are swapping stuff anyway.
I put in an order for some ssm front upper arms. Looked into the 1/2" longer ball joints and actually purchased some rear hr parts upper and lower arms. Also got an energy suspension polyurethane body bushing kit but have come to the conclusion I will probably need some new bolts. As the kit doesn't come with new ones.

This will take some time so stay tuned if interested. I'll see what can ensue and post some pix.

Box of bushings

Bag of washers and spacers I guess. I'll have to see how they come out so I know how to put them back together. Will use some never sieze though I would hope to not take it apart again.

HR parts upper arms

Part number for the 2.5" studs, not sure if these will be long enough but I didn't want to have them be way too long and have to cut em off

General Buick Tech / Used Forged Crank
« on: January 14 2021, 11:42:18 AM »
As we know I am a cheapskate. No secret.
I found a deal on a GN1 forged 4340 crankshaft that has been turned down .010/.010. This isn't a big deal to me but the seller sez it hasn't been checked for cracks, magnafluxed or whatever. This seemed like a red flag to me as I would have that done before spending the coin on the machine work.

Any one else think this is odd? Didn't really want to get stuck with a big paper weight.

Thanks

General Buick Tech / Considering an SD2 chip and all that
« on: January 08 2021, 09:46:06 AM »
I've been looking at picking up a used sd2 chip and such to run in the beater I picked up. It doesn't have a computer so I thought this might be the poor guys way to get it to tuning and such. I have minimal experience with hptuners and have watched YouTube vids on timing and such.

Anything I should be aware of when trying this out?
Looks like it would come with the chip, possibly a powerlogger and a computer . Seller sez it is setup for 80lb injectors but I am thinking I want to try some e85 so I might want some 120s not sure yet.

Thanks for the input.

General Buick Tech / Cowl Tag decifer
« on: November 08 2020, 06:57:28 AM »

Anyone good a decifering? I'm thinking the 19L and 19u is black paint upper and lower and the AR9 is bucket seats. Any other info that can be had from this tag? No deck lid so no spid label. Suppose to be and 87 shell

General Buick Tech / Always thinking...
« on: November 29 2019, 04:49:48 PM »
So , I picked up a 4.1 short block a couple months ago. It is said to be .040 over so will need some custom earl brown pistons. Looking at probably doing a half fill of hard blok or maybe more. Still reading on that.

And I want to do a forged crank.
https://www.cnc-motorsports.com/eagle-4140-forged-steel-crankshaft-buick-38l-v6-external-balance-523134005967e.html
Mostly to avoid a girdle and keep the crank and webs in the block. Not a track only. Gonna drive it. There were cheaper forged ones but then we get into internally balanced and strokers.

https://www.cnc-motorsports.com/eagle-4140-forged-steel-crankshaft-buick-38l-v6-523136255967.html

That just adds to complexity and cost. I'm not even sure I want to do fancy rods. I'm cheap that way. I just want to get the block checked out, make sure the decks are decent and the bores are straight.

Not even really sure I need a forged crank but I'm not sure what it in this short block I bought so I'm probably gonna need a crank. Though I'd rather spend the money on decent heads.

Any thoughts?

As some who are following along know, my og we4 took a hit. I have several leads on parts and such to repair it, and thanks to everyone who has helped.

I have another iron in the fire as it were. Let's say you came across a semi low miles car that someone took apart. Said vehicle is sitting on some pallets with the frame leaning against the wall. Let's say the Frame is stripped and has been notched. You know just for giggles. Front suspension is off, rear end was sold.

But in said fantasy I have another car with some rust issues on the radar. Said to have a good frame and floor pans but doors and such not as much. Said fantasy vehicle has a bunch of the parts to put the WE4 back together. And would yield a rolling frame .

This could theoretically be used to set this fantasy low miles car on and get it to my garage. This brings the question. Can I pick up the rear end of the body by the trunk catch loop without hurting anything? I'm theoretically going to pick up the front and set it across a 4x4 piece of wood held up by some tires/rims and this leaves the back and how to get it up so we can roll the chassis under it. I thought this would be way better for transport than trying to do just the bars body. Tell me what it won't work or what you would do instead. I have six wheels/tires that measure about 30" tall stacked 3high on each side then the 4x4 wood. Slip the chassis under let it down bolt it with some of the fasteners and pull it up on the trailer and strap it down for transport.

Let me hear from ya.

I don't know this guy but I've gained a bunch of knowledge of that website he has. Appears he might need help to keep it up and going. I have no idea how much I'm asking as I don't know website assembly or that type stuff. Just thought if someone had the time they might help him out.

Thanks

General Buick Tech / Had a bit of bad luck
« on: August 21 2019, 11:28:19 AM »

Well after over thirty yrs of ownership(bought it new and have enjoyed driving it very much), a lady ran into the back of it on the way to work last Monday. It will be repaired, and I'm waiting on the lady's insurance to come out and adjust on it.

Gonna need a frame, pass quarter and some other parts, bumper, tail light, cap, filler ect...

This brings me to the question. Can I use any G body frame? Do i "need" a turbo regal specific frame? The car wont be sold in my lifetime, I have two children that love it and I'm sure one will become the care taker when I"m gone. Original is kinked(see pic) so I'm not really wanting to try to have it "pulled" back. Considered doing a frame notch but would not think it would be as strong as a not previously kinked one.

Any thoughts as I'm sure there have been others who have been through this traumatic experience.

Worst part was the little chevy that hit it was just scratched up and she drove it away.
