General Buick Tech / Re: factory tach/boost unit

I have one of Eric's chip, 50lb injectors and a upgrade fuel pump.

I checked with my friend that built the motor many years back!!! he did say the motor need to come out... so I really doubt if the head stud has the allen key end.

I have figured if it is bad head gasket or something else.  for the last 2 years when I bring the car out from storage, I notice water in the pan... so I drain the pan, put in new oil & GM's rad pill/leak fix.   I let it run for a while and drain the pan.  The first change over, the oil looks like chocolate milk.  I do this a couple of time until the oil looks like oil.    I have done 2 oil change since... and no sign of antifreeze or leak.  I guess those GM rad pills for... for a season.

I guess over the winter, the antifreeze slowly leaks into the motor.  I hope it is head gasket... but I fear the worse.. like a crack block or something.  Unfortunately, I don't have garage space to do work!!!!

And now for my next dilemma, my 2009 GMC Sierra is in for a motor rebuild.  I thought is was the dreaded bad lifters... but the dealership said something happen to the bottom end.... that is $8000.

Daveismissing and Scoob have hinted at something he needs even more.
Well...  My brakes did give up in the spring.  I tried swapping a couple spare accumulator that I had... but it kept on blowing fuses.

I was thinking about taking the car to you (Brad) or Dan... but i didn't think it was safe to venture very far...  so I bought bought a new GM master & booster and swapped everything over.

I googled searched and noticed some people weren't bleeding the brakes after the swap... which is what I did.  I didn't feel like crawling under the car & bleeding the brakes... though I did buy new calipers & wheel cylinder.   the brakes feel a little soft for my liking... but better than the PM.

right now, I may need my head gaskets replace... but the engine needs to be taken out because I got head studs.   Trying to find someone now.

I sincerely hope you aren't using the stock rpm and boost gauges to gather meaningful info. The weren't accurate when the cars were new and are even worse now with their age. You need a tach and a decent boost gauge along with a scanmaster if you plan to do meaningful racing. If you don't have these I can almost guaranty a problem that will cost you much more than these three things will cost upfront.
I've got a scanmaster and autometer boost gauge.

At idle... the factory tach show almost 2400 rpms, and when I step on it... I see red as the RPM maxes out. The factory boost gauge lights ups like crazy.

I checked all vacuum line and they seem tight.  Autometer boost shows a better reading than the factory guage when I did a couple of highway passes.

I was thinking about taking the sending the factory tach & boost unit to Caspers

thanks all.

Hi all

My factory tach has gone haywired... and probably needs to get re calibrated.

question... if the factory tach is bad, does that also impact the factory boost gauge.  I am trying to figure out if the factory boost gauge is still working properly or not... or I may have a vacuum leak somewhere.  With just a light throttle, 2 or 3 bars light up on the boost gauge... but nothing moves on the aftermarket gauge.

I remember with a vacuum leak, the factory boost gauge would light up pretty quick with any sort of throttle response... but I can't remember if the needle also moved on the aftermarket boost gauge.

thanks... dave

Tar Baby.  I will pass your number along to Dave M.

Dan.  I think Dave M. told me his end tanks were bad/shot... and that is why he couldn't recore his rad.

General Buick Tech / Re: starter does not turn over

Hi Brad

Yes, I am still driving around with minimum brakes.  The floors arent rusted through to be able to do the flintstone emergency stop.  Now, I drive like a granny... so it give me enough time to stop.

as for my no start starter... I switched to a mini starter that I found in my hoard of parts.  Starts great... but now I have exhaust leaks all over...  since I had to take off the downpipe & crossover pipe to get the stupid start out.

The car has been put to sleep for another year.

Hi All

finally got a chance to work on the car.
- Did the battery voltage test.  It was showing 10.2 volts, dropped to just under 9 after turning on ignition
- I thought a charged battery should show 12v??  It is also showing 10.2 on my scanmaster

anyways, I took the front tires off, and banged on the starter and jiggle the wires
- turned on the ignition and starter "tried" to turn over
- jumped the battery with my truck and the car starts up
- drove it around for a bit, thinking the battery would be charged... but after I stopped and restarting it car again, I just hear the clicking of the starter

Well looks like I may need a new a battery and possibly replace the starter... or at least check the wire.

One more question... Can I kill or overcharge an AGM battery?  Since the battery died a few weeks back, I have been slow charging is using a Genius charger.  It doesn't appear to have fully charge for the week that I was charging it.  Its not an OPTIMA... but I did have/use for over 10 years.

thanks...dave

Hi

thanks for all the replies.

this weekend, I will try everything out
- put a meter to the battery
- try & jump the starter from underneath the car
- play around with the steering column... I did try to start the car in all gear... but nothing.
- and lastly dave... I will scrounge the basement and try & find
1/. where the "other half" put my service manuals :)
2/. the mini starter that I have been hoarding for years :)
3/. find & burn the service manuals to disc

General Buick Tech / starter does not turn over
« on: October 10 2018, 10:26:56 PM »
hi all

Battery died a week ago... so I took it out to charge.  anyways, I put it back in the car tonite and no start.  The starter does not turn over.  I even tried to jumping the battery with my truck but nothing.

I don't have manuals.  Is there a starter fuse or main fuse?  Is there anything that would cause the start turn over or start.  I never had any problems with the starter. I've been driving the car all summer.  I don't know if I might have done something when I pulled & put the battery back in the car

I did one more experiment since its dark out.  I turned on the car lights on, and tried to start the car.  The headlights dims very very slightly.  Don't know if there some power going to the start.

any other suggestions or recommendation ... before I start crawling under my car this weekend

thanks in advance.

I guess I need to find the proper automotive DYI kit.

Hi all

Can I use and is it safe to use a water base fog machine to troubleshoot vacuum leaks?

There's a "halloween" fog machine on sale at Walmart.

I've got one of Eric's chips for my 50lber.  My Scanmaster shows +200f when the fan kicks on.  It use to turn on around 170f... and my car never reach 200f.  Now my car runs 200-210... and is a slug at the temperature.

My AC doesn't work... so vent/fan are always off... and window rolled down.

Are the high and low fan relays switches the same?  I was thinking swapping the switches and see if the fan turns on at 170f

Battery seems fine... but I'll check my voltage tomorrow and get the battery that I was trying to sell... charged!!!
