Title: Good converter for my set up????

When my transmission was rebuilt I ended up with a 1900 stall converter based on the recommendation of the tranny guy. I'm now thinking its a bad match(wish I had done more research). Should I just be going with the stock d5 converter or a higher stall, lock up, non lock up. I don't really know my asshole from my elbow with converters so any help will be appreciated


Stock turbo
Stock down pipe
Adjustable waste gate
High flow cat & cat-back exhaust
Comp cam 260h
Roller rockers
Port & polished heads
Stock intercooler


Hope thats enough info I don't have all the receipts on motor & transmission build with me right now.


I want to order a turbo tweak chip and 60 lb/hr injectors but don't know which Converter I should put in the my set up part of the order. When car is running it will be going to transmission shop to be adjusted and if the converter I hav is a bad match I will order a better one now and have it changed while there.

Stock D5 turbo was 2200-2400. That would work fine. Don't go higher then 2800 with a stock turbo.

Thanks, I'm going to talk to the transmission guy tomorrow to have him order a 2200-2400 converter then order my chip and injectors. Was excited as all hell thinking I was gonna be firing the car up Monday but I've waited this long no sense in cutting corners at this point. Thanks again for your help

Order it from a known Buick vendor or you will end up with what you have again.  Put your 1900 in a Chevy where it belongs and will stall at 2400.

I believe it was in house from GM Powertrain.  Not sure about these days.

the first time i had my trans done i ended up with a D7 which i believe was also 1900 or less.
the car was a OLD FAT LAZY COW.

Had a D7 in my GN when first purchased. Stalled at 1750 via DS. Best 60 foot was a 2.2.

Highly unlikely that numbers mean anything today when buying a restalled converter as it could have started life as a D5, D7, or whatever.  Rebuilt from the factory may say D5 but most likely will be around 1900 in its rebuilt state.

The thing to keep in mind is that the stock converter was around 2200 and it matched the stock powerband very well as it was strong from about 2200-4800 rpm.  Popping in a 2800 converter will spin the tires like mad which will slow you down and give up some of the powerband that made the cars such a pleasure on the street from a roll.

On the other hand, the advertised 2800 converter may only stall 2400-2600 on a stock engine/turbo so it may not be that bad in the long run and it does leave some room to grow if one moves up to a TE44/TA49 and adds alky

used them for years in customers cars.. 11/12's.. hell have one in my wagon to  :cool;
