Title: Aftermarket door shels
Post by: RightyTighty on June 07 2017, 02:42:28 PM
I'm want to replace my doors. One has a little rust that may be bad in 5 years. Replace the whole thing and start fresh.

The ones I found are a half pound of so heavier. I'm concerned. I don't want to be the guy 10 years from now saying "yeah I went with the heavier doors and now my hinges are bad and the columns they bolt to are warped". Not to mention warpage that could happen where the door bolts to the hinge too.

Opinions? Go!

As heavy as the original doors are, I doubt 0.5 lb is going to make much difference. Searching out original stuff is getting pretty difficult, not to mention the shipping. I'd find a good body guy and do the skins, or fix what you have with some patches.

I agree with Rich, 1/2 lb ain't nutthin'. Now as I recall both LQK and Highway Stars have both doors and skins. Glen( Highway) had them on display and indicated he measured many many doors to get a true "average' dimension.
Wish these guys would not develop the same product rather work on something not available.

Steve your right. I wouldn't have even thought about it.

Let me add more to the mix. Aftermarket speaker, concert sound, inside door painted, bottom inside door probably coated with something heavy. Now we're talking two pounds.

I'm already prepared to buy lighter speakers. I've always been paranoid with my stock doors. What I'm worried about most is where the hinge connects to the body.

The good thing about replacing the doors is that when I feel like it I can restore the old doors and sell em. I don't have time to get into that project right now as I'd make them as perfect as possible, like new doors.

A door must weigh 80lbs ( pacecar says the shell is 54lb) You won't save enough to make a difference. folly
