Honestly...
My '82 Honda CIVIC.  It was a work horse that never failed me.
My '82 Ford Bronco.  Of the 15 cars and trucks I had in high school that was my favorite...it wasn't the fastest, but we had the most fun in it.
Other than that, nope...didn't really ever have a car worth a crap until I got the GN and I still have it after close to 20 years now.

All our junk has RJC's.  :cool; I just don't like the look of a "T Bolt".
RJC racing?  I was just on his site...all I see are T-bolt clamps.

I have a variety of different styles that came with the pipes, FMIC, etc.  and i just wanted to standardize them.

We blew off the up pipe on the dyno.  Luckily the hood was open so no war wounds.  When we tightend up the t-bolt clamp it snapped.

If I were in the market to make four digit power I think I would go directly to ta performance and proceed from there. Unless you like the nostalgia aspect of the Buick motorsports stuff I would think it is worn out or why would these people be unloading it?

I'm not sure how much use they've seen, they've been in crates for as long as I can remember since '98.

These people seem to think the worm is better than the t-bolt.

The problem with T-bolt clamps is their range of motion is nowhere near that of a worm clamp.   In other words, you have to get REALLY specific with the sizes.  You have to make sure the bolt doesn't bottom out before full clamping force is applied (and on the other side, being able to start the bolt in the first place).

To make it worse they usually size them based on the OD of the solid pipe plus the guesstimated thickness of the coupler.  For example a 3" clamp is actually around 3-1/4" in real life ID.

When I started doing my MAF pipes and custom up-pipes it was a nightmare to find sizes that actually work in real life.  ESP since a turbo bell is bigger than 3" much like an LT1 sensor.

Moral of the story, it takes multiple orders to get the size.   Even more if you hate a bunch of exposed threads when you tighten them down

Don't the worm clamps have issues with contraction though when things heat up/cool down?

I went down a rabbit hole with t-bolt clamps...

Is any brand really better than any other?

Most of the sites say to measure inside diameter of the pipe to determine size, but when I read reviews people say that got them all screwed up and got the wrong sizes.

What's a good range of different sizes to have on hand?

General Buick Tech / Off Center vs On Center block pros/cons
« on: May 05 2018, 05:13:31 PM »
Would like to get a fresh perspective on this rather than 10 year old threads on the other forums.

What are the pros/cons of an off center block versus an on center block.

I have an opportunity to purchase some stage 2 off center blocks.

From what I remember, the off center allows you to swap out parts interchangeabl y with a stock 109, cylinder banks were shifted fore/aft, ring seals seal better with an on center, on center can see upwards of 1500HP while an off center is around 1200HP, and on center parts are crazy expensive compared to off center.

But that's about all I remember.

I'm not looking for that kind of HP.  But I am interested if getting these blocks would be worth considering and aside from power, what's the benefit?  Other than being able to gloat you have a stage 2 motor.

As for the cold case, you either have to mod the car as per the link or mod the radiator itself.  I went with the radiator.

Instead of cutting that piece off the car we actually cut a slit in the radiator for that to slide into.

It is a tight fit, a very tight fit...a "this fucker isn't going to fit" tight fit, lets yell and scream at it tight fit.  The key is to drink a couple of beers and come at it from another angle.  And getting the radiator hold down plate or whatever it's called back on top of it is fun...if you don't have a hernia you will by the time you are done.

But it works like a champ.  I have dual spals and the cold case, I'm not boxed in.  Still keeping it in the 160-170 range with a FMIC and AC on, but it was also only 80 degrees.  Need to see how it works when it's 100 degrees here in southern AL.

As for Hartline, we got the Buick GN owner and party discount.  I'm told pricing varies on...variables .

IHADAV8 Playground / Annual Check In
« on: April 18 2018, 12:50:55 PM »
I had to find a pic of something I took awhile back and wound up back here...so thought I'd at least check in.  Been avoiding forums and just using FB mostly for Buick stuff.  The Buick Grand National Tech FB page is actually pretty good...some of the others, not so much.

Anyways, the Buick is still running...lol, it only took 3 different motor builders to finally get one that would not eat itself.

Just put on a new 6262 and Cold Case radiator.

I don't OCD over it as much as I used to, more worried about functionality and longevity than anything else now with it.

Next week should be exciting, meeting up with about 5 or 6 other TR owners in Panama City and Hartline is coming up for dyno/tuning of our XFI.  Knock on wood my car doesn't destroy itself on the dyno.

I got married.

Still live in Fairhope, AL.

And I actually have some people nearby that own GNs now for when I do break something and need help.

After further review, while I may not agree with their shipping practices, HighwayStars has just sent me the most beautifully packaged package I have ever recieved. Overkill for what I ordered but definatly two thumbs up!

I'm surprised to see someone still ship with peanuts...I hate those things, they get everywhere.  My box showed up quick...cold AC on the way.
