Title: Engine Balance
Post by: daveismissing on February 12 2016, 11:03:11 AM
Rich posted an interesting article:

http://bangshift.com/bangshift1320/bangshift1320-tech-stories/deep-tech-compensating-for-the-dozens-of-variable-that-affect-engine-balance-requires-serious-research-and-experimentation/ (http://bangshift.com/bangshift1320/bangshift1320-tech-stories/deep-tech-compensating-for-the-dozens-of-variable-that-affect-engine-balance-requires-serious-research-and-experimentation/)

And I'm reading "IF cylinders were directly opposed ...counterweig hts...etc... "
Hmmm, never thought about it,... Subaru?...

Is that just the engines for the boxer or all of them?

I'm pretty sure the 911 Porsche has an apposed arrangement but the 928 is a v8. As you can see these are older models. I'm not even sure about newer stuff. I always liked those two models.

That was a good read.  Thanks for sharing Rich!  I'm not certain but believe the horizontally opposed engine was designed by a German individual. I do know that BMW used an opposed engine in some of their cars. And I can't think of any production piston aircraft that don't use a horizontally opposed engine.

Didn't some of those old 70s small planes(Cherokee maybe) have the valve covers sick out the side behind the propeller? Maybe they were radial, I'm not real up on aircraft.

I thought it a cool article on a subject I don't know too much about. Funny how there is so much knowledge out there we would never be exposed to without the interwebz.
