Info on Champion ported iron "smog heads"
« on: January 02 2006, 02:16:55 PM »
Open question for all participants, but primarily Top Speed, who I know has smog heads from Champion?
How long ago did you buy your heads?
Did they remove the hump?
Did they fill the passages?
Did they fill the EGR mounting pad?
Does your EGR actually perform the function that it did before the Champion irons, or does it just give a vacuum signal, and make it look like it performs it's function/
Does your car have to go on rollers for the smog test?
Any suprises on the smog test?
Did you do a "before  & after" dyno run?
What do you feel that the hp & tq increases are?

Gary, regarding the Champion heads, they make two types -iron 8445 CNC, and aluminum.  I have the iron heads.  The irons can be bought with the egr tower filled with lead or left as cast.  I chose to leave the egr functional since I have to pass  yearly emissions in Atlanta.  The emissions test is performed on rollers here for older vehicles.

I bought my heads in January of 2004.   The egr system is the stock system.

Did not do any before/after testing as my whole combo changed - not just adding heads.

The stock heads flow something like 160 cfm and the Champion Irons flow something like 205 cfm I believe.

Definitely an improvement over stock.

I also put on a new high flow cat which I would highly recommend.  My car passed emissions easily.
Champion Irons w/T&D roller rockers, TA-61 turbo, 206/206 Comp Cam,  57 lb/hr Siemens Injectors, 3000 stall PTC, PTE Plenum w/RJC Power Plate, 70 mm Accufab Throttle Body, RJC 325 Megacooler, TurboTweak 5.7/ Alky Control w/M1 methanol, 23 psig on the street, Puddn' Power engine, Borla Exhaust

And it seems to me that I heard that the guy in or around San Diego that was doing heads so well so cheep is no longer there or in business. I think that he did most of the San Diego area GNs

You mean Mike Mendenhall? I worked next door to him. Good guy, a little rough around the edges.

I guess so, what is his business name. there used to be somebody down around there that was very good, and I don't think that they are in business anymore, don't remember the name. Is Mendenhall who does morgan & all of the San diego clan's heads?

I don't know. We did Don Wang's. He used to be in the South Bay, down the street from my house. Then he worked out of his garage starting about 3-4 years ago. He worked before at Pete Thompson's old shop, the Racers Part Store.

Gary, don't dive in yet. Look into Jackson Cylinder heads. They
do a set of ported irons that flow something like 220 cfms.

Those were the heads that were given away in one of the contests a
while back. I don't have a link, but I'm sure if you did a search on any
of the larger boards, you'd find something. However, I may have some pics.
