Made a trip to Home Depot and got the fittings I needed.

The question I have:
Do I need to get these fittings really tight if I use copious amounts of PTFE liquid thread sealer? It will be tough to get the alignment I need if I have to bottom out every connector.

I would not use copious amounts and I would tighten by feel. I assume those are pipe thread fittings and they are not made to be tightened to the end of the threads...snug them up til they feel tight

Otherwise, you will be picking chinese brass out for the rest of your life

single terminal senders depend on grounding through the threads?
suppose that's easy enough to check with a meter

yep...that is the reason to use a little thread sealer and to never use teflon tape according to the gauge manufacturers. ...
