Here I go again, beware.
Last night I was researching eBay to see what my stuffs worth. Right now I have nothing for sale I just want to see completed prices so I can beam on my collection and make notes if I die. Kidding about the beaming part.
Right off (searching 'NOS grand national') I see tons of stuff. Ugh, value drop. But wait?! That's reproduction, right?
Maybe I'm wrong but oem marker lights have overspray on the white parts, right? Headlight bezels, same, gray molded with overspray. Hood badges have shadowing and an orange/red tape protector and the boxes are different. Umm, didn't think to check for nos grills but I know they're different than reproductions.
Be careful if your going to buy NOS. It looks like people are using legit packaging and filling it with reproduction. I need to sell my boxes lol.
A well known member of the community, who would most definatly know the difference has some marker lights posted as NOS, but the backs are pure white, very nice lamps but I think they're repro. Am I right or wrong?
And hoodpads? Wooo. I'd ONLY buy a 9hole if I was worried about reproductions/NOS. Not looking to buy one but I would in a second, I'd buy every one. lol

I know Goodmark is repopping the markers, bezels, and grills, but I haven't heard of anyone doing TR specific hood pads.

Highway Stars had some items made in the original molds, what do we call those parts? They are also licensed to make new parts and have access to original specs.
Our other (largest?) vendor(s) has played fairly loose with the term OEM.

I don't think it matters much anymore for consumable/wearable parts like lens, rubbers, body parts. The line is drawn with you try to rename a clone as the real thing. In 1969 they made around 50 ZL1 Camaro's. Now there are 1000's on the road. GNX's are at every show I go to that are fake. Like I said years ago you cant rebuild a 90 year old woman into Pamela Anderson with new boobs and plastic filler and call it OEM or NOS :icon_eyes:

I haven't heard of anyone doing TR specific hood pads.
I think Kirban is doing or did an 8hole. What are all those I saw on eBay? I swear 15 years ago 8holes were limited and 9s were so rare I never saw one for sale. Did someone find some stashed somewhere? I don't know but I'd like to. Just to know.

There is still some NOS parts floating around, but, I suspect there are a lot more repros than anything today. The better stuff should be licensed by GM, but, that is no guarantee of exactness. Then, there is a lot of counterfeit stuff coming in from overseas, etc.
My experience is that GM licensed stuff may be close, but, it may, or may not, be exact, or fit as well as the original stuff. Modern plastic repros may last longer than 30 yr old NOS. I would hate to pay ridiculous prices for original stuff, but, then, I am not into restoration all that much.

Got lost for a second.
I love opinions on clones and nos and restoration, aftermarket. I haaaate clones, to me they take away the mystique. I wonder how it feels to have to say 'it's a clone' knowing your bout to totally disappoint someone.
I applaude reproduction stuff and the effort people have put into manufacturing high quality replacement parts. I have helped those companies grow through the years, many of us have. We have all financed that stuff and the companies spent the money making more stuff. The guys in the future gunna have it easy.

There's some issues with the 'OS' in 'NOS'.... some say it stands for ' New Old stock' and some say it stands for 'New Obsolete Stock'.
Needless to say that anything made current isn't old or obsolete even if its made with original tooling. So based on that it can't be NOS either way.
That leads into the 'worth' aspect.... 'Worth' as in money is not the same as in 'worth' as in 'the exact fucking thing you need to do what you need to do'.
I guess it just depends on your angle of attack.
Then again, it is kinda gray.... I listed some 'NOS' idler pulleys on Ebay I found that were made in the USA. Turns out you can still buy them, kinda.... But not USA made. Does that make me an asshole.....

I remember a few years a go a friend was so happy to find a NOS A212CW air filter for his big block Camaro. Installed drove and flatbeded home. All the paper in the element go sucked down the carb. Some items don't age well :icon_eyes:

maaan, that sucks. Makes me think about nos bumper fillers. I swore someone stole mine on my drive back from Vegas, come to find out I left pieces across 6 states. :rofl:

It's amazing how consistent those things go bad. I remember years ago putting gas in my GN, looked down and noticed a crack on the rear filler.
Within 6 weeks the other three cracked and the RR had a second one.

Look at how we see cars from 100 years ago. Crickity ass wooden spoked wheels chugging along at a snails pace using exhaust to fire a horn. And that's after you crank it...with a crank! :rofl:

I've never had a filler go bad and I drove my 85 T-Type in the winter. It seems the hot climates kill them. And for that reason I am staying in the cold! :)

MY car had a repaint at around year 4 . Between that and being under a cover or roof 6 months a year they seem to be holding well. The ones on the Arizona car are toast.Maybe I can find white duct tape...

Same ones on my car from when I purchased it 15 years ago...still mint. Doubtful they're original from 87. Car had a repaint when I purchased it...likely changed then.

The guy I bought it from had a high end used car dealership in Niagara Falls. Maybe he bought NOS at the repaint.

I know for a fact that the fillers on both my cars are original. When the cars aren't out on the street they stay in the garage so that probably helps.

My car has stayed indoors most of its life. Only has about 70,000 km's on it...maybe they are original.
