Title: Video cards cheap again?
Post by: daveismissing on April 25 2018, 10:47:38 PM
....We reported earlier in the month that cryptocurrency mining machine manufacturers were being asked to halt planned shipments of their ASICs (https://www.pcgamesn.com/cryptocurrency-mining-slowdown) due to “lackluster replacement demand for mining machines.” Thankfully the same thing seems to be happening to graphics card manufacturers too.
DigiTimes claims that Taiwanese card makers, Gigabyte, MSI, and TUL, are all expecting to see shipments in April drop by a massive 40% month-on-month. They’re saying that a lot of their big clients, such as distributors and mining farms, have either suspended, or cut, their orders of graphics cards.
It all seems to be down to a combination of a general slowdown in the cryptocurrency market overall, as well as a growing trend of companies holding back on graphics card purchases because of the Bitmain ASICs set to arrive in the third quarter of this year. Those are the ASICs specifically designed to take on the previously GPU-centric Ethereum and Monero altcoins.

This mining seems to cost more than the miner gets out of it. And the rollercoaster ride of "value" sure doesn't make me want to or even think that it is a good idea to be "investing" in the equipment much less the electric it takes for who knows what kind of return. Even the ripple and etherium bitcoin wanna be currencies don't seem to have stabilized and who knows what governments will impose as far as restrictions and such.

I guess ill just keep going to the job and see how that works out

NVIDIA is still pretty proud of their stuff.  Seems they're selling all the V100's they can to Cloud AI providers.  AMD is quite interesting these days though.

AMD has gotten serious about their products.  That lady that is running the company now wants to be number one.

They AMD still have a presence here ( the old ATI Video buyout). I'd like to see them recover and remain strong competition. ARM based chips seem to be taking over tho

I do this for a living.  Most modern processors are limited by the speed of main memory.  The gold standard used to be 4 memory channels per socket.  Upped the game to 6.  AMD Zen upped it to 8.  So most engineering codes run pretty good on zen even though it's 1/2 the flops/clock compared to skylake.

ARM is interesting and has the same benefits as Zen but it's not X86 compatible.

I can't code worth sh*t. However my colleagues get Microchip, Luminary, TI and now Atmel/Mchip ARM embedded chips thrown at them, with the occasional FPGA. Lots of real time instrumentatio n and telemetry. And a QNX box in charge of it all. We are at the opposite end of the spectrum from Cray/TRS80.

For some reason, I thought you were at GeekGhost.  Got me.

You need to cut your loses on those video cards and donate them to your loyal followers :D

We've got a pretty interesting little high density GPU box if you want to talk

We have some ready to deploy - 8x GTX1080Ti, dual E5 Tyan. Shared IPMI is the only thing some take issue with.

We have other Supermicro solutions that will support up to 10x 1080Ti.

We have direct relationships with PNY and Nvidia as well .
