I'm on hitch this week up in Altus, Oklahoma. Momma and the kids at home in central Texas but have relatives coming up today from the coast. Kind of glad I'm at work

I hope those down there are making good choices and doing some evacuating. This is something that shouldn't be thought of as "I've made it through before". Mother nature is not to be taken lightly.

Toronto Sun has several dozen pics of the devastation in Texas...and the storm could linger a couple of days. This is gonna be worse than Katrina.

I thought I heard on the news that it would drop 600 milliliters of rain in the worst spots? That's a lot of water in a couple days!  :O
Title: Re: Thinking of Texas

I think some areas, are projected to receive over a 1000 ml  I think my son's area has close to 450 mm in the past 24 hrs...he's okay, so far the drainage is working.  he's had about 3 ft standing in the street in front of his house but it goes away 30 minutes after it stops raining....Thi s stuff is projected to go on for another three days unless the weather patterns change.

ABC13.com is streaming pictures plus the Weather channel, but the ABC is better for pics.  Tornado hit a block from my son's yesterday

Seeing lots of pics from folks I grew up with down on the east side Houston. Rain won't stop. Houses flooding. Tornadoes moving in and out of neighborhoods. Making Carter, Alicia and Ike look like little toys.

Thought my son was going to escape the flooding, but this afternoon, the bayous overflowed, the drainage stopped and water is rising in his area.  Neighborhoods around him have evacuated and the overflow from those areas is coming into his neighborhood.  Rained all day instead of being in bands.  Think he is around 30 inches now

If the weather channels' to be believed, there's a front holding the storm in place.
Title: Re: Thinking of Texas
Post by: Steve Wood on August 28 2017, 11:59:05 PM
I think there is a high pressure system on both sides of it holding it stationery.  They are forecasting another foot or more of rain in the next two days.  At the moment, the water has stopped rising at my son's but he is still in danger...

Dry air!!! That'll put a damper on it. Coming in from the south thankfully. That dry air is a storm extinguisher.

Better keep your tank full of gas. Refineries on the coast of Texas are shut down.

Being retired I don't do much driving anymore...so the oil companies can take a long hard suck on my ass.

If you're watching the news, I grew up on Cedar Bayou there in Mont Belvieu/Baytown area. Lots of friends under water. My brother lives in Dayton but he's on the high side and hasn't been in trouble yet. Keep them in your prayers and please shoot looters on site

They say about 80% of the homes do Not have Flood insurance so that's really going to screw people up! Sad!

Maybe the Texas guys can chime in and let us know how much flood insurance is. Must be astronomical?
Title: Re: Thinking of Texas
Post by: Pyro6 on August 30 2017, 08:05:16 AM
I just read an article that says only 15% of the people have it. It's so expensive in a flood plain most can't afford it. The coverage seems to be so limited too. Anything under 1st floor level isn't covered except necessary appliance, like a furnace. So i f you have a fixed up basement, not covered. During Katrina it stated that all federal assisstance maxed out at $30,000 per household.

I am not up to date on it, but it used to be mandatory if you lived inside the 100 year flood plane.  I know that I made sure I was not within those areas.  It was very expensive and covered very little.

Sounds like it may be around 700-1K (google) per annum

No basements in this part of the country .
Sadly, many if not most have lost a lot.

It costs more to dig a basement than it does to build a house over it.  Not very many storm cellars in this area but I wish I had one!

Storm shelters are good. I need to build one. Old school style, just a box in the ground, so I can live, live to see another day. Nowadays people think they gotta build a home away from home.

I hope everyone is doing well.  Lots of loss there for sure.  I hope everyone pulls through!  I never had to deal with floods just forest fires.

Explosives out of the question?

Not necessarily. I'm not up to date on buying powder anymore.  I used to be able to pick up the phone and order all I wanted before I retired.

Problem with powder is making a nice square cut  instead of just blowing a pit and then having to haul all the debris out...

FFF as in pistol powder?

FFF as in pistol powder?
Yes sir. I've built a couple of replica muzzle loaders. My current favorite is a .45 caliber Vincent. FF not quite as fine as FFF and burns a little slower than FFF. 50 yards or less and I load with FF. Anything further and I load FFF in my rifles.

Felons are not to allowed to have firearms or hunt with one, but they can use a muzzle loader down here to hunt with.  Not sure where that came from lol

Wood is tiger stripe maple. Finished with linseed oil applied by my bare finger. You can't imagine how many coats of linseed oil are on the stock. I apply another coat about once a year to keep it looking good.  You can get the stocks in several different grades. I don't skimp on the stock. This one is the highest grade that's available. I have a trunk of a mesquite tree that's been sitting in the barn for 3-4 years. Want to make my own stock someday.

Folks are a bit bigger than they used to be. That butt takes a bit to get used to the placement. It doesn't sit where people hold a rifle these days.
