Title: Motor mounts
Post by: daveismissing on February 06 2019, 08:25:34 AM
Are they really worth over $100 each? Seems steep, how bad are the cheapies?

You only need 1 of the $100 ones,
Before the naysayers show up there are different $100 ones Get the ''street one'' and be good forever.

If you are relatively close to stock, the aftermarket replacements are not that bad.  Should be good for another 80K kms

you may feel a bit more vibration if you go with a poly mount, but one should last forever...espe cially for you old guys :D

I've been using the same ole (USA made) cheapies on my car for a couple decades now.

Granted, I can't win a bench race with them, but I also don't have a car that feels like it has a bad wheel bearing.       ....and the buzzy rear view mirror to go with it.

If you abuse it a poly is nice. You can firm up a rubber mount with a little fab work - it needs a piece of flat stock in between the tabs, the real trick is welding it up without catching the rubber on fire.

Cheapass ones on mine...surpris e surprise. RJC transmission motor mount for launching. Works mint...no vibration.

I have the HR parts on the left and right, and also the trans mount on my GN. Going from the stockers to the polys I experienced no new vibrations. I was warned that I would, but it never happened. :D

I run a new stock DS one on Ltd, nothing else. Of course the car wouldn’t pull a hen off a nest power wise. Lol

I have had the HR Poly mounts for 14 years and have worked great, no problems.  They raised the engine up a good bit and lifted the downpipe off the frame compared to the old saggy stockers they replaced.

Rubber engine mounts and a poly trans is begging for a cracked trans case :hmm

yep...engine can roll a small amount when it torques over, but the tranny is locked down tight so the case is twisted from the front.

At least we’ve moved on from anchoring the drivers side head to frame with one of the various engine limiting contraptions that the vendors used to push (maybe some still do?).

That's why some of us have the ear broken off the accessory bracket :D

The torque strap serviced its purpose back in the day before poly motor mounts.

Like Scoobum, I do not remember any cracked trans cases with conventional style mounts of any kind. I have seen broken mounts and all kinds of trans issues.
The old gasser's were somewhat famous for it. They had round tubing chassis and tied in motor/trans plates.
Not saying it doesn't happen, rather I have not seen it. I have seen oem style solid mounts used, but not in all 3 locations.

Years ago, i had a guy go though 8 powerglide cases in 3 seasons. Those cases let go internally.
In '71, I built a motor for a guy who had a clutch explosion that tore the hood off the hinges. Plus considerable other damage. I bought the motor back cheap.

How many of those that you are recalling had either solid or near solid poly transmission mounts under the tail shaft and conventional rubber mounts on the engine without some form of tie down?

The quick answer is none. Everyone I know is concerned with the drivers side motor mount. I consider poly nearly the same as solid.I have seen one or both motor mounts solid.
The answer to the Gasser problem was a front and mid plate w/rubber trans mount. Homemade or oem.

You missed the subject of the latter discussion which was very the use by of a solid tranny mount with rubber engine mounts 🙂

As a matter of fact, I did.

And back to my original point, these cars are a small market so many of the parts are expensive.
However I don't see why even a properly engineered and built mount should sell for over $100

OK, I gotcha now, And especially when they sell copied parts

I once bought a double roller timing chain from LC and paid $139.99 US. I found the same chain in CAN for $69.95 CAN.
Live and learn I guess.

Steve, I'll never argue physics with you. Jason sells two versions. A heavy duty...and a light duty version...whic h is the one I have. It's pretty flexible. You actually have to bend/contour it to get the correct angle to mate it to the frame. It's also adjustable...a nd I've got it set pretty soft.

I've done all the hard work for these guys. Complete stock junk build is on my vids. A couple years back I posted the complete tune up on the car for a run for the car from each outing for the year. I included, ET, MPH, 60 foot, launch RPM, shift points, humidity, temperature, low/high gear fueling and low/high gear timing. Did anyone listen...no. They went out and bought cool guy parts and struggled. Like Grumpy says. You can lead a horse to water...but you can't make him drink.
