So it seems that my brother and I have decided to attempt Drag Week in 2016. It is located favourably between MI, OH, and IN as we have lots of friends in the area; granted I will drive further to get to Drag Week than Drag Week itself. We are still at the early stages of planning - like what car to take; but, the class will most likely be Street Machine Eliminator.
Rules: https://image.adam.automotive.com/f/89338690/2015-2017-hot-rod-drag-week-rules-final.pdf (https://image.adam.automotive.com/f/89338690/2015-2017-hot-rod-drag-week-rules-final.pdf)
Dates and Locations: http://www.hotrod.com/events/drag-week-2016-track-locations-and-dates-announced/ (http://www.hotrod.com/events/drag-week-2016-track-locations-and-dates-announced/)
So assuming we can get in on registration day (likely early May 2016) and have a car (or two) ready we should be okay. I've already submitted my leave pass for Sep, and socialized the event to my CoC. Now I have to see if I can retain a few sponsors for help if the budget is going to be tight.
Game on!
-
That sounds like some good times. Good luck and let me know how I can help!
-
Damn expensive with our dollar at 70 cents. Dragweek is on my bucket list. Have fun!!!
-
Mike - what is the best way to get registered? I'd love to do this as well.
Chicken just needs a couple things and it'd be good.

Here's what I know based on last year: http://www.hotrod.com/news/hot-rod-drag-week-online-registration-goes-live-at-9-a-m-pdt-on-saturday-may-2-2015/ (http://www.hotrod.com/news/hot-rod-drag-week-online-registration-goes-live-at-9-a-m-pdt-on-saturday-may-2-2015/)

The more the merrier.

Meh. I can't take the money with me...
-
Yeah everything I've seen it's whoever can wait at their computer(s) and hit refresh until the registration opens. Bangshift.com is usually a good resource for drag week as well.
Street Race smallblock NA or PA is where I'd want to be. I doubt I'd be competitive but it'd be fun!

I will probably take the day off work in advance. I am also working on a plan that might help me jump the registration line...
My best guess is we will end up in the small block power adder class if we don't land in what was once known as "daily driver".
-
I definitely want to do it one of these days. I went and watched the time it came to Ennis. It was pretty cool and I got a t shirt. Also went to see the power tour thing when it came through town. Lots of hoopla. I'd like to do that too.
Good luck on the getting registered. I've read it happens pretty fast.

Ooops! Missed this...
Thanks, I will.

We did Power Tour back in 2012, so this is the natural progression. I plan on taking the family on the Power Tour when the girls get a bit older. I will pull out my ol' eBay sniping skills come registration day.

Registration is a few days away:

I'd love to do this - but it's not happening this year.
-
Yup, were tracking that. Thanks for thinking of me... I just ordered some E85 conversion parts for the TBSS in the event it draws the short straw. But, there are also some more wagon parts on the way. ;)

Way to go mike 😎

Congrats Mike

Thanks!
It looks like I will be driving about 4000kms from start to finish... because I live in the middle of nowhere. My brother is definitely getting some wheel time on the US route.

Take some farewell pics of National Trail for us.

-
self vulcanizing tape, duct n' electrical. voltmeter
needlenose pliers, vicegrips, aviation snips, long forceps, fuses, tire plugs, tie wraps
-
Big Azz pliers, needle nose and regular pliers, a file, socket set, 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive. Assortment of sockets and wrenches. A few screw drivers, and a couple hammers, I also think duct and electrical tape are a good idea and an assortment of zip ties and hose clamps. Wire coat hangers , radiator hoses(top n bottom, these would be the ones I took off when I put the new ones on for the trip)., cool new aluminum harbor freight jack, and four way lug wrench. I would probably sport two spare tires if I had the room or just use the drag radials as the spares if you were swapping tires for the track runs. Spare fuses, multimeter, and maybe some wire but a lot of stuff can be picked up along the way If needed, so cash and a credit card. Maybe some sensors If you have spares .
Fresh oil/filter change and clean air filter before embarking. A couple quarts of oil, and trans fluid and a gallon of water.
-
Mike...bring everything. You should see me set up at the track. Upright air compressor...g enerator...ful ly stocked roll around tool box...Nascar jack...coil packs...igniti on modules...02 sensors...ECM's...roll around tool tray...the list goes on. Bring everything you can.

No wonder you got targeted. They saw what you had and probably followed you home.

That's what we thot at first. Had nothing to do with that. What happened to me was a fluke. I could honestly write a book about it. I just pried my truck...unfini shed from the bodyshop where it was sitting for the past 4 months. I'm finishing the repairs myself. That's a story in itself.

Glad you got in Mike! I hope you have a Great Week with lot's of Good Stories & Memories!!

Keep the ideas flowing!
I was doing a lot of research on hotels before I started booking yesterday and I avoided the super-cheap motels that most use; and opted into the pricier hotels with my military discount. Hope to avoid the riff-raff and theft this way; and get better rest.

Every good soldier carries some toilet paper, 550 cord, 100 mph tape, waterproof matches and a good knife on a field problem.
-
Field problem? 😝
-
Field problem = training exercise
Training exercise = taking the young'ns out in the woods see what they don't know or forgot to plan for.
-
I take my hobo stove everywhere I go. Because you don't want me in command low on coffee. Total. Asshole. Mode.

.... Total. Asshole. Mode.
How is that different from....
OH nevermind
So all that time ALL you need was coffee? Wow

Sounds like someone needs to get a job at Starbucks. Prolly be the coolest guy evah!

No better learning experience than to need and not have.
-
Well I just got a quote for $1800 for a set of 17x9.5 Race Stars and a pair of 275/50R17 M&H RaceMasters (to match up with the 325/45R17s I already have) in case the TBSS is the one that goes. Ouch.
I was telling Natasha about this and she said "that is a lot of money to spend for something you are only going to use once... are you sure you are never going to race it (again)?" I think she is enabling my bad habit.
-
Hammer, maglite, swiss army knife and a can of beans.
-
I would like an enabler like that. My wife is more like, " do you want to eat and have electricity, or race the car?" We all know I want to race the car, but I know my responsibiliti es, and can live vicariously through all y'all.
-
The lean years were so lean that selling the Buick for the pittance it would have raised would not have made a dent in the owed - so it stayed :)
-
No better learning experience than to need and not have.
The new Quote of the Day!
-
So I ordered up, and have on hand, the parts to do a FlexFuel sensor conversion on the TBSS - looking to run a 20-30% ethanol blend. The 60lb/hr injectors should be able to handle it, given they are at around 80% DC right now on straight gas (no propane) and 7ish psi of boost.
In other news the TBSS is at the body shop getting a massive amount of rust repair work done (it is the sleeping death), including a new door and fender. FML this is going to impact my available financial resources for DW unless I can sell some more stuff soon.
-
The wagon is out. After a hard bit of soul searching I had to accept that unless I cut a lot of corners there was no way to get the car there. I'd like to blame work for taking me away for a month and a half, but that would be a BS excuse. Maybe next year - because I will not cut corners building the wagon. Period.
Moving on.
Readying the TBSS over the next two months should be easier, or at least manageable. Away we go.
-
Hey, don't worry 'bout that. Doing it RIGHT takes time and having it done right is way more important than sitting on the side of the road thinking, "If only". Probably why my car looks like it does. But it does run and drive and hopefully will have working ac one of these days.
You made the right choice.
-
I will not cut corners building the wagon. Period.
I like that attitude!
-
Man I feel your pain except I just had to scratch the itch last night
-
Do it the way you really want it or deep down you will always be a little pissed you didn't!
-
Take your time...and do it right. You have another car on standby.
-
Gents, thanks for reassuring me that I am not insane for not being insane.
---
I will update this list as a go. Feel free to make suggestions; if this all gets out of hand (ie. looks to be a pain to load/unload daily) will start dropping things off the list.

Mike...a question pertaining to Dragweek...as it's on my bucket list. If my car breaks...then I gotta get it home. So the question is this. Can Dan go from track to track with my truck/trailer...in case I break. I know I have to drive the car from track to track...not trailer it.

As I understand it, yes. Can he support you in any way shape or form from that rig? No. It is only what you can pack and carry (there is a limited volume), and what you and your navigator can fix. Impromptu/random support is acceptable (ie. other racers and folks in the pits); but, if it is determined that you have help following you around (or another team was entered just to have additional tools/parts on hand) that will result in a DQ.
That being said, before we leave we are going to make sure our buddy in Michigan is on standby with his tow rig in case we need serious recovery.
-
Got 93 Truck Stars (http://www.racestarindustries.com/gallery-gm.html (http://www.racestarindustries.com/gallery-gm.html)) coming in chrome/polished 17x9.5s and 325/45R17 M&H Racemasters on ALL. FOUR. CORNERS.
No, no more murdered out cars. We bling.
Besides if I want them black (or some other colour) I can paint or plastidip them.
-
I like the 5 spoke better than the 6 spoke. Which ones did you get?
-

The 6-spokes are the only option for the TBSS, as it has six lugs. If I wanted to invest twice the money I would get these: http://weldwheels.com/shop/street-strip/rt-s-2014/s77b-hd-drag-truck-wheels.html (http://weldwheels.com/shop/street-strip/rt-s-2014/s77b-hd-drag-truck-wheels.html)
Or four times the money, some custom made CCWs: http://www.tbssowners.com/forums/2825585-post43.html (http://www.tbssowners.com/forums/2825585-post43.html)

I like the welds better than the ccw's
-
Bunch of maintenance parts got ordered for the TBSS today. Including two new front CV axles because it would seem both decided to start leaking since being reinstalled in January. Awesome!
-
I like to carry self-vulcanizing tape (scotch 23/70), long hemostats
-
Duct tape?
A gallon or two of water or antifreeze?
Four way lug wrench?
-
scotch locks, 12/14/18/22g wire, toilet paper, 5 gallon bucket, and a toilet seat to fit a five gallon bucket.
-

Mike's a soldier. I'm sure he has an e-tool as part of his tool box for those special moments when you just have to go! Lol!
-
If this was the wagon I would just hang the seat off the tailgate and crap into a grocery bag; but, it isn't so I won't. The number of poop-related stories in one's military career is amazing. A lot of go, no-go, and oh no moments.
It is the one constant. Everybody poops. Even girls.
-
The driveshaft loop is built... just need to paint it.
-
Nice work Mike
-
That angle makes it look huge.
-
Thanks! It is about 40" centre to centre as it bolts to the underside of the frame rails. It isn't crazy heavy, even though it is built out of 1/4" plate/pipe, and all the tubing is seamless.
-
Right. Driveshaft loop is painted and in, seems to be fine.
Made it down to the States today and picked up some goodies. Shiny and sticky.
Got home and started tearing into her, first order of business was getting the (fucking PITA) axles out and the ARP studs in. A bit of a chore to say the least. Came to learn that the factory axles are machined out of wood (what junk), and one of mine is wearing out (the bearing and/or seal is crapping out). Looks like a partial rebuild will be in order this Winter, and a set of stock replacement axles.
Just waiting for the RTV to cure and we'll fill it up, and slap it back together and get on with the front.
-
Busy weekend overall, but the vast majority of the work is done.
All the wheel studs are in, CV shafts replaced, mini-mudflaps installed, wheel adapters turned into spacers, and changed out the hatch latch and lock mechanism.
About that last one... seems the unit I was sent is different than the one that came out; it ships with a bunch of extra parts which are not used and do not fit inside the hatch. In the end, to get the handle to open properly, I had to secure the scissoring parts with a nut and bolt to operate the latch. The little white "T" served this same function when it came out of the box. I have to confirm that this is the correct part, or the correct superseded part.
-
Like those race stars!
-
Like those race stars!
Me too. I hope to have the tires mounted on them this weekend, and then I can test fit them to ensure I don't have any rubbing issues.
-
Curious who is going to be there? Check it out:
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/2016-hot-rod-drag-week-official-entry-list/ (http://www.hotrod.com/articles/2016-hot-rod-drag-week-official-entry-list/)
Looks like a pretty incredible field.
-
I'll be cheering on the two TR's.
-
I counted 9 Buicks total. Not too bad of a showing for the gentleman's class. Definately going to make some memories on that trip.
-
I believe I will be driving one of two TBSSes. The other one runs 8s or 9s with a turbo.
-
Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 M&H 325/45R17s.
-
Tires and wheels were dropped off this afternoon, I should have them back on Monday.
-
Managed to scrape together a few hours to install the QTP cutout; took the power and ground from one of the accessory ports below the radio. Also managed to make the huge switch assembly fit in the centre console... what a PITA. Regardless there is now one less reason to crawl under the truck while on Drag Week (I hope).
I also had to readjust the y-pipe off the headers because the exhaust was sagging (and resting on the trans crossmember), which pulled the ball flanges out of alignment. While I was in there I quickly fabbed up little pedestal with an rubber isolater to help keep the merge from sitting on the trans crossmember.
-
I'd like to see that dump in action. Going to be fun!
-
I will put a vid up shortly (later today?), I'd like to do it outside because inside the garage it is just offensively noisy (but, isn't that the point?).
Since we are on the subject of multimedia - I created an Instagram account to use during the trip for quick updates, since posting pics on multiple forums will kill my data plan (time permitting I will make updates at the hotel using WiFi).
Once things get rolling around 9 Sep you'll see more updates here:
https://www.instagram.com/23adeathtech/ (https://www.instagram.com/23adeathtech/)
-
Nice!
-
Added a video, I have no clue how bad the sound is. Also the drag radials are back...
-
And now they are mounted on the truck. I added the Instagram account link to my sig.
-
Picked up wheels, mounted wheels. Realized that we are going to need a trailer to carry the wheels... FML.
It is going to be interesting to see how much quicker this thing accelerates with tires that are 4" shorter.
-
Why is it every time I shoot a video for this truck I have a head cold?

Looks great Mike
-
Looks great Mike
Thanks; but, I want to lower it 2" with the new tires/wheels being so short.
-
That will look great help fill the wheel well up Might even help it handle.
-
I have been considering slamming the truck and autocrossing it. I will likely be building a LSD front diff for it this Winter, after that it just needs coilovers and shortened front CV joints. It is just money, right?
-
Hmmm... so that happened; and it didn't blow up.
-

True. But, I wasn't aiming for 11psi and nearly 100% duty cycle. This is a bit on the ragged edge for a 10.9:1 engine; 40% ethanol or not.
I rescaled the MAF last night and richened up the Power Enrichment table in the higher RPMs; I will re-jet the propane to get more fuel flow (pretty sure it has a small jet in it right now?).
-
I should add (because it increases the relative size of e-Penis (at least in my own mind)) that the rough horsepower calculation based on airflow is in the 610-650 bhp (crank) range. It sure felt strong - talk about a pucker factor of 10.
-
pucker factor lol
-
The propane was only running a #29 jet, it now has a #52 jet.

Goes to show my ignorance. I looked at your log and only saw the KR. It's going to be a really steep learning curve when I finally go to an SD chip

I rescaled the MAF last night and richened up the Power Enrichment table in the higher RPMs; I will re-jet the propane to get more fuel flow (pretty sure it has a small jet in it right now?).
Goes to show my ignorance. I looked at your log and only saw the KR. It's going to be a really steep learning curve when I finally go to an SD chip
Meh, don't over think it when the time comes.
-
Why not go 2 bar SD Mike?
Looks fun.

Technically I have. My current OS has done away with the Virtual Volumetric Efficiency algorithm, and now runs a standard 2 bar VE table. I have, for no real good reason other than previously invested effort in educating myself on tuning a MAF, chosen to continue to play with a blended system. I am a self-hating masochist.

Picked up some truck bed coating (thank goodness for non-waterbased paint) and LED lights. So damn wet - it wouldn't stop raining today so I couldn't paint and rewire the trailer. I will be placing and order for materials to build a cap for it this week.
Since I was stuck inside all day I started building an intercooler scoop to keep the IATs in check... used 1/8" aluminum stock. There will still be ~6" of ground clearance, which drops to 4" with the drag radials mounted.

expected a different finger to be used to cover license place- out of character?

There is always a good chance one of my kids is standing at the backdoor wondering what I am up to in the garage... not a good idea to expose them to those types of hand gestures.
-
Almost done. I just need to get a pair of 1" thick, 1" diameter slugs/spacers cut to replace the dinky things currently holding it together. Chopped up an old trunk seal (I think that is what it was) to seal the scoop to the intercooler; I really enjoy being resourceful versus throwing money at parts.
Final ground clearance is 5".
-
Looks as good as my Precision bug scooper!
-
I am going to put in a pair of air distribution vanes to get better coverage over the surface area of the intercooler (dividing it into thirds) Will be able to get by with 1/16" sheet.
-
Mike I was going to do something like that but more for strength with some bolts, shims etc. Over the years with bumps & scratches I find when I put on the AC maybe 1-10 times it will vibrate making a noise that doesn't sound very nice. Sorta like a tin can full of nuts & bolts shaking around down there,
I think the aluminum just isn't as strong as it used to be on the bottom side. Had it 10+ years.
-
Been pretty busy lately fixing the trailer (not going smoothly BTW). Pictures pretty much speak for themselves. The frame was fooked, it is less fooked now (used 3/16" angle iron to reinforce the rotted section). Painted the wheels (POR-15 and some semi-gloss wheel paint). The tonneau cover (I guess you can call it that, maybe privacy cover is better?) is all 20ga and 1/8" plate/angle iron. I still have to make a prop rod system (was thinking about gas struts) to hold its heavy bitch ass up (sure am glad I can shoulder press my body weight). It has double locks and the lid (?) retains the tailgate pins. I hope to have it painted in the next few days; then I can address the lighting - and start packing...
-
More.
-
Hinges might be a pain on the end vs a side. Safer driving I guess.
-
God Dang your a busy little Beaver! Good Job!
-
I thought about side hinging it, but that would have potentially impacted the use of the tie-down rails. I also thought about making a center split lid hinged off the sides; again didn't like how it limited the use of the rails.
At this stage I just want to go racing... kicking off in 13 days. Eek!
-
Next up - paint.
-
Looks swell! How much is that thing gonna weigh?

I flat bench 225lbs pretty regularly; I think is a little less than that. LOL!
Not light, and very awkward. But, it will do the job.
-
After a 6 hour long thrash last night the trailer is painted. My shoulders are burning and my neck is very stiff this morning. Overall it got really good coverage considering how much surface area I had to deal with. Dealing with a 3-4 hour pot time was a bit stressful. I still have to undercoat a few spots and hook up the new lights but it is basically complete - and can GTFO of the garage tomorrow (needs to be shielded from rain for 24-48 hours).
I'll grab pics tonight once I stop hating myself.
-
Really looking good :)
-
That trailer is going to be tuff enough for a mad max movie
-
Jason I was thinking the same thing. Clear coat it with Mat or Satin & weld a few weird car parts on it!
-
Pardon the delay, things have been busy. Pretty much done now - LED lights are on. The wheels go back on in the morning and TBSS gets its parking space back. Just a few minor things left to do.
My vacation starts tomorrow, and finally get to spend some time quality with the family before I depart.
-
Got an email from HOTROD a couple of days ago which contained about 12 pages of paperwork (tech and spec sheets, and waivers) to fill out. Just when I thought my Drag Week thrash was complete... FML.
Oh well, it is done now - I doubt we'll be interesting enough of an entry to write a story on; but, they have the facts now.
In the paperwork it states that you can identify a second racer - so I put my brother down in case he wants to participate. He does. :) Also, you can have as many passengers as your car can carry - they all get free entry to the tracks/races.
-
I finished packing for Drag Week today... #TBSSproblems LOL. And I hand waxed the truck.
-
Gawd, your gunna burn yourself out before you get there.
-

Ha! I will collapse when I get home.
-
I forgot. I don't get to rest when I get home... rather I get to push a double-wide running stroller in the Army Run 5K on 18 Sep.

I cannot wait until the kids can use their own legs to propel themselves rapidly over distance.

Yep, one of the greatest days of my life was the day we got to stop carrying a diaper bag. Back then it seemed I spent half of my time in a bathroom some where. Now I just worry about what wacko thinks they have the right to enter a women's restroom. Better not be in there while my daughter is.
I'm sure your trailblazer will scream after you drop that trailer in the pits. It'll feel like a different truck. Haha

Funny, when I have my girls I will walk right into the women's restroom to change their diapers if there isn't a change table in the men's. Times are a changin'...
I think my trailer weighs more than some of the cars that will be running next week - so yeah, it'll pick up some.
-
Nice to look good while your having fun at the track!

Thanks! I am a shameless attention whore. But, it was mostly to make cleaning off the bugs and road grime easier.
-
Dude this will be an experience of a lifetime, even if you are driving a soccer mom suv :O
-
Haha! Dick. ;)
Made it to Windsor yesterday, currently in Michigan visiting friends. 3.5hrs to Hebron, OH later. Keep an eye on the feed.
-
Hebron is where everyone stayed for the BPG events before the changes. Good Luck & have a Blast!!
-
Picked up the Torco octane booster from our friends in MI and had a perfect drive down to Ohio. And now it is raining... LOL.
-
I think I heard when the storms went through the temps dropped 15*. Lucky.
-
Forecast is for cooler weather all week. Here is to hoping.
-
Not as quick out the gate as I had hoped, but we are tuning it in. 12hrs at the track was too much. Tomorrow should be half as long.
-
It's a marathon...jus t surviving the week is a huge accomplishment .
-
We made it to Norwalk... only lost one part off the truck so far. The filter for the Procharger bypass - the truck is a lot louder now. LOL.
-
I've been perusing the hot rod feed on you tube looking for a shot of your tbss. It's almost 8 hours long
-
You want to watch around the middle of that for my class. We only get an hour to run... before the open session.
-
Oh and Hotrod.com has lots of great pics.
-
12.881 @ 107.64mph w/1.93 60' in a 5085lb truck. Yup.
Then we blew the alternator up. Because Drag Week.
-
Hey, you are able to get the "full" experience. How could you say you experienced it all without some kind of malfunction and repair?
-
Mike I saw both your day 1 passes. 13.3 and 13.2. Two nasty crashes...both drivers walked away.
-
Doing the Drag Week walk of shame was kinda fun. LOL.
I am going to spend a week trying to find our passes.
-
12.6 @ 106mph w/1.8 60'... scaled over 5000lbs. DA is 1300 today at US131. Dialing it in...
-
Your getting better results each day so keep doing what your doing! I'm sure your having a Great Time!
-
I'm pretty Jealous Mike have a blast!

Excellent time! Sounds like you're having a blast!
-
Thanks guys! Things went really smooth today. Might actually get a full night's rest - heh.
-
Dude.. Someday I would like to do this. Maybe bring you along Mike to show me the ropes
-
Sure thing, you just need my wife's permission. LOL. Gorgeous day in Indy.

We are averaging 12.8@106mph going into Day 5. We have 8 miles left to drive and a quarter mile left to race to complete this challenge.
Yesterday we helped with some roadside repairs so we are definitely getting the full(er) experience. I highly recommend this trip.

That's the best part watching competitors come together and help each other !

12.6@108mph w/1.8 60'. DA is 3000' today. That concludes our Drag Week - now to drive this beast 750 miles home.
-
Back in Windsor for the night.
-
That's a long day but it's all good when it's to-from the track!
-
Glad you had a good time!
-
Home sweet home; had a shower and now I am back in my slippers sipping on a pop. Left Windsor at 0600hrs.
Thanks to everyone for all the well wishing and support through the week. It really meant a lot!

Nice little drive by as David was filming! Do you call that a video bomb?
-
That was completely unintentional, and I don't even remember seeing him there at the time. Our alternator would shit the bed about an hour later leaving that track - LMFAO!
PS. There is clearly no love for supercharged LS motors from that guy. ;)
-
Just when you think this thread should die and go away... I got some print in the Feb 2017 issue of HOTROD. Unfortunately, the TBSS didn't make the photo/feature cut - however, taking some time to write a detailed response to the survey from the staff got my name and thoughts in black and white.
Natasha and my brother both thought I would be disappointed by not seeing the truck in the magazine, but with all of the video and pics shown on the web this was even cooler for me to be quoted (and we all know how much I love the sight of my own words). Also, my brother was busting my chops because he had his picture in the magazine a few years back.
Got to run out and get a few more copies tomorrow.

I am such a dork.
